Chapter 2

722 Words
Kate stayed in the hospital for three days. Every day, Lucy found a different excuse to call Barry away from her bedside. Each time, Kate did not stop him. No matter what, he would leave anyway. She simply saw no point in trying. On the day Kate was discharged, she did not tell anyone. She went through the procedures alone, took a taxi, and returned to the home where she had lived for four years. The living room was empty. She had no energy to think and only wanted to lie down. In the next second, Barry rushed in, his forehead covered in sweat. "Kate, why did you leave the hospital by yourself? I went to find you, but the nurse said you'd left. You're still in confinement—what if you catch a cold? Why didn't you call me to pick you up?" He reached out to touch her forehead. Worry was written all over his face. In the past, every time after she gave birth, Barry would personally cook her confinement meals, busy himself with everything, and even hire four nannies to take care of her. Those nannies used to say that among all the wealthy families they had worked for, it was rare to find a husband who cared so much for his wife. Once, she had only felt moved. Now, she only felt disgusted. "Barry, do you really care?" The man's hand froze in mid-air. "What do you mean?" Kate sneered. Just as she was about to speak, the bedroom door opened. Lucy stood at the doorway, wearing Kate's favorite silk pajamas, her hair messy, holding Herry in her arms. Kate looked past her at the slightly disheveled bed sheets inside the bedroom and smiled bitterly. Four years. Had everything in this home that belonged to her been taken over by this woman? Lucy spoke first with a gentle smile, "Kate, don't misunderstand. Herry is sick and having nightmares, crying for Barry. I brought him here to make it easier. I didn't bring any luggage in a hurry, so I borrowed your pajamas. As for sleeping in your room... it's just to take care of Herry more easily. It's all for the child." Kate's heart turned cold. Was it really for the child, or for a private life with Lucy? She could hear the pride in Lucy's tone. She looked at Herry. The child lay weakly on Lucy's shoulder, his little face pale, his eyes half-closed. Kate blurted out, her voice tight with tension. She did not realize, "How is Herry? Did his fever break? Did you take him to the hospital..." Lucy cut her off sharply. "Herry has me, his real mother, taking care of him. He'll be fine." Real mother. Those words pricked her heart like fine needles, sending a dull, throbbing pain through her chest. She took a deep breath and pushed all her emotions back into her eyes. She could not let them notice anything was wrong. Three other children were still missing. She had to endure. Barry thought she was thinking about her "dead" babies and comforted her softly, "I buried the children properly. I didn't let you go because I was afraid you'd be sad. You're still in confinement; you need to recover. We'll have more... later." Every time in the past, he had comforted her like this, holding her in his warm embrace when she was in pain. She used to feel grateful, thinking she still had a husband who loved her, that Barry had never blamed her. Now, it all felt bitterly ironic. Lucy cut in from the side, her tone pitying but her eyes mocking, "Yes, Kate, don't be too sad. Even if you're unlucky now, you might still get a chance later." Unlucky. Kate suddenly looked up and stared at her coldly. "You're right. I'm not as lucky as you, to still keep a posthumous child." Lucy's face changed slightly. Kate narrowed her eyes, "Come to think of it, I haven't really celebrated Herry's birthday. I didn't pay enough attention before. I don't even know when the child's birthday is." She looked at Lucy, the corner of her mouth curving into a smile, "When is Herry's birthday? I'll remember it from now on and prepare a gift for him." The air froze instantly. Lucy and Barry both paled.
