Episode 5

Layla

I meet up with Kenzie at the pool. Customers are allowed but its mainly used for staff. She saw me and stopped her laps to come towards me. I enter the pool’s cool waters and meet Kenzie not far from where I entered. Shes a fast swimmer. We have the pool to ourselves at the moment so although I really want to, I have to ignore the urge to kiss her adorable face. It must be one of those tide pools because I feel the waves bob me up and down in the water. But Kenzie isn’t bobbing. Shes just treading like its normal water. Before I tried to say something I was hit with a large wave and thrown under. I try to rise to the top but the water seemed solid. Then I seemed to rise. I couldn’t breathe. I reached the surface of the water only to find myself inside a ball of water. I started to panic as the corners of my vision goes dim. I cant hold my breathe forever. I felt my energy deplete and my oxygen-starved brain begins to shut down and the next thing I know, Ive passed out.

I wake up, Saturated, beside the pool with Kenzie worried by my side staring at the ceiling. I use the energy I have left to raise my hand to her face, but I cant reach so it hits her breast instead. She looks down with relief and I see shes been crying. “Im ok” I say. She starts Laughing. I don’t know why. All I can think of Is her. All of her. With me and that her laugh is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. I sit up and she stops laughing telling me to be careful. I smile as I hear sirens “Im not being arrested again am I? as my heart sinks. ‘not again. I didn’t do anything’ I think of as Kensie calmed my nerves my saying, no. its an ambulance. A special paramedic with check you over and One of my good demon friends will make sure your ok.” I nod, and think about why she called demons to take care of me when they could take control of me. Not one day ago she told me this would never happen again.

So as Im carted off to the hospital, I keep looking at my phone. Hoping for an explanation. Doesn’t she care anymore? Did she find someone else? Why risk me being in the hands of any other demons besides her. And then I realised. Im expendable. Replaceable, Disposable. She doesn’t want me to die but she doesn’t want me either. My heart sinks but I dare not cry. The rest is a blur. The conversations of the doctors around me, the countless tests, and All I can think of now is where do I live. I cant live with Kenzie anymore if she doesn’t want me. I cannot bare to go to my parents house but I do still have Jamie. We haven’t talked in a while but she might spot me.before I could text anyone I get a text from Kenzie “Ur not disposable. Not to me. I still want you around. We have a lot to discuss when you come back home.” My depression lifts, me emotions soar, and I feel lighter than ever before. I get the all clear and Kenzie comes to pick me up.

In 2 days both the police and the Ambulance come for me. I must have quite the record. We stay in the car silently on the way home, ignoring the fact that I want to do more than just kiss her, I want to be her entire world. We get back home and we both go to my room, which is pristine and tidy as always. I sit on the bed and say noting until she is ready to. “The day I chose you, was the first time I saw your file. Your personality, your interests. But it had something unexpected as well. I thought it was a glitch. So I ignored it. But it wasn’t a glitch. It’s a part of who you are. some part of you, when we met, was dormant. Sleeping. Until it emerged. Its emerged. The weird elemental accidents happening the last few days was you coming into your power. Your half demon, Layla. Half demon half human. Ipulled up your parents file. Your dad is human and your mum is human but your mum cheated on your dad so hes not really your dad.” I sat there, soaking all of it, reeling from the news. But out of all the random rumbling one thought is echoing louder than the rest ‘I CAN BE WITH KENZIE’ sad, right? “Did she tell him?” I ask. Kenzie shook her head no. but still. I had more hope that day than any other day.

The next morning I noticed my shoes didn’t fit anymore. They were too small. And new too, dang. I go barefoot. I start brushing my hair. I swear its longer than it was yesterday. The ends now reached my midback. What is happening to me? Maybe my unlocking my demon side is making these changes. But why? I go to Kenzie to ask her. “I don’t know. It could mean you’re a royal but even commoners grow a little when they get their magic. But this is overkill. It doesn’t change your appearance that much. Or at least it shouldn’t. I Start towalk to my room, disappointed, when Kenzie called out. I have a few gifts for you. I know its not Christmas or your birthday but you deserve them. She handed me 3 separate gifts. I carry them to my room, and open them one by one. The first one looks like a wrapped bag of some sort. Ripping the wrapping revealed cat litter. What a strange gift. The second one was trickier to open but when I managed to destroy the wrapper it revealed, Keys? What could this possibly be for? The third gift, wasn’t really a gift. It was a drawing Of a ford with notes like, come outside, the boot answers all and destiny awaits etc.

Well I followed it like a treasure map. Literally there was a treasure map on the other side. I get outside and the Ford from the drawing is in the lobby driveway. Kenzie is chilling in the passenger seat but I need to go to the alluring rear of the car, I open the hatch and I find. Cat stuff. Cat towers, cat food, water bowls everything a cat will ever need. But no cat. Kenzie chuckled, “lets go, we are going to be late!” late? For what? I get into the drivers side but I dare not do anything. I don’t hae a licence. “Look in the overhead compartment” I did as she said and something fell down. My licence. My very own licence. “How?” I ask. “I know people.” She replied. I start the car as Kenzie teaches me to drive. She gives me directions and I follow them, driving is not easy but I think I got it now. Kenzies directions end when we hit a massive shopping centre. I find a great parking spot, close to the doors and we go inside. “this is your fourth gift today. You said you wanted one so I called my friend who reserved us one. Kenzie stops at a pet store. You get your very own Kitten.

We were at the pool. It was a normal pool but Layla was bobbing like it had waves. Then, A large wave pulled her under. I didn’t panic, she could swim. I didn’t start panicking until I saw a large sphere of water rise above the pool. With Layla inside.I could see she was struggling with the giant water bubble but was getting nowhere. I see her eyes go dim, and when she fell unconscious, her magic stopped.but she wasn’t breathing. I tried to do that first aid that I learned, turn her to the side, see if there is anything blocking the airway but no. shes just not breathing. I called 2 of my doctor friends to take a look. I cant trust her with normal doctors but I cant trust her with rando demon doctors either. I know when Layla wakes up because I guess she was trying to reack my shoulders but Im too tall so she ends up grabbing my boob. Its before they get here and she looks around confused and dazed, cant really seem to make a proper sentence, They take her away in an ambulance and I text my doctor friend who works in a private hospital.
