Chapter 40 - Letting You Go

2087 Words
It was finally the day they would return home. With everything going on and the lingering threat of the Greco’s making a move on their family, even from as far away as Chicago, both Romano brothers had chosen to come along with their older brother on the private jet. They would travel to New York and conduct their businesses from there for the next couple of weeks, or as long as this whole rival mess sorted itself out. The Romano brothers were much stronger when they stayed together. The now larger group had promptly boarded the sleek jet over an hour ago and were at that moment soaring high through the skies headed for New York’s private runway, estimated to be about less than half an hour away by now. Alexa sat in her corner seat, busily working away. She had a lot running through her head as she finished up making the important meetings and reservations for her boss when they finally arrived. There was so much to do. And then there was her ongoing concern hidden away at the back of her mind. Concern that she may be working for some sort of illegal corporation. But none of it made any sense. Why would Dante project himself to be a highly confident billionaire businessman, as the head of his family’s company Romano Enterprises, if he were doing anything illegal? Why would a man like him even need to break the law? He was rich, for f**k sakes! Sighing, she shook the idea from her head and focused instead on finishing her next job. One that she had been working on since before she even started working for Dante as his assistant. Romano Enterprises held an Annual Charity Ball each year to raise money for several different foundations. The event was famously known to blow people’s minds with its luxuriously overpriced food, music and of course, prime location. Alexa had been put in charge of organising it over a month ago, and the event was to take place tomorrow night in the Grand Ballroom of a Hotel called The St. Regis New York. As per her usual methods, the skilled organiser had everything prepared for the evening, including a brand new black and gold Dormeiul Vanquish II suit, in Mr. Romano’s exact size with a pair of matching polished black Italian loafers for him to wear. She had even gone to the trouble of picking out a special pair of diamond cufflinks for him, to go along with it. Her mind was fixated on what she was doing as a figure came across to sit on the chair beside her. “Hey you… boss wants you go see him.” Luca announced with a smile. “He’s in the back room, waiting.” Her widened brown eyes flicked to him. “I’m not in trouble, am I?” Luca gave a laugh before he proceeded to stand up. “I highly doubt it.” With a playful wink, he darted off, leaving her to do as she had been asked. Closing her laptop, Alexa put her things away and cautiously made her way down the length of the jet towards the back room. The same back room she had been caught singing in on the earlier flight they had all shared to Chicago. - Alexa knocked at the door before Dante’s voice called out from inside. “Come in.” She opened the door and stepped inside to see him seated on the edge of the bed with a dazzling smile spread across his face. “Please bella, close the door.” (beautiful) he gestured with his hand towards it. Alexa did as he asked and waited to be told what to do next. “You wanted to see me, Mr. Romano?” she asked hesitantly. Dante’s expression suddenly hardened upon hearing her call him that. “What have I asked for you to call me?” he reminded sternly. She looked embarrassed. “Sorry, Dante.” she corrected with a small smile. “That’s my girl… come on, come and sit with me.” Dante patted the bed beside him. It was only now that she had noticed the two glasses of champagne sitting beside him on a small table he had pulled over closer to him. As she sat down on the edge of the bed beside him, Dante reached over and grasped both glasses, handing one over to her. “What’s this for?” she asked, politely taking it from him. “Let’s just say, I’ve heard how well you’ve done with the upcoming Charity Ball and I thought we should celebrate your success.” he explained casually. “It’s hardly my success alone. I have had people helping me get things ready around the clock since this whole thing started.” She tried to push away the praise in all her modesty. But Dante saw right thought it. “You don’t take praise well, do you Alexa?” he asked her calmly. She turned her gaze downwards with embarrassment now, fiddling with the glass in her hands. “I guess I never have.” she explained. It was true, she hated receiving praise. But how could he read her so openly like this? “I feel like you know me a little too well.” she admitted. “You forget our conversation from several days ago, bella. I explained about my gift, the ability to read people’s body language…” he reminded her, placing his hand onto her upper thigh. The moment he had, her heart rate steadily increased, pulsing heavily over and over within her chest at the closeness alone. His hand felt warm, comforting against her smooth skin. “Mr. Rom… I mean, Dante.” she quickly corrected herself. “I think we should have a talk about… this.” she gestured between them with her hand. He merely smirked, his hand slowly moving higher up the length of her thigh. “What would you like to talk about, bella?” (beautiful) he asked seductively with a husky voice. Fighting to remain in control of her skyrocketing senses, Alexa swallowed nervously before