Audrey
“Why did you do that to me?” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
“What?” Enoch stopped in his tracks, and he glanced at me briefly.
I also looked up at him. My eyes were still red from crying, but he didn't seem to care about that.
There were lipstick stains all over his shirt, his hair was messed up, hickey were also all over his neck, and he smelled disgustingly of a woman's perfume and s*x.
He hadn't even bothered covering his sins. He hadn't bothered to pretend like he hadn't just had s*x with another woman while I watched.
“Why did you do that to me?” I repeated. “ You had s*x with another woman, Enoch.”
“So?”
“What?” I was shocked. I hadn't expected that reply from him, and a new round of tears slid down my face; my hands were trembling so bad, and I felt like fainting.
I stood up from my seat, my legs were still weak and shaky as I advanced towards him.
“I'm pregnant with your child, Enoch.”
“Why are you acting like this is new to you? Look, Audrey, I already made it clear this marriage was fake. I never wanted you, and I never will.”
“Really? Are you saying that to me now? I'm carrying your baby.” My voice was shaky as sobs shook me.
“I'm trying to be nice here. If it weren't for this baby you forced on me, I would have divorced you months ago.” He shouted, his big frame looming over me, and I moved back in fear.
Divorce? Forced the baby on him?
“Enoch?” I whispered.
For the longest minute of my life, he looked at me in utter hatred as if I had done something bad to him. As if I had put him in bondage with his marriage to me and not the other way round.
“Enoch?” I whispered again and pressed my lips together as screams threatened to burst from my lungs. I was hurting; why can't he see that?
He just walked away.
What did I ever do wrong?
****
The next day. I woke up with just a note on the nightstand. He was gone and he hadn't slept in the bed with me like he had started doing after he found out I was pregnant three months ago.
It reads, COME TO THE WINDSOR FAMILY MANSION. WE ARE HAVING LUNCH.
My lips shook once again. It hurts to realize my situation was getting more real. I have gone so deep in my marriage that I don't think I can ever come out of it, at least not easily. Enoch has me captured between his. It would be for me to go and pretend everything is normal in front of his not so friendly family members again.
He wanted to divorce me?
I had also planned that six months ago, when I had insisted I couldn't go on with any false hope of him ever loving me, but my dad's words continuously hammered in my head.
“Audrey, we need the money. Your marriage has been beneficial to my company, my dear. Just hang on for a few more years, then you will be free to divorce him. Just a few more years.”
And I had complied and put my own happiness on hold.
I packed my car and stared at the gigantic old money mansion in front of me. The Windsor's make the incredibly beautiful mansion have a cold edge to it. I didn't step out immediately. I made sure to add extra makeup under my eyes, because they looked puffy from crying myself to sleep the previous night. Enoch wouldn't want me to embarrass him in front of his family members by looking unkempt. I don't know why I cared, but I did anyway. They are all like snakes and wouldn't stop haunting me with words.
When I eventually entered the house and walked straight to the dinner table. Everyone was already present and had started lunch without me. They all paused to stare at me, and my hand dropped on my tummy nervously.
I couldn't meet none of their eyes, I bet they were all looking at me in disdain as they always have.
“Why are you late?” The unforgettable cold voice of Mrs Windsor made me look up slowly.
“I… I woke up late. I'm sorry.”
“Of course. You are practically jobless.” She eyed me up and down before saying,
“Carrying a child isn't that hard. It's all you do all day.” She scoffed, and I heard laughter go round from the people seated at the table.
I looked at Enoch's direction, hoping he would have the decency to defend me at least, but he said nothing as the jeers went on. I know I'm pathetic, I can't even defend myself in front of these people. I couldn't. It would mean a bye bye to the deal my dad made with them.
“Being late is not a big deal. Why are you all making a fuss about it?" A deep masculine voice spoke.
I guess someone did defend me, but it wasn't my husband. It was Sebastian. The eldest brother, also known as the black sheep of the family.
I was surprised he spoke. I never knew he knew I existed till now. The few times I had seen him for the past two years, he never acknowledged my presence.
I looked up at him and our eyes locked for a minute. His dark eyes stared unreadably at me.
I might have had a crush on him before I married Enoch. And till now I still do. He was the perfect man, handsome and dashing, a good 6 '5, dark and dangerous, just like I always dreamed my man to be. But I had ended up with Enoch, the good Mama's boy and a great asshole husband.
Sebastian might be the black sheep, but he surely commands the room, because everyone kept silent immediately.
Sebastian dropped his fork and pushed back his chair. He stood up and walked away. I caught a whiff of his perfume, surprisingly not making me nauseous like Enoch's always does.
“You know she's pregnant, Mom. Cut her some slack.” Enoch eventually said, he smiled and walked up to me.
To my surprise, and also to everyone around the table. He bent and placed a kiss on my tummy. He looked up at me before giving me a quick kiss on my cheeks, also.
“What are you doing?” I whispered to him, but he ignored me.
“Excuse us, please.”
He dragged me into an empty room, shutting the door with a thud.
“Why won't you stop embarrassing me in front of my family?”
“I didn't do anything, Enoch.”
“Didn't I tell you to always come early to anything organized by my Mom?”
“She's your mom, not mine. Look, I'm too tired for this.” I turned to walk away, but he held me back.
“The hell, Audrey?” he frowned.
“Is this what you are yapping to me about. You cheated on me and talked s**t to me yesterday, and all you could say about all that is telling me not to embarrass you?” I said, I could feel the tears clouding again, but I don't want to ruin my makeup.
“The baby. You and I know you took advantage of the fact that I was drunk that night. I don't love you. I love someone else. And you can't make me because of your pregnancy.”
I couldn't say a word, new rounds of tears finally dropping from under my lashes. Enoch is a chameleon. He changes colors so fast. He fakes our relationship to the world, but he is the worst ever.
“There's a baby showe
r being held tonight for the baby. Mom has finally decided to accept you. Don't be late.” He walked away.
My world crumbled at my feet, and I'm left to pick up its shambles.
