A CHANCE

“So where does this leave you?” Lily asked her friend, more concerned about Katerina’s well being than anything else. “Will you still go back to work knowing that he is there?” “I have to.” Katerina said with a determined tone. “His company is the place I need to be at for the pack.” She paused to listen if Lily or Jeremiah would contradict her and at the slightest hint that Jeremiah was about to speak up, Katerina stopped him. “I know you will tell me that the pack doesn’t need me to do this or that I could easily find another job, but I will only get the experience I need here.” She insisted. “Also they pay really well so the money I will send back will help the pack a lot.” “We both know your people don’t want your money, Kat.” Lily said in as sad tone, disappointed that her Alpha would think that of them. “Lily, what is an Alpha’s role to his or her people?” This was a question that she didn’t need to ask, one that every wolf knew deep down. “To protect, lead, and provide for their people.” Lily grumbled as she knew the last role was what Katerina was hinting at. “I need to provide for our pack, we lost everyone at a young age and I am truly thankful for Jeremiah standing in as an older brother to all of us, but I have been a failure as an Alpha.” Katerina sighed and shook her head.  Jeremiah should never have needed to step up that way, he wasn’t the Alpha’s heir, she was. But since she needed to finish school and her pack insisted she go to University for her sake, she hadn’t been able to care for them the way an Alpha should have. “Kat, I did so willingly.” Jeremiah reminded her, something he had repeated a thousand times at this point. “But you don’t need to keep doing it.” Katerina explained as her voice cracked. “You and Lily should be trying to have pups, not running my pack for me. I want the two people I love the most in the world to be happy too.” “Awwww, you’re the sweetest, Kat.” Lily giggled at the other end of the line. “We want you to find your happiness too.” “Kat, maybe you should give this Rogue Alpha a chance?” Jeremiah suggested, his hesitation clear in his tone. He knew his Alpha wouldn’t be happy with his suggestion, but he was only looking out after her. “You can’t be serious right now?!” Katerina was appalled by her Beta’s suggestion. “You know exactly who he is, Jeremiah, you know exactly what kind of a person he is, how could you say such a thing?” “Kat, I only know what the rumors say.” Jeremiah tried his best to remain calm despite Katerina’s agitated state. It was in every Beta’s nature to both follow and be a sounding board for their Alphas. Packs were supposed to be families, where the leadership worked together to give them all a good life. “You know how much pack wolves hate Rogues, the palace despises them. They even go on an annual Rogue hunt!” Jeremiah exclaimed in disgust.  In the Werewolf world, just as all packs had an Alpha, all Alphas had leaders, the King of Alphas.  All wolves were naturally inclined to follow him, in return he gave them his protection and supported them in whatever way they needed. Or so it was supposed to be, the latest King of Alphas cared more about his control over the packs than about their welfare. When Katerina’s parents died, they should have become rogues, but since Katerina had shifted at an early age, the Alpha title naturally shifted to her. Rogues often smelled repulsive to pack wolves, but her people’s scent did not change, thus her shift saved them from a horrible fate. “Fine.” Katerina said as she surrendered to Jeremiha’s insistence. “But if this doesn’t work out and he ends up ruining our pack, I won’t stop myself from saying I told you so.” She heard Jeremiah chuckle over the phone. “That’s impossible, Kat. Something tells me you already have him wrapped around your tiny finger pining for you.” He told her. “I won’t make it easy for him either.” Katerina warned, there was no way she was going to let someone like the Rogue Alpha so easily into her heart. “Tell everyone I miss them and that I will come and visit soon.” “We miss you, but go focus on your mate Kat.” Lily said in a sincere tone, she always had her best friend’s happiness in mind. “The pack will not suddenly die nor will we abandon you. You are our Alpha, we live and die with you.” “I’ll see you soon.” Katerina quickly dropped the call not wanting to hear what else her well meaning friends had to say. She lay back down on her bed and closed her eyes dreading the next day, she knew she would have to face him and apologize. What she did was wrong and very un-alpha like. ‘We need a run.’ She heard Calathea say, making her smile. ‘A run sounds nice.’ Katerina said in agreement as she slowly stripped her clothes and opened the window to her room. She looked around before shifting and jumping out. When she knew the cost was clear, she shifted and made her way to the forest.  As she ran deeper into the woods, she suddenly became aware of another scent chasing her.  ‘Calathea!’ Katerina warned as she felt her wolf change directions in the hopes of confusing whoever was chasing them. At first she thought it had worked as she weaved through trees and even climbed some trees just to confuse her pursuer. When she finally reached a river, she looked around and smelled the air. There wasn’t a foreign scent around.  As Katerina made a move to turn and head back to her apartment for safety, that’s when it hit her, she smelled his scent before she saw him, her mate.
