Here she is still in the same little car she had when she left 8 years ago. She wasn’t sad like she was when she left, she wasn’t scared to face the people who made her childhood so unbearable, she was confident, she was going home to take care of her aunt and to open up her own little store, she had already put the down payment on the spot, it was an old library, she remembered sitting there with her mother as a child reading books, it had closed when the owner had went bankrupt, and now it was Ara’s.
In her passenger seat was her dog Laz, her ex did not much like him as it was so she chose to bring him with, he was her companion and would always be her companion, she thought as she reached over to pet his head.
They had just passed the border into Oregon, just a little way more and she would be back home, she watched the towns she passed looking at how much they all had changed since she had left all those years ago.
There were either more stores or more homes, some places seemed like they were abandoned now due to the fires that swept through most of these spots around 5 years after she had left. It was sad, she thought to herself, all those homes with all their souls lost to the fire that could not be controlled.
She came up to a sign that told her she was 30 miles from her destination, a feeling settled in the bottom of her gut, it was not fear or nervousness, it was something else she could not quite pinpoint, she would just have to channel later and see what it was making her feel all jittery.
She decided to stop to fuel up and get a drink at a local gas station before her hometown. This place too, had changed, the pumps were updated now, and it was prepaid only, of course she thought rolling her eyes, so she walked in and got a coffee and paid for her fuel also getting a little treat for Laz. He was such a good patient dog; she could not have asked for a better companion. Other than her boyfriend, the only boyfriend she had ever had.
He was a sweet man and treated her well, but she didn’t have any connection to him, she met him not long after she had moved to Florida and they had been together since, she knew he had felt the same way as her, but they were both comfortable with each other and just zombie through life together, that was until she had to leave for home, this made him quiet upset, mainly because he didn’t want to start over, but she explained that he had to they were not going anywhere with each other and both needed to move on with their lives, after he understood and let her go.
After she was done fueling and Laz did his business, they finished their ride towards town. Once they crossed the threshold, she felt that weird feeling again. Ignoring the slight irritation from it she slowly drove through town looking at everything.
It hadn’t changed as much as the other towns coming in, a few more trees that made her quiet happy, everything was still very pretty and you could tell it was the seaside town it had always been, the main job here was crab fishing, the fishers would be gone for months at a time catching to sell, she wished them well every year they would take off, her father being one of the men who did this.
Sadness came over her thinking of her parents now as she was back home. It was strange, Ara had left in such a bad state, she had hated this place, and over the years as she got older and wiser and more in tune with her inner Witch, she hated it less, she understood it more, she understood the people more, and now she was ok with being here.
At the end of the street, she turned left and drove for a few blocks making a right turn and a few blocks later she was at her aunts’ home, her aunt was waiting outside on her porch with a cup of coffee when she pulled up.
“Oh, my lord child!” she exclaimed when Ara got out of the car. “Look at how you have grown, I have missed you so much!” she hollered running towards her and giving her a hug.
“Aunt Jenna, I too have missed you.” Ara said as she hugged her back tightly.
Jenna stood back and looked at her, “You look so much happier my girl.” She said rubbing her hands up and down Ara’s arms.
“I am truly, I have found peace with myself.” Was all she said back to her.
Jenna rolled her eyes, “You sound like your mother, just no funny business in my house, it still creeps me out.” She said bringing her to the house.
Ara rolled her eyes and chuckled opening the door to let our Laz, who went straight to her aunt.
“Oh, my what a handsome guy you are!” she said petting him, her aunt had always had a soft spot for dogs.
“This is Laz, Larz this is Aunt Jenna, show her your gentleman.” She commanded snapping her fingers.
With that Laz bowed at Jenna’s feet then sat on his rump and held out his paw. “Oh my.” She said mesmerized by the dog.
“Yes, he is quiet smart.” Ara said to her.
“Of course, he is Aradia, he is a witch’s dog.” Was all she said with a smile and invited them in. “Do you plan on living with me?” she asked.
Ara smiled, “No Aunt Jenna, I’m buying back mom and dad’s house.” She said petting her dog.
Jenna looks surprised, “Are you sure dear?” she asked her.
Ara nodded, “Yes I am sure, that is the only place calling out to me.”
“It needs work,” Jenna said.
“Most good things do.” Ara replied.
Jenna looked off into the distance, “When do you open your shop?” she asked Ara.
Ara smiled, “Soon, I’ll start on it in two days, I hope to have it open in a month.” Was her reply.
“Wow so soon, do you need help?” Jenna asked.
Ara looked at her surprised, “Do you know what kind of shop I am opening?” she asked her aunt.
Jenna laughed, “Yes my child I do, it still creeps me out, but I’m so happy to have you home that I would learn more about it for you, I know that was part of the reason why you left.” She said looking sad.
