# CHAPTER 6: THE AIR-GAP BENCH
`11:04 AM.`
"Don't mount it on the campus guest network," David Cole said, his hand resting on the gear shift of the Subaru. "The university firewall will catch the packet weight of the directory tree and flag it to the board of trustees. Go somewhere quiet."
Tomi didn’t say goodbye. He just popped the door handle, stepped out into the biting, horizontal slush of the Harrison Street deck, and let the heavy door slam shut behind him.
He didn’t look back to see the Subaru Outback pull out of the stall. He just put his head down and walked.

`11:18 AM.`
The sub-basement of the Science and Engineering Labs didn’t get campus Wi-Fi. It didn't get cellular reception. It sat forty feet beneath the Chicago water table, surrounded by five-foot-thick reinforced foundational concrete, smelling of old copper piping, ozone, and dead cardboard.
Room B-14 was the Graduate Hardware Disposal Lab. To the university administration, it was a storage closet for broken 2011 Dell monitors.
To the international engineering TAs, it was a speakeasy.
Tomi pushed the door open.
Sitting at a long, scarred wooden workbench under a single flickering fluorescent tube was Priya. She had her silver thermos next to her, a pair of fine-tip tweezers in her right hand, and a pair of magnifying binocular goggles strapped over her forehead, delicately scraping the thermal paste off a fried motherboard.
She didn't look up as the door groaned shut.
"If you're here to ask me to fix your syntax on the socket assignment, Oloyede, you're out of luck," she said to the motherboard. "Vance gave the class average a 62. I am currently experiencing the urge to walk into the lake."
Tomi reached behind him.
*Click.* He turned the heavy brass deadbolt on the lab door, locking them in from the inside.
The tweezers in Priya’s hand froze mid-air.
Slowly, she pushed the magnifying goggles up onto her forehead. She turned around on her stool, her dark eyes dropping instantly to Tomi’s right hand, which was gripping the silver, crinkling anti-static Faraday bag.
"Tomi," she said, her voice dropping into a flat, dangerous register. "Why did you just lock a university sub-basement door?"
"Because if I’m wrong about what's inside this bag, I'm going to federal prison," Tomi said. He walked over to the wooden bench and set the matte-black military SSD down right next to her silver thermos. "And if I'm right, the guy who gave it to me is going to federal prison."
Priya looked at the silver foil. She didn't touch it. Being an international student on an Indian passport gave her the exact same internal Geiger counter for legal radioactivity that Tomi possessed.
"Who gave it to you?"
"A man who paid fourteen thousand dollars of my tuition this morning using the Department of Defense's checking account," Tomi said. He pulled off his wet hoodie, dropping it onto a stack of dead servers. "It’s a 1998 source-code repository for the Federal Reserve wire network. The Pentagon wants me to find a backdoor in it."
Priya stared at him for four entirely silent seconds.
Then, she looked down at the bag.
"You didn't plug it into your Lenovo."
"I'm not insane, Priya."
"Good," she breathed, the tension in her shoulders instantly pivoting into cold, hyper-focused engineering pragmatism. She slid off her stool. "Because if a DC3 handler hands you an SSD, the firmware controller isn't just an SSD. It’s a passive keystroke logger with a hardcoded burst-transmitter."
She pointed a sharp finger at a dusty, beige **Dell OptiPlex 7010** desktop tower sitting on the bottom shelf of the junk rack. It was a relic from 2013—no Bluetooth card, no modern Wi-Fi chip.
"Grab that tower," Priya ordered, already reaching for a Phillips-head screwdriver. "Put it on the bench. We are physically castrating it."
For the next eight minutes, the sub-basement sounded like a chop shop.
Tomi held the beige tower steady while Priya jammed the screwdriver into the chassis, popped the side panel off, and went to work on the motherboard like a trauma surgeon.
*Snap.* She physically snapped the green Network Interface Card out of its PCI slot.
*Crunch.* She used a pair of wire cutters to snip the internal copper leads running to the Ethernet RJ-45 port on the back of the case.
"No copper, no radio, no silicon," Priya muttered, blowing a cloud of 13-year-old dust out of the open chassis. "If this machine wants to send a single packet of data to Fort Meade, it will physically have to sprout vocal cords and shout it up the elevator shaft."
She plugged a cheap, standalone 1080p monitor into the tower, hooked up a wired USB keyboard, and shoved a yellow thumb drive containing a clean, non-persistent live boot of **Tails Linux** into the front port.
She hit the power button. The OptiPlex groaned, its dying fan sounding like a lawnmower, before rendering a crisp, safe, completely isolated desktop environment.
"Your turn," Priya said, stepping back and crossing her arms.
Tomi picked up the matte-black drive. He tore the seal on the Faraday bag. He took the braided USB-C-to-USB-A cable, plugged the square end into the SSD, and pushed the rectangular end into the front of the dead Dell tower.
The Linux terminal blinked.

Tomi leaned over the keyboard. His heart was doing that familiar, violent thumping against his sternum. Beside him, Priya leaned in so close her shoulder pressed against his.
He opened the terminal directory.

`ls -la`
The screen generated a list of five files.
Four of them were standard, massive `.tar.gz` compressed archives containing thousands of lines of legacy C++ banking architecture.
The fifth file was a plain, uncompressed text document.

"Open the readme," Priya whispered.
Tomi typed `cat README_FIRST.txt` and hit Enter.
The text rendered instantly in bright, monospaced white font across the center of the dark monitor:

The air in Room B-14 went dead, absolute zero.
Tomi’s lungs locked. Beside him, Priya let out a tiny, choked, involuntary gasp that died in the back of her throat.
*Turn around.* The file was modified in October of 1998. The drive had been inside a sealed, military-grade Faraday cage for three weeks.
Slowly—moving with the agonizing, stiff resistance of a man trapped inside a nightmare—Tomi turned his head away from the monitor, looking over his right shoulder toward the back corner of the pitch-black storage closet.
