CHAPTER 4 – The Lesson of Power

444 Words
The training hall smelled like stone and lightning. Lila stood among thirty other students, her pulse loud in her ears as instructors moved through the room like shadows. Cracks of energy sparked in the air as students practiced—fire flaring, wind slicing, light bending at their fingertips. Lila’s palms were damp. She had no idea what she was doing. “Focus,” the instructor barked. “Power responds to intent. Control your breath or your magic will consume you.” Easy for them to say. Lila closed her eyes, trying to breathe like she’d been taught. The mark on her wrist tingled—warm, restless, almost alive. A whisper brushed her thoughts, soft but insistent. Let go. Her eyes snapped open. Energy surged from her hands, silver and wild, slamming into the far wall. Stone cracked. Students shouted and leapt back. The hall went silent. The instructor stared at the shattered wall, then at Lila. “Enough,” he said sharply. “Everhart, step aside.” Heat burned behind her eyes—not embarrassment, but anger. She hadn’t meant to do that. She hadn’t even tried. Slow applause echoed from the back of the hall. Raven leaned against a pillar, arms crossed, dark eyes unreadable. “Impressive,” he said. “For someone with no control.” Lila’s jaw tightened. “I didn’t ask for your opinion.” “You don’t have to,” he replied calmly. “Your power announces itself.” He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “That kind of energy attracts the Dark Court.” Her heart skipped. “The what?” Before he could answer, a horn sounded—low and ominous. The instructors froze. “That’s not a drill,” one whispered. “Shield the students.” Windows rattled. The air grew heavy, pressing down on Lila’s chest. From the far end of the hall, shadows seeped across the floor like spilled ink. Something was coming. Raven moved instantly, positioning himself in front of her without hesitation. “Stay behind me,” he said. Lila stared at his back. “I thought you said you wouldn’t protect me.” His voice was steady. “I lied.” The shadows surged. Lila’s mark flared, blazing silver. Power rushed through her veins—not chaotic this time, but sharp, focused. Raven glanced back, startled. “You can control it,” he murmured. She met his gaze, fear and determination colliding in her chest. “I think… it’s controlling me.” The shadows recoiled, as if afraid. And in that moment, Lila understood something terrifying: This power wasn’t just rare. It was royal. And someone had come to claim it.