“Yes, it was, but not the whole reason.” Ara said to her, “I would love your help Aunt Jenna.” She said making her aunt smile and look happy again.
They spent the rest of the day talking and going over what needed to be done, Ara would spend the next few days moving into her old family house and fixing it up best she could, then she would start working on her store, she had a lot on her plate, they drove to the house and unpacked her things, what little she did have, into the house.
The moment she walked in the door she felt home, the feeling she hasn’t had since her parents had died, she knew this was why she was back, she needed to be grounded and this, this place, this house, this location, was her source of grounding, her source of power, she felt it as she walked around the house, she felt the hum of the magic that was still in this spiritual spot, this house was in the center of magnetic fields, she felt her inner witch grow.
At the end of this long day she had, her aunt and her ordered take out and sat at her aunts table talking and laughing, sensing how much her aunt needed something, Ara stuck out her hand and conjured her favorite flower, Jenna wanted to freak but she didn’t, she sucked in a breath and her face went a little white, then flushed with love as she grabbed her flower from Ara’s hands, Jenna got up and thanked her kissing her on the forehead and with that she headed to bed.
This woman may be afraid of her magic, but she was the woman she loved the most next to her mother. Jenna knew that, and she knew Ara needed to express herself more, she would just let her do it, eventually she would get used to it right?
~**~
The next day Ara woke up before the sun it was about 6:30 am, she made some coffee and walked out to the back porch to watch the sunset, something she always did.
Her aunt’s house was not by the water like her childhood house was, her aunt’s house was in the middle of town, but she could still watch the sunset. Not to long after her aunt joined her, surprising Ara. “When do you get up this early?” Ara asked.
“I don’t know, it’s been a few weeks now.” She said sitting next to Ara with her own cup of coffee, “Ara, you always did make the best coffee.” She said sipping.
Ara smiled and they fell silent watching as the sun came up over the horizon. This was when Ara felt the most powerful, when the sun shined its power over hers, the moon gave her the same affect, but she loved the sun more, her mother, the exact opposite, said it was because Ara had more fire in her than Grounding, her mother was a child of the earth, though they had power over all elements there was always one that was more powerful than the rest, her mother’s was earth, Ara’s was fire.
She smiled and closed her eyes as the sun warmed her, it was spring, with summer just around the corner, she loved the heat, but what she missed most was the rain that Oregon would get constantly, it washed away the negative, it put out the fires, it cleansed the earth of everything. And she knew they were in for some rain here soon, she welcomed it like she welcomed the sun.
“When do you want to head to the house my dear?” her aunt asked after a while of not talking.
Ara snapped to attention, “Whenever you are ready, I have a lot to do there today.” She said to her.
Jenna nodded, “I hope you don’t mind, yesterday while you were busy, I called our local contractor to come over today around 10 am to look at the house and give you an estimate.” She said to her.
This startled Ara a little, “Ok?” she took a deep breath, “It should be alright I guess, it’s a small town as always I should expect people to be close to me.”
Jenna looked at her, “Yes child you should, I believe you understand more now than you did at 18.” She said to her.
“I do.” Ara nodded. “Well let’s get ready it is now almost 8 am and I need to shop for a few things first.” She said getting up and stretching. Jenna did the same.
“Ok, I’m going to shower then we will go. Dress cool my dear we can already feel the heat setting in.” she said as she walked in.
Smiling to herself, Ara shook her head, always a mother, she thought, she knew it was going to be a hot one, so getting to the house to open all the windows was a must, they needed to hurry.
An hour later they showed up at the house, Ara opened all the windows upstairs and downstairs. This house was a large three-story Victorian, it had not been taken care of the best since it was sold and this made her quite angry, but she would nurse it back to its original glory.
The third floor was an attic big enough to be a living room, the 2nd floor had four bedrooms and a bathroom. And on the main level there was an office a sunroom kitchen dining and living room.
She did not know where she would start but she knew how she wanted the place to look, she knew her bedroom would be up in the attic because it was big and beautiful and the only room that looked out over the trees and sea. That was her ground spot.
It was big enough she knew she could add a small bath to it, the thought making her smile the other rooms thankfully did not need to much just some patch work and new painting. It appears they left most of it alone.
The main floor, the kitchen would need updated for sure, but keeping its oldish appeal, she loved the old double oven she had, but needed a new island stove, the one there was falling to pieces, the sink and windows needed replaced.
There were a few broken stained windows in the greenery area she would need replaced, she loved the stain glass and knew she would have to have it ordered, that too would get pricey. The living room floor needed sanded down and refinished to get rid of all the scratches and the huge fireplace needed overhauled, she got all these ideas written down while her aunt helped clean.
It was just a little after ten am when she heard a knock at the door, not really wanting company but knew it was the contractor he let her aunt invite them in.
