Katerina leaned against the elevator wall as she braced herself in case her mate or his beta came running after her.
It felt like the slowest ten seconds of her life as she watched the doors close and the elevator lurch as it descended.
She was puzzled that the man didn’t chase after her, weren’t most Alphas supposed to be demanding and jealous? Or maybe since he wasn’t an Alpha of the blood he didn’t have the desire to claim what was his.
Katerina was still deep in thought when the elevator doors opened at the ground floor.
“Are you alright, miss?” A woman asked, pulling Katerina from her thoughts.
‘She’s a wolf too.’ Calathea told Katerina as the woman’s scent invaded her senses. ‘She’s a ranked wolf?’
She decided to pretend not to notice that the woman was different. Instead, she simply nodded and rushed out of the elevator, not looking back if the mate she had just left had chosen not to chase her.
When Katerina had moved to this city, she rented an apartment that was quite close to the nearby woods but not too far from her office.
Initially, she had assumed that most of the wolves would be living in that area, but she was pleasantly surprised that not a lot of them did.
She liked her privacy, she didn’t want other wolves asking why she was so far from her pack or even what pack she was from. Her goal was to remain as unnoticed as possible, something she failed to do when she met the rogue Alpha.
Katerina took deep breaths as she tried to settle her raging heart.
She had been told how life changing meeting one’s mate was going to be, she just never expected it to be this intense.
Every fiber of her being was telling her to go to him, to run back into his arms and accept him, but could she?
He was the Rogue Alpha, he was said to be savage and brutal, if he was her mate then her pack would become his pack. Would they then become rogues, or would the rogues become pack wolves?
The weight of her worries were just too much as she decided to give one of the older members of her pack a call. Maybe they could help her decide.
Katerina paced back and forth across her apartment as she waited for him to pick up. Jeremiah was not that much older than her, but at least he was a teenager when most of their pack was brutally slaughtered.
“Alpha Katerina, it’s been a while.” Jeremiah’s cool and calming voice said over the phone, making Katerina smile.
Hearing someone from home always made her feel better.
“We’ve discussed this Jeremiah, no need to address me as Alpha. When I find my mate I won’t be an Alpha anymore and he will take over our pack.” She scolded Jeremiah.
“Even if you do get a mate, Katerina, you will always be our Alpha.” He said with a chuckle. “What’s up?” He asked.
Sometimes Katerina forgot that Jeremiah was only thirteen years older than her. He had been eighteen when the pack was invaded and was tasked with protecting the young.
It was also Jeremiah that had saved Katerina from her attacker and slaughtered most of the wolves that had been left behind.
“I may have met him.” Katerina admitted with a sigh.
“And you’re torn?” Jeremiah asked, knowing that this was Katerina’s biggest struggle. “Who is he? No that doesn’t matter, what kind of a person is he? Is he a ranked wolf somewhere? Many of us assumed that your mate might be either a powerful Beta or a smaller Alpha.”
Katerina frowned at the thought, she knew that her people wanted her to find her mate for her own happiness, it was said that a wolf would always be incomplete without their mate.
“Is that Kat?” She heard her best friend call from the other end of the line.
Jeremiah was mated to Katerina’s best friend, Lily. It made Katerina so happy when they broke the news to her, she couldn’t be happier that her strongest adviser and warrior was mated to her best friend.
“Yes it’s Kat, but she has a problem.” Jeremiah told his mate.
“You can put me on speaker, Jeremiah, I don’t mind.” Katerina said as she suppressed a laugh. She knew that he was itching to do just that and Lily would soon be bugging him to give her the phone.
“Kat!” Lily screamed through the phone. “Why the sudden call? We thought you would still be at work or something. Oh and no need to worry about the pack, Jer and I are handling the businesses and dividing the income between the families. We’ve also placed aside fifty percent for you.”
“Lily, you didn’t need to put that much aside for me.” Katerina frowned at the thought of more money being left in her account, money that could be used to help other pack members.
“Katerina, the pack is fine financially, you don’t need to keep pushing yourself like this.” Jeremiah sighed audibly.
“Wait, did she call to talk about finances or was there something else? You seemed really worried when I walked in.” Lily pointed out, reminding Katerina about why she had originally called.
“Right, Lily I want this to stay between the three of us, you cannot tell anyone nor can you suddenly freak out.” Katerina slowly told her friend, knowing that Lily would be excited to hear that she had found her mate.
“Okay, okay, I promise, now tell us.” Lily nagged.
“I met my mate-”
“Oh my gosh Kat this is amazing! Who is he? Have you mated? Has he marked you? Is he hot? When are you coming back to the pack to introduce him to us? Wait why are you speaking to us, go be with your mate?” Lily suddenly slowed down as she realized that Katerina was speaking to them instead of being with her mate.
“Well, if you let me finish what I was saying you would know why I’m on the phone with you guys.” Katerina chuckled, her friend was always the time to jump into assumptions like this, not letting her finish her statement.
“Right, sorry.” Lily said as she allowed Katerina to continue.
“As I was saying, I met my mate today and he is the CEO of the company I work at.” Katerina paused, knowing that Lily wouldn’t be able to stop herself from saying something.
“Oh wow, a rich mate.” Lily teased.
“Wait, isn’t your company owned by that man?” Jeremiah asked.
He knew the most about other packs and what was going on in the supernatural world. Her pack stayed out of it for the most part, especially since the King of Wolves believed that their pack was long gone.
“The Rogue Alpha.” Katerina said with a sigh as images of the most handsome man on earth flashed through her mind. Every fiber of her being told her to be with him, and yet her mind hesitated.
“No.” Jeremiah gasped when Katerina confirmed who her mate was. “Now I understand why you’re so torn.”
“If it were any other man I would be fine. But the leader of the rogues? A man people say is so vile, someone who was said to have been thrown out of his own pack? How can I hand him our pack?” Katerina began to sob as she let all of her worries out.
A rogue was a rogue for a reason, it was because they had been sent away or they had run away. You didn’t become the leader of criminals by being scared.
