I refused to cry.
Not in front of him.
Not after what he said.
“You’re using me,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm inside me.
He didn’t even flinch.
“I told you this marriage was a transaction.”
“That doesn’t make it right.”
His lips curved slightly. “Right and wrong stopped mattering a long time ago.”
Something inside me snapped.
“I’m not your weapon,” I shot back. “And I’m not your revenge plan.”
For the first time—he paused.
Really paused.
His eyes studied me like I had just become something new.
Interesting.
“You’re stronger than I expected,” he said quietly.
I lifted my chin. “And you’re worse than I imagined.”
A flicker of something—almost amusement—crossed his face.
“Good,” he said. “I prefer honesty.”
I stepped closer, refusing to back down.
“Then let me be honest,” I said. “I won’t make this easy for you.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Then—
“I don’t want easy,” he replied.
And the way he said it…
Made my heart race for all the wrong reasons.
