CHAPTER 3

DECLAN'S CONDITIONS I had an appointment at Declan's office the following morning. He was standing by the window, surveying the vast estate, when I found him. I walked in and he turned, gesturing for me to take a seat. "Miss Ronald," he said, "there are several conditions we need to discuss regarding our arrangement." I said, "Of course, Mr. Owen," taking a seat across from his desk. "First and foremost, our marriage is going to be strictly professional," he stated as he took a seat. There won't be any romantic involvement or intimacy expectations. Do you get it? I met his look and responded, "I understand." "All right. We'll continue to have separate bedrooms. We'll show each other the proper affection in public, but we'll keep our private lives apart." "I agree," I answered. "Secondly," the speaker went on, "you will receive a monthly stipend for personal spending. This is on top of any expenses associated with upholding our reputation." Saying "thank you," I spoke. "That is very generous." "It's essential for the part you're going to play," he remarked curtly. "You will also have access to a financial advisor to manage any long-term investments or savings." "Thank you very much," I nodded. Thirdly, your right to privacy is really important. As long as your interests and pursuits don't conflict with our public duties or draw undue attention, you are free to pursue them." "I get it," I replied. "I will be discreet." "Fourthly," he continued, "you will be assisted with any household chores or public appearances by a personal assistant. I will receive direct reports from this individual to make sure everything goes as planned." I gave him my word that I would work with them closely. "Fifthly," he leaned back in his chair, "you will be required to sign a prenuptial agreement as a condition of our engagement and subsequent marriage." This will set forth the conditions of any future marital breakup and safeguard our respective rights." I answered, "I expected as much." "I will review it with the lawyer you provided." "All right," he remarked. "It is essential that you feel secure in this arrangement as well." Saying "thank you," I spoke. "I appreciate the consideration." He gave a nod. "At last, you'll accompany me to all business-related activities. These consist of family get-togethers, business events, and charity galas. To preserve the image we are projecting, you must be present." "I get it," I replied. "I will be there." You will also be asked to take part in media appearances and interviews, he continued. Our PR department will get you ready for these events." "I swear to follow their advice," I said. "Outstanding," he exclaimed as he got up. "That brings an end to our arrangement's main requirements. Do you have any inquiries or worries?" I paused to think before I spoke. "How about my family? To what extent will they participate in our public life?" "They will be invited to major events and will be treated with respect," claimed the politician. "However, they should be prepared for media attention and must agree to maintain a level of discretion." "I comprehend," I replied. "I will speak with them about it." "Good," he murmured as he advanced to the door. "If there are no further questions, I believe we have covered everything for now." I halted him with, "One more thing," "How will we handle potential conflicts or disagreements?" His gaze remained blank as he turned to face me. We'll discuss them in secret and find a covert solution. Maintaining our arrangement will depend heavily on communication." "Yes," I said. "I will do my best to communicate openly." "Me too," he replied. "This partnership must be based on mutual respect and understanding." "Thank you," I replied. He gave another nod. Excellent work, Miss Davis. We'll go ahead and start getting ready to announce our engagement. My aide will brief you on the itinerary." "Mr. Owen, thank you," I said as I got to my feet. "You're welcome," he answered back. "Keep in mind that this is a commercial agreement, Serena. Remember that while we proceed." "I promise I will," I told him. "Thank you for your clarity." I felt the weight of our agreement grow more firmly on my shoulders as he opened the door for me and I moved out into the hallway. Sophia, Declan's composed assistant, greeted me as I moved down the hallway. "Miss Ronald, if you would follow me, I will go over your schedule and the upcoming events." "Obviously, Sophia," I replied, stepping into step with her. Sophia showed us around a smaller office and gave us a thorough schedule. "Next Friday is the charity gala, which will be your first engagement. To choose your gown, you must schedule a meeting with the stylist for Monday." "Comprehensive," I said, mentioning the day. She said, "On Tuesday, you'll also have a media training session." "It's essential that you are prepared for any questions the press might have." I told her, "I'll be ready." "On Wednesday, there will be a dinner with some of Mr. Owen's business associates," she continued. "Your presence is required to reinforce the image of a supportive partner." I answered, "I will be present." "Finally, on Thursday, we have a rehearsal for the engagement announcement," she continued. "This will ensure that everything goes smoothly on the day." "I express my gratitude, Sophia." "I appreciate your help in organizing all of this." "That's my responsibility," she responded, smirking a little. "And remember, I'm here to assist you with anything you need." "I will keep that in mind," I smiled in return. I went back to my suite after our conversation, my head racing with the specifics of the upcoming week. Declan had set out very specific requirements that left little space for ambiguity. I was resolved to perform my duty with the same effort and passion that had led me here because I understood what was expected of me. The following few days flew by with a flurry of activity. I went to the stylist's appointment, picked out a gorgeous gown for the gala, and received intensive instruction in the media. Thursday came around, and I felt more ready to announce the engagement. Declan convened another meeting in his office that evening. "Miss Ronald, I wanted to ensure everything is in place for tomorrow." "Yes, Mr. Owen," I replied. "I have followed all the instructions and am ready for the announcement." "Good," he remarked in a nodding tone. "Keep in mind that this is a crucial phase in our agreement. It is imperative that we put forth a calm and cohesive front." "I get it," I replied. "I will not let you down." "I am certain," he answered. "One final thing, Serena." "Yes?" I inquired, piqued. "In public, you may call me Declan," he replied. "It will seem more natural and reinforce our engagement." I said, "Of course, Declan," to see how well I knew his name. With a "very well," he got to his feet. "I'll see you in the morning. Good night's sleep." I said, "Good night, Declan," and I walked out of his office feeling more Purpose Declan's hand was lightly resting on mine as we stood in front of the press the next day. I felt the weight of our pact, and the possibility it represented. As partners in this, we were legally obligated to each other yet proceeded with a shared knowledge of our respective duties. Now that the requirements had been established, it was time to meet them.
