I closed my eyes. I could practically hear the minutes of my life ticking away. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. I vaguely wondered what would happen if I got out and walked away. I opened the door and got out of the truck. I glanced down the street and then back at the house. I shrugged and walked to the front door. I knocked. No one answered. I could hear loud voices inside. I opened the screen door. “Hello?” I called. Again no one answered. I stepped inside. The house smelled like freshly baked bread. I looked around. A living room. Knickknacks here and there. A sofa, the TV on with no sound, a cat watching me from a chair next to a small table with a sewing machine on it. “Hello!” I walked into the living room. I looked to my right and saw the kitchen. Inside several people were talking
