Chapter 10 - Is Losing Millions Really Considered a Financial Loss?

1339 Words
As the eldest among the younger generation of the Fairmont family, Alexander Fairmont always carried a smile, yet his words were not to be taken lightly. In fact, sometimes his influence was even more potent than that of the family patriarchs. Take Oliver Fairmont, for example. After receiving the unspoken warning in Alexander's gaze, he quickly shut his mouth and refrained from speaking further. Lily Sanders glanced at Alexander Fairmont, lowering her eyes in silence, her expression unreadable. Lady Walsh was swiftly escorted by the villa security to be held under supervision, but the situation was not easy to resolve. On the surface, Lady Walsh had not stolen any property from the Fairmont family, making it impossible to call the police. In the end, it could only be deemed as an act of superstition. After all, the concept of stealing "fortune" had no basis in reality. However, given the circumstances, Lady Walsh could no longer remain in the Fairmont family. "Miss, how should we handle these items?" the butler inquired, turning to Eleanor Holton. Regardless of how she had learned about the items buried on the estate, it was clear that the young lady had something up her sleeve. "Just burn them," Eleanor Holton replied. After giving the order, she took out her phone and began tapping away at it. Alexander Fairmont, catching sight of her screen, noticed she was transferring money. She had just received a transfer of one hundred thousand from him, and now she was sending fifty thousand to another account. Alexander raised an eyebrow but didn't ask further questions. After all, it was her money; she could spend it however she liked. Meanwhile, in the villa's large study, the butler reported the situation in the garden to the family patriarch. "…We've uncovered something in the flowerbed, which appears to be the object the young lady referred to as the one that could steal the Fairmont family's fortune." The patriarch, an elderly man with a calm demeanor, was slightly surprised. "That child knows about this?" he asked. The butler thought for a moment before responding, "It could also have been a coincidence." He continued, "The surveillance footage shows that the items were buried about a month ago. According to the young lady's statement, the Fairmont family should have already lost some of its fortune. However, I spoke to Charles, and neither the company nor the family has suffered any financial loss in recent days." In other words, Lady Walsh’s burial of the object had not had the intended effect, and Eleanor's words were now in question. The patriarch gave a thoughtful smile. "Seems like it's just a child's little hobby. As long as it doesn't cause harm, let it be." As for Lady Walsh, even if her actions had failed, her malicious intent meant she could no longer stay within the family. On the other hand, upon hearing that the Fairmont family had not suffered any losses, Eleanor Holton was immediately skeptical. "Impossible." Though it was only a slight loss, Lady Walsh had indeed managed to siphon away part of the Fairmont family's fortune. Just that little bit of fortune would have been enough to make Lady Walsh's family rich. Eleanor was confident in this. Oliver Fairmont, who had been contemplating whether his earlier dismissal of Eleanor's words had been too hasty, snorted in disbelief. "I told you, someone's just bluffing. What kind of nonsense is this about stealing fortune? I've never heard of it!" Eleanor gave him a side glance, her expression clearly saying, "Don’t provoke me." She then turned back to Alexander Fairmont. "Have someone check Lady Walsh and her son's financial accounts from the past month." Curious about his sister's abilities, Alexander didn't hesitate. He made a quick phone call, and the results came back soon after. Upon reviewing the investigation results, Alexander's face betrayed a rare moment of surprise. Oliver and Lily, both intrigued, leaned in to see the outcome. Alexander put away his phone and looked at Eleanor. "Lady Walsh's family did indeed come into a windfall recently. They won five million on the lottery." Eleanor's face lit up with satisfaction. "See? I told you I wasn't wrong." "Fortune works in cycles. They got five million, so the Fairmont family must have lost something equivalent," she added with conviction. Alexander, however, was somewhat speechless. "A project at one of our subsidiaries lost a few million last week. But that’s not a big deal, and Charles Fairmont, our CEO, certainly doesn't care." Eleanor frowned. "You said it was a financial loss. I thought you meant we'd lost billions, but now you’re telling me it’s just a few million?" Alexander raised an eyebrow, as if to say, "Not my fault you misled me with your choice of words." Eleanor: "…" It wasn’t that the family hadn’t lost any fortune; it was just that the amount was so minuscule that they hadn’t even noticed. Ah, the woes of the super-rich. Even though she was now part of the Fairmont family, she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy. "Lady Walsh’s son gambled away all their family savings a few months ago. Last month, he also killed someone in a drunk driving accident and was arrested. The family of the victim demanded two million in compensation before agreeing to sign a letter of forgiveness. It’s likely this is why Lady Walsh resorted to attempting to steal the Fairmont family's fortune." The details of Lady Walsh's actions were quickly uncovered, and with her own confession, Alexander Fairmont had the full story within the hour. Upon hearing that it was a drunk driving incident, Eleanor’s mind automatically linked it to the negative energy surrounding Lady Walsh. For a brief moment, she hesitated. Something felt off. If Lady Walsh’s son had caused the accident, Lady Walsh might only be indirectly involved with the negative energy, but the dark aura seemed more directly attached to her… She asked Alexander, "Could you show me a photo of Lady Walsh's son?" Alexander was pleased with how quickly Eleanor had adjusted to her new role and had no issue helping her. He sent over the photo in no time. Eleanor studied the image carefully, furrowing her brow. "This man doesn’t have the right facial features," she muttered. She quickly asked for his birth date and, pulling out a few coins from her bag, proceeded to perform a quick divination. Oliver, who had been eyeing her with disdain, sneered quietly. "Tch! Still pretending to be some kind of mystic. When will this nonsense end?" Eleanor ignored him, focusing on the divination. After a few moments, her face became serious. Oliver, clearly wanting to draw attention to himself, couldn't help but mock her. "Well? Did you predict some kind of bloodshed?" He had seen street fortune tellers use such lines often, but he didn’t believe for a second that Eleanor had any real ability. Eleanor didn’t acknowledge him, instead speaking seriously to Alexander. "Based on his birth chart, he should have been born with a weak intellect. In Buddhism, there’s the concept of the Eight Wisdoms. If someone accumulates a great deal of bad karma in their past life, they may lose one of their faculties in this life, making them naturally foolish. But this person has regained full faculties—meaning Lady Walsh must have used some other method to make him normal." "But what she may not realize is that restoring someone’s intellect after they’ve been deprived of it by karma is equivalent to defying fate. It can not only shorten their lifespan but also lead them down a dark path." Lady Walsh’s son was a compulsive gambler, and now he had committed a fatal drunk driving accident—clear signs that restoring his intellect had unleashed the negative consequences of tampering with fate. Eleanor's tone grew somber as she shared her findings. Nearby, a maid, who had been quietly listening, seemed eager to say something but held back, unsure of whether it was appropriate to speak out given her position.