“Ara, come please!” her aunt hollered.
Rolling her eyes and giving an inner groan she walked her way back towards the front door, when she rounded the corner, she stopped and stared as her aunt went on and on with none other than Kevin Hayze. He had not changed much, he was taller and looked like a damn body builder his arms barely fit into the tight black shirt he was wearing, he also had on work jeans that were stained with pain and goddess knows what else, then he laughed at something her aunt had said and turned his eyes towards her, her heart stopped.
The moment he looked at her she felt a snap in her inner self, the tugging she had felt since she was home coming lose and it was because of him!
How could a man make her feel like she was destined to be near him! His eyes were more fiercely green then when he was a boy and a teenager, his hair was shaggy and black falling around his ears, she felt as if her soul was reaching out for him, what the hell was going on? She asked herself.
Kevin had been joking around with Jenna for a few minutes when she called to Ara, he had heard she was coming back home, but he needed to see it to believe it, she had been the laughingstock of school and of the town, even more so after her parents had died.
Kevin was never one to participate in the bullshit his friends and co-students had played a part in growing up. He stuck to himself during those times, unless it was her, he had always tried to distract them back then sometimes it worked, she would always just stare at him then run off after he would give her a small smile.
He knew the rumors he had seen her mother do magic and it never scared him, he knew she was a witch, and he knew the two of them were very powerful, he had always felt this pull to her, but never acted on it, he just felt like he needed to protect her a little when he was younger.
And now that he turned his attention to her, he felt the pull again, more defined this time, his inner self telling him she was his home. This startled him a little, but he could not take his eyes off her.
When she was younger, she was a little chubbier, her hair had been shorter and lighter, her eyes had been more of a dull grey. Now her hair was to her waist full thick and beautifully brown, her eyes were an electric grey, she had freckles on her nose that made him urn to kiss them, her breasts were fuller, and she was a tad bit taller than she was at 18, she was also more muscular, less skinny, this woman worked out.
She stared at him like she had seen a ghost, he decided to say something, “Aradia, it’s been a long time.” He said to her.
Finding her voice finally she said, “You’re the contractor?”
Kevin chuckled, “Yes I took over for my dad after he retired.” He said to her.
Ara heard the pitter patter of paws on the floor, sensing her wolf walked up behind her and stood protectively next to her, she heard him start to growl and felt his tension, he was not much for men, one of the reasons why her ex did not like him, “Hush, you, he is alright.” She said in a soft tone looking at Larz and patting his head, “Now sit.” She said when he calmed down.
Kevin eyed the dog, “That is one big ass dog you have there.” He said to her looking back at her pretty face.
Ara smiled a little, and evil glint to her face, “The better to eat you with.” She spoke.
Everyone was silent, for just a mere second, then all three of them started to laugh. Laughing felt good, Ara did not spend most of her life laughing, so this was nice. “I’m sorry this is Larz, he is my wolf hybrid, he isn’t too keen on men, but he is harmless unless I say otherwise.” She spoke. Then looked at Larz, “Go say hi you big bully.” She told him.
Hunched a little he walked over to Kevin, sniffed then barked, walked back to Ara and sat and huffed, “Well then.” She spoke.
“I guess we know what he thinks of me.” Kevin said chuckling.
Ara smiled, “Shall we go over what I need done?” she asked him.
Kevin raised his eyebrows, “Are you hiring me then?”
Ara rolled her eyes, “Obviously.”
“Well, I figured you would just use your magic,” he said to her.
Ara stopped and looked at him, “I don’t use it for personal gain, this house could fall apart as a consequence if I did, now, come, let’s talk.” She said and walked around with him, the dog, and the list.
Jenna watched as Ara and Kevin made their way around the house, when they were out of sight she sighed and went back to cleaning, the two of them always felt right to her, Her sister in law used to say, there is a boy who protects her little Aradia, a boy who will be available to her later on in life, her soul mate, she would feel this pull suddenly and not understand it, but it was the moon who would gift him, for she would need his love.
Jenna never understood it and would always roll her eyes at her sister-in-law, but now she understood, Ara’s mother was talking about her soulmate a once in a lifetime love, Jenna had also had this. She met her husband after her brother married Lilith, Lilith had said the same thing to her, pressed her to talk to this man, saying he was the other half of her soul.
When she first met her husband she had felt a weird pull in her gut when they locked eyes it was as if the link snapped into place, and from there on out they had been like one, when he passed she felt a part of herself die as well, she wanted to be with him, but Lilith had come to her in a dream, she had told her to open her mind to her daughter and to call her home, it was time for her daughter to love, to move on, to be happy, and Ara needed Jenna to do that.
After that she did everything Lilith had told her that night in her dreams, and she knew that soon she would see her beloved husband again, just as soon as Ara was happy.
