CHAPTER FIVE

1003 Words
Trust Fractures Emma’s day started like any other, filled with uneasy silences and the weight of expectations in Alexander Steele’s world. But by afternoon, everything she thought she was holding together began to unravel. It started with the reporters. She had stepped out to grab some air from the suffocating confines of the penthouse, intending to take a walk around the private garden maintained exclusively for residents. She had barely made it past the gates when the first camera flashes hit her. “Emma Carter! Care to comment on the rumors?” Is it true you’re only in this for the money? ” How long before Alexander Steele throws you out? ” Their words came fast and harsh, each accusation slicing through her composure. She froze, panic constricting her chest as microphones and phones were shoved in her face. They weren’t just random assumptions. These were precise, personal attacks, clearly crafted by someone who knew her past and her vulnerabilities. The words gold-digger and scandal rang loudest. Emma turned and bolted, retreating to the safety of the penthouse. But even there, the fallout awaited her. The story had spread like wildfire online—clickbait headlines pairing her face with phrases like “desperate social climber” and “debt-ridden mistress.” When Alexander returned home later that evening, his expression was cold, unreadable. Emma’s stomach churned as he strode into the living room, tossing his jacket onto a chair. He held up his phone, the screen displaying one of the viral articles. “Care to explain this?” His voice was calm, but the edge beneath it was unmistakable. Emma flinched at the sharpness in his tone. “I didn’t do anything. You know I wouldn’t—” “What I know is that this is a problem,” he interrupted, pacing the room. “I have shareholders calling me, my PR team is in a frenzy, and Sofia, of all people, seems to have ‘helpfully’ sent me links to these stories.” “Sofia?” Emma’s voice wavered as anger flickered in her chest. She shouldn’t have been surprised that Sofia would use this opportunity to undermine her further. Alexander’s jaw tightened. “She claims to have nothing to do with it.” “Of course she’d say that!” Emma’s voice rose, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “Do you seriously believe her over me?” Alexander stopped pacing, his sharp gaze locking onto her. “I didn’t say I believed her. But I also can’t ignore the fact that these stories didn’t just appear out of nowhere.” The accusation in his tone stung more than Emma expected. “You think I leaked this? That I’d ruin my own life just for… what? Get attention? Alexander, this is insane.” The argument escalated quickly. Emma’s desperation collided with Alexander’s frustration, creating a storm of words neither could take back. “You don’t know what it’s like to live under a microscope like this,” Alexander snapped, his voice dripping with irritation. “Every move I make is scrutinized. I can’t afford scandals like this!” “And you think I asked for this?” Emma shot back, her voice trembling. “I didn’t choose to be here, remember? You’re the one who brought me into this mess!” Her words hung in the air, heavy and raw. For a moment, silence settled between them, the tension palpable. Alexander sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Then tell me, Emma. If you didn’t do that, who did?” Emma’s lips tightened into a thin line. She didn’t have proof, but she could feel the weight of Ryan’s threats and Sofia’s schemes pressing down on her. “I don’t know who,” she said finally, her voice quieter but no less firm. “But it wasn’t me. And if you can’t believe that, maybe this arrangement was a mistake.” Emma’s words hit Alexander harder than he expected. He had always admired her resilience, even when she was at her lowest. And now, hearing her defend herself with such conviction, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he might have misjudged her. “I never said I don’t believe you,” he said, his tone softening slightly. “You didn’t have to,” she replied, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Your doubt says it all.” For the first time, Alexander saw the cracks in Emma’s armor—the vulnerability she worked so hard to hide. He had thought of her as someone fragile, someone he needed to protect. But now, he realized there was a strength in her that he hadn’t fully understood. “I’ll handle the media,” he said after a long pause. “But we need to figure out how to stop this from happening again.” Emma nodded, though her heart was heavy. The damage had already been done, and she wasn’t sure if their fragile trust could survive it. That night, Alexander released a carefully crafted statement to the press, publicly defending Emma and denouncing the rumors as baseless and malicious. The move was calculated, designed to protect his reputation as much as hers. But privately, things were far from resolved. Emma retreated to her room, feeling the weight of the day crush her. She didn’t trust Alexander’s sudden shift in tone. He had defended her, yes, but she couldn’t shake the memory of his earlier doubts. And as much as she wanted to focus on taking control of her life, the constant attacks from Sofia and Ryan made her feel like she was drowning. Meanwhile, in his study, Alexander stared out at the city skyline, a glass of scotch in hand. He couldn’t shake the image of Emma standing on her ground, her voice trembling but strong. She had surprised him, and that wasn’t something people do often. For the first time in a long time, Alexander Steele found himself questioning his instincts. And that unsettled him more than anything else.
