She breathed in and willed her mind to be as still as possible. Now was the time to let that strange inner sense which told her sometimes of things that were yet to come, or possibly might be happening at the very same moment, or occasionally spoke to her in dreams, do its thing. It wasn’t perfect, of course — she hadn’t noticed a damn thing until she’d actually seen the demon or whatever it was standing in her hallway — but on many occasions, she’d been able to tell if something terrible had happened in a place, or simply whether the tensions between the people who lived in a house had built up their own dark residue, laden with the anger and resentment that had grown over time to take on a life of their own.
