Eight hours.
The surgery had already gone on for eight long hours, and still nothing.
I tried to focus on my work, but my mind wouldn’t let me rest. Every few minutes I kept glancing toward the operating theatre, heart tight with worry. Mr Vincent hadn’t come out. Mira hadn’t come out.
Then, finally, I heard my name.
“Juliet…”
I turned.
Mr Vincent stood there, still in his scrubs, looking exhausted. His face was unreadable.
“She’s okay now,” he said quietly, then turned to leave without another word.
“Really?” Relief crashed over me so hard my knees almost buckled. A huge smile broke across my face.
“Did he really come straight to you after surgery?” a nurse beside me asked, eyes wide with shock.
I froze.
True… why would he do that?
The question refused to leave my head. Did Mira ask him to tell me? Or did he choose to come himself?
“Maybe the girl told him to inform me,” I said quickly, forcing a laugh so the nurse wouldn’t start imagining things.
But deep down, a strange warmth lingered in my chest.
Weeks passed.
I slowly settled into hospital life. The days became more balanced, and eventually I was assigned to take care of Mira full-time.
One afternoon during break, I sat with her, laughing over Korean dramas like old friends.
“Nurse Juliet,” she whispered playfully, “I think I’ve found someone even more handsome than those Korean actors… and he’s real.”
I raised an eyebrow, already knowing what was coming.
“Mr Vincent,” she whispered.
I burst out laughing. “I knew you were going to say that!”
“The last time I saw him, do you know what I said?” I leaned in with a grin.
She shook her head, curious.
“Chiseumeda,” I whispered.
She exploded into laughter and I joined her.
“You thought he was one of the K-drama actors?” she teased.
I nodded playfully.
“What did he say then?” she asked.
I smirked. “Nothing… He already thinks I’m crazy.”
We were still laughing when she suddenly became serious.
“Do you know what he told me right before my surgery?”
I shook my head.
“He said, ‘I won’t let anything happen to you. Trust me.’”
She paused, eyes glowing with admiration.
“Many doctors say things like that… but when he said it, it felt different. Like I could see in his eyes how badly he wanted to save me.”
Something inside me shifted.
I didn’t understand what this feeling was yet… but it was there.
One day, I was doing my rounds, feeling lighter than usual, when Miriam came running toward me, breathless.
“Juliet! Congratulations — we’ve been assigned to new doctors!”
“Really? Really?” I asked, genuinely excited.
She nodded. “I got Doctor Joseph.”
I smiled. That was good news.
Then another nurse appeared behind her.
“Juliet,” she called.
“Mr Vincent is looking for you.”
My smile froze.
Mr Vincent.
“What?” I shouted, heart slamming against my ribs.
“Who?” I asked again, praying I misheard.
“Mr Vincent,” she repeated.
“Why… why would he…” My voice died in my throat.
Slowly, I turned to Miriam.
She was smiling from ear to ear.
“Yes… you’re his assistant now.”
“What?!” I shouted, my voice echoing down the corridor.
This couldn’t be happening.
Not him…
Not after everything that happened between us.
My dream job had just turned into my worst nightmare.
Because the one person I was trying to avoid…
was now the one I had to face every single day.
