Chapter 4

799 Words
Kate waited outside the ward all night. At dawn, the door opened. Barry walked out and froze when he saw her pale face and the dried blood on her forehead. "You waited all night? Why didn't you have someone treat your wound first?" Kate said nothing. After a long while, he sighed. "Herry is awake now. He's fine. You should go back." Kate stared at him, her voice hoarse. "Barry, do you really think I did it?" Barry frowned, his voice carrying a trace of impatience. "If not you, then who? Lucy? She's Herry's real mother." Kate's nails dug into her palms. The pain kept her clear-headed. Knowing her child was safe was enough. Nothing else mattered. Barry stood there, watching her thin back disappear down the hallway. An indescribable feeling welled up in his chest. Lucy's call came from the ward. Barry snapped back to his senses and turned inside. Three days later, Kate received a message from Barry: [Herry is out of the hospital and stable. Come see him.] She hurried to the villa where Lucy was staying. The living room was empty. Kate had just climbed the stairs when Lucy stepped out of the bedroom and stood in her way, twirling a phone in her hand. It was Barry's. Kate stepped back. "You sent the message?" Lucy stood up and walked slowly toward Kate, her eyes full of mockery. "I did." "Barry has been sleeping with me these past few nights. It was easy to get his phone." Kate felt not heartache, but disgust at the words. "You two are disgusting." Lucy laughed indifferently. "Kate, can't you see your place? Barry chased you back then only to make me jealous and come back to him. If I hadn't married his brother back then, do you think you would've ever gotten him?" "If I remember correctly, you even had to finish your wedding ceremony alone." Kate's pupils shrank sharply. That memory had always been her deepest pain. On the eve of the wedding, Barry said he had an emergency business trip abroad and promised he would return on the wedding day. But he never showed. She walked down the red carpet alone, held the wedding alone, and forced a smile through the guests' strange stares. Later, he knelt and apologized, took her traveling for a month to redo the wedding, and she convinced herself to forgive him. Lucy snorted. "The 'emergency' Barry told you about was coming to comfort me." "I fought with his brother and ran away. Barry flew to me overnight. Even on your wedding day, when I told him to stay, he agreed without hesitation." "Wedding? Nothing is more important than me." Kate clenched her fists tight. Lucy's voice grew sharper. She leaned in and whispered deliberately, "You can't even hold onto a man. No wonder you can't keep your children..." That last line broke Kate's last bit of self-control. In the next second, she raised her hand and slapped hard toward Lucy's face. Barry appeared suddenly from behind. He grabbed Kate's raised wrist and threw her away roughly. He stood in front of Lucy. "Kate! Have you lost your mind? You even came here to cause trouble?!" Kate stumbled to steady herself. Before she could speak, a small figure rushed over and slammed into her. "Bad woman! Don't hurt my mom!" Herry threw himself at her with all his strength. Kate lost her footing and fell backward. She tumbled down the stairs step by step. Violent shocks hit her back. Kate felt as if her whole body was exploding in pain. Her last thought was seeing Barry rush downstairs with a tense face. When she woke up, she was already in the hospital. Barry sat by the bed. His expression relaxed when she opened her eyes. "Herry didn't mean it. Don't be angry at him. I brought him here to apologize." With that, he gestured to Herry standing at the door. Herry inched slowly to the bed, looked at Kate timidly. "Auntie, I'm sorry..." Kate looked at him, thinking of "bad woman" on the stairs and how he'd thrown himself at her. Her eyes stung. Her own child had hurt her to protect another woman. But one apology melted her heart completely. She reached out instinctively, wanting to touch his face. But Herry jerked back sharply, avoiding her hand, his eyes wary. Kate's hand froze in mid-air, then dropped in disappointment. "There's a banquet tonight. Lucy asked me to bring you along. She wants to apologize." Kate was about to refuse. "I..." "Herry will be there too," he cut her off, picking Herry up. "You should come. It'll be good to have someone else watch him, in case something happens again." Kate looked at the child hiding in Barry's arms and finally nodded.
