Chapter 6 - My Little Sister, Who Won’t Endure Injustice

1063 Words
Helen Holton never imagined that, less than an hour after being kicked out of her own home, she would run into Eleanor Holton again, this time in the garden of the Fairmont family estate. Helen was visibly shocked, but only for a second. Her gaze then quickly shifted to the middle-aged woman dressed as a servant standing beside her. She immediately understood. This woman must be Eleanor's biological mother, a maid. It made sense. Coming from a rural background, it was no surprise that she had to settle for a job like this. Being a maid in such an esteemed family was, after all, a relatively decent position. Catherine Holton seemed to have come to the same conclusion. Disdain mixed with a hint of amusement flickered in her heart. But on the surface, she wore a face of sympathy and concern. "Sis, I didn’t know your family worked here. But this is the Fairmont family estate. Please, don't touch anything or make any trouble. We wouldn’t want to cause any issues," Catherine said, her tone laced with subtle mockery. The butler, who had been guiding them, flinched slightly at Catherine’s words. Just as he was about to correct her, Eleanor's indifferent voice cut in, “No need to worry.” She paused for a moment, her bright eyes shifting past Catherine to the faint grayish mist lingering behind her, and then raised a brow slightly. "If I were you," she continued coolly, "I’d stay at home and not wander around. After all, there are protections at home that keep dark forces at bay. But once you leave, who knows what might happen." Helen, who had not yet realized the full extent of Eleanor's power, was infuriated by her defiance. Her face contorted with anger, but she reined herself in, considering the presence of the Fairmont family’s butler. Instead, she turned to Catherine and advised her with a tone of superiority. “Catherine, you’re too kind. But some people just don’t know what’s good for them. They’re ungrateful, acting as if they’re someone special after finding their real parents. Hmph.” She continued, her voice dripping with contempt, “This child was never good enough. She was always careless, and we tolerated her. But who knows what trouble she’ll cause now that she’s with the Fairmonts?” The butler, overhearing this, was taken aback. Didn’t this woman know that the person she was speaking about was the rightful heir to the Fairmont family? He couldn’t believe the audacity she had to speak this way about Eleanor, especially in front of him. The butler’s expression cooled as he processed this. Meanwhile, Helen mistook his reaction for disapproval of Eleanor, and she sneered inwardly. She was eager to see this "ungrateful child" thrown out. As for the family representative position, Helen believed that with her relationship to the Fairmont family, she had every right to claim it, and Catherine could simply take it without any more discussion. The maid, who had been silent since Helen and Catherine arrived, couldn’t help but feel uneasy. From what she overheard, it sounded like these people were speaking ill of the Fairmont family's recently discovered eldest daughter. She couldn’t help but worry. Just as the butler was about to speak up, another voice interrupted. “What’s going on here?” It was Alexander Fairmont, who had just finished his phone call. Upon seeing the group standing by Eleanor, his steps quickened, and he made his way over to them. The moment Catherine saw Alexander, her eyes brightened, and Helen sized him up as well. She noted his diamond cufflinks and an expensive watch, guessing that this must be one of the Fairmont family’s young masters. The butler, seeing Alexander approaching, quickly grew serious, but was about to respond when he realized that Alexander was looking directly at Eleanor, not at them. Eleanor, who had been silently observing the exchange, suddenly spoke up, her voice cool and clear. “They were just talking behind my back.” The simple, direct words hung in the air, creating an awkward silence. Helen’s expression shifted immediately, and she shrieked, “You little brat, what nonsense are you spouting?!” She raised her hand to strike Eleanor, but before she could, Alexander’s smile vanished. His face turned cold. In an instant, Eleanor, instead of cowering, swiftly grabbed Helen’s wrist with firm, unyielding force. Helen was momentarily stunned, unable to pull away. She had not expected her adopted daughter to resist, let alone take control. With a piercing gaze, Eleanor coldly regarded Helen, her voice steady. “Don’t forget, I’m no longer a part of the Holton family, and I won’t allow you to hit or scold me anymore.” She released Helen’s wrist, causing her to stumble backward. “Mom!” Catherine cried out, rushing forward to support her mother, shock written across her face. “Eleanor, how could you? How could you raise your hand against Mom? She’s the one who raised you, how could you do this?! You’re going too far!” Even now, Catherine continued to defend Helen, playing up her role as the concerned daughter. Eleanor was no longer in the mood for Catherine’s fake sympathy. Her sharp eyes met Catherine’s as she retorted without hesitation. “Which of your eyes saw me strike her? You must be blind, just like everyone else in your family.” Alexander, standing to the side, couldn’t help but smile in amusement. He had always seen his sister as soft and obedient, easy to bully. But now, she was anything but. He was impressed. She was truly a Fairmont. Helen, red with rage from the refusal to back down, couldn’t tolerate the defiance. Ignoring the fact that they were on Fairmont grounds, she pushed Catherine aside and charged at Eleanor, shouting, “You little b*tch—!” But before she could lay a hand on her, a broad, imposing figure stepped in front of Eleanor. It was Alexander, blocking her with ease. His posture radiated a sense of security, but his face was colder than ever. “This is the Fairmont estate,” he said, his voice freezing. “It’s not a place where anyone can run wild.” The air thickened with tension, and the message was clear: no one was allowed to disrespect the Fairmont family, especially not under their own roof.
