“I didn’t expect you to move on so quickly.” Her voice was smooth—but sharp underneath. I glanced between her and him. “Who is she?” I asked quietly. “She doesn’t concern you,” he replied. That told me everything. The woman smiled slightly. “That’s not very polite.” Her eyes swept over me—judging, measuring. “She deserves to know,” she added. My chest tightened. “Know what?” “What do I deserve to know’ I asked again Silence. Then she stepped closer. “I was the one he was supposed to marry.” The words hit like a slap. I looked at him. He didn’t deny it. “Is that true?” I asked. His jaw tightened. “It’s irrelevant.” Irrelevant? My stomach twisted painfully. “Everything about this is relevant!” I snapped. The woman laughed softly. “Oh, this is going to be interesting,” she said. Her gaze returned to me. “Be careful,” she whispered. “You’re standing in a place that was never meant for you.” Something inside me burned. “I’m his wife,” I said firmly. Her smile didn’t fade. “For now.”
