The hospital room was sterile and cold—an impersonal blend of white, beige, and light blue. Machines beeped steadily beside the bed, their rhythm grating on Jacin’s already frayed nerves. He wanted to be anywhere but here. Still, he understood why he had to stay. The accident had torn through him—literally and figuratively.
Road rash covered the right side of his body, a harsh souvenir of the way he had skidded across the gravel. He’d landed hard on the back of his head, fracturing his skull, which explained the throbbing pain and the stitches that now crisscrossed his scalp. They’d shaved off his curls.