she went on. “While I am very grateful to have been offered this position, as your assistant, I’m not sure I can continue working for you like this.” She finally got it out, and this caused Dante’s hand to suddenly pause where it was. She gave him a side glance, worried that he may take it the wrong way and go into a massive, angered tantrum. But instead, he remained strangely calm as he spoke next. “Is this your… resignation?” She nodded her head solemnly, “Yes.” He nodded his head slowly, suddenly removing his hand from her thigh and straightening up a little. “I understand why you feel you need to do this, Alexa.” he admitted, staring ahead with a void expression painted across his face. “You do?” she asked him with surprise. He nodded. “I’ll admit that things have… progressed between us. You feel confused by the blurring of lines between the personal and professional side of such an arrangement. You’re unsure of how things will work out between us, especially if you continue to work as my assistant.” Alexa was bewildered by this man. Everything he said was exactly right! “You of all people know full well that the press would have a field day if they ever learned about us...” she pointed out sternly. “Dante Romano, CEO and famous billionaire is seen shacking up with his assistant… I can see the headlines now.” She shook her head in embarrassment. “I’m so confused, Dante…” her brows furrowed as tears began to fill the corners of her eyes. “I’ve worked far too hard to get where I am now… but… I don’t want to let go of what we have. I don’t think I could bear it…” That was what he wanted to hear. The Mafia Boss reached out and took Alexa’s champagne glass from her, placing both down onto the table beside him. A smile spread wide across his face as he turned his whole body to face her, with both of his hands raising up to cup either side of her face. His thumbs worked to wipe away her stray tears as she looked him in the eyes. “My dear, sweet Alexa. You have nothing to worry about.” he assured her. “I have no intention of letting you go.” Her brows furrowed with her apparent confusion. What did he mean by that? “You’re… refusing my resignation?” she asked him. He shook his head. “Oh bella, (beautiful) It was never about the job. Don’t you see? I wanted you closer to me, to become a part of my life…” Alexa’s eyes widened in disbelief at what she was hearing from the handsome billionaire. “That morning when we met in the elevator, I was captivated by you. I couldn’t stop thinking about you, even throughout the meeting. I couldn’t get you out of my head... so-” “-What? So, you thought you’d make me your new assistant just to sleep with me? Is that it? For a way to get me out of your system?” she snapped, clearly taking what he was telling her the wrong way. He frowned at the ludicrous suggestion. “Of course not.” With her unfortunate history of dealing with rich, arrogant men, Alexa knew she had to be right. Shaking her head, she stood up to separate them from one another, but Dante did the same immediately after. “I know all about rich men like you.... I know how they treat women as if they’re nothing but a good fuck.” “Alexa...” Dante’s voice was deep, almost sounding like a warning. She glared at him, her chest heaving up and down with each of her furious breaths. “Is that all I was to you as well? A good f**k?” she demanded, the tears filling her chocolate eyes and threatening to fall. “I guess that just makes me one of many whores stupid enough to have fallen for you…” Dante tried to get a word in. “That’s not-” “-You know what, don’t! Don't waste your precious time explaining this to someone like me…” She shook her head and turned, headed for the door. “Alexa! Wait!” he demanded sternly. But she continued for the door and he quickly charged along after her. As Alexa went to open the door his hand slammed against it, preventing her from leaving. He quickly grabbed at her arms and spun her around, slamming her back against the wooden door now behind her. “Will you just listen to me!” he demanded harshly, between clenched teeth. She breathed heavily as he boxed her in with both arms, staring the beautiful woman down with the gaze of a powerful predator. This woman… the things she did to him… She was awakening a part of him that had long since been dormant, hidden away in the deepest, darkest pits of himself. “I never once thought of you in that way, Alexa… not once.” he finally whispered, breaking the thickened tension held between them. Blinking, Alexa allowed several tears to roll down either of her cheeks as she remained trapped by his heated gaze. “Tonight, I may have to lose my personal assistant…” he announced solemnly, lowering his gaze for a moment before lifting it back up to meet her eyes. “But I’ll be damned if I have to lose you as well.” Alexa couldn’t hold herself back any longer. He wanted her! And that’s all she needed to hear! Lunging at him, she crashed her red lips hard against his, wrapping both her arms around the back of his neck as they deepened their kiss. Dante too used both his hands to cup the sides of her delicate face, tangling his fingers in her long blonde locks as the kiss went progressed. Lost in such overpowering emotions, Alexa could feel Dante’s inner passion surfacing as their tongues tangled between breathy pants and needy moans. The pair worked to remove one another’s clothing and within mere moments, they were down to their undergarments and getting onto the bed.
