SHADOW HEIRS: THE LAST KINGDOM
Part 3 – The Forest of Forgotten Souls
Three days passed as Kael, Lady Seraphine, and the royal knights journeyed across the untamed lands of Asteria. They passed abandoned villages, ruined watchtowers, and fields where no crops had grown for years. It was as though darkness itself had poisoned the land.
At sunset on the fourth day, they reached the edge of the Forest of Forgotten Souls.
Ancient trees rose high into the sky, their twisted branches obscuring the fading light. A cold mist drifted across the ground, and an unsettling silence hung in the air.
One of the knights tightened his grip on his sword.
"No one enters this forest willingly," he said. "It is said the spirits of fallen warriors wander here forever."
Lady Seraphine nodded. "It is the only path to the Lost Kingdom."
As they ventured deeper into the forest, strange whispers echoed between the trees.
Turn back...
The heir will fail...
Kael tried to ignore the voices, but they seemed to know his deepest fears.
"You are not worthy."
"You cannot save anyone."
Suddenly, the mist thickened. The group was separated.
"Seraphine!" Kael shouted.
There was no answer.
He wandered alone until he reached a moonlit clearing. At its center stood a tall figure clad in silver armor, carrying a magnificent sword.
"I have been waiting for you," the warrior said.
"Who are you?" Kael asked.
"I am Sir Orion, the last captain of your father's royal guard."
Kael's eyes widened.
"But... you're dead."
"My body is gone," Orion replied calmly. "Only my spirit remains. I swore to protect the royal bloodline, even after death."
Without warning, Orion drew his sword.
"If you wish to become king, prove that your courage is greater than your fear."
The two clashed in a fierce duel. Kael fought with determination, but Orion's skill far surpassed his own. Again and again, Kael was driven to the ground.
Finally, exhausted, Kael lowered his glowing blade.
"I do not want power for myself," he said. "I only want to protect those who cannot protect themselves."
For the first time, Orion smiled.
"Then you have already taken your first step toward becoming a true king."
He placed his hand on Kael's shoulder.
Golden light spread through the clearing as ancient runes appeared on Kael's sword.
"This blade shall now be known as Dawn bringer. It will grow stronger as your heart grows stronger."
The forest trembled.
A terrifying roar echoed through the trees.
From the darkness emerged a gigantic shadow beast with glowing crimson eyes and claws as long as swords.
Lady Seraphine and the knights rushed into the clearing.
"Kael!" she cried.
The monster charged.
Kael gripped Dawn bringer with both hands, its golden light blazing brighter than ever.
His first true battle had begun.
End of Part 3.The story continues in Part 4 – The Beast of the Shadow Forest, where Kael faces the giant shadow beast and discovers a mysterious new companion.
