Chapter 17: A New MartinThe members of the House of Don arrived at the House of Ayran with platters of meats, sausages, cheeses, and baked brool breads and pastries. To Lorenz, the latter were the apple and yeast bread concoctions called apfel kucken, apfel strudel, and apple pies of his German forbearers and deserts of his country. He was adamant that it was not a festive occasion unless they were there. Ayran had piled platters of smoked fish from Ishner, fresh crackers piled with vegetables (both raw and cooked), and pitchers and pitchers of Rurhran's finest brews. Ayran did not have the House members that had repopulated Don after the Maca's return, but Jolene compensated by having the Directors from the mines with their families and the head Keepers and their families attend.
