Melanie and Sierra held onto Valentina’s hands. Valentina brought us to an alley by the mall in Missouri where my dumb brother was for some reason. Valentina’s phone went off. She frowned and told us, “I need to get back. Call when you guys need to get out of here.” She shimmered away. Sierra snorted, “I really hope that was an epic emergency because people are going to die in there and we are GOING to have to leave in a hurry. Like probably one of the biggest hurries we’ve ever done.” I looked at the mall entrance. I told her, “Go pick up one of our cars in the garage. Be waiting out in the alley. If I don’t make it to you in twenty minutes. Leave.” Sierra frowned, “Mel….” I told her, “Si, if I’m not out in twenty minutes you get out of here. Call Phil and tell him everything. He’ll protect you.” Sierra frowned, “Fine, but ONLY if you promise to call your Xander if things go south.” I nodded, “I’ll call him. His brother is here. Alpha Theo would never forgive himself if he didn’t know who I was to his brother before his brother decides what to do about me.” Sierra scoffed then ran off the garage. We were lucky and unlucky they were in Missouri. We had a few buildings and cars around states that were heavy in ring traffic. Missouri was the hot bed. We had a few places here. I closed my eyes and centered myself.
I walked in through the back and stuck to the shadows. I found a corner. Thank god this was a supernatural mall. No one was paying attention to me. I’m sure humans would freak out about a masked figure running around the mall. Not to mention one with a lot of weapons. Supernatural’s didn’t really bat an eye. I spotted Alpha Theo Conners first. He looked a lot like EJ. I suppose in a way Xander did too….I could just them apart. They had subtle differences. Alpha Theo was with Jason. Behind him were Beta Finn and Alpha Jayden. Oh good. They stayed in a group. Why don’t they just wear highlighter neon colors with a sign that says we aren’t from here? Please shoot us because we ventured into Missouri and gave you this golden opportunity. Yup...why not? Alpha Theo shifted and I nearly screamed in frustration when my brother came into full view. Jason was wearing a bright colored shirt. That jerk! COME ON! A bright green shirt. Seriously?! Did he WANT to get shot? I shoved my annoyance down. I needed to focus.
I began to survey the area. My heart dropped. There were nine people eyeing their group. Nine assassins for four people? They must suck at their jobs. I noticed Alpha Jayden had clearly spotted several of them. Alpha Theo was eyeing the other half subtly. Jason had his eyes on two. Beta Finn was….jumping around the group as if he was anticipating a fight. No freaking way! They did not come here as bait. I was going to KICK Dalton and Dakota’s ass to kingdom come! I was going to verbally rip them apart and punch them both in the face….somehow. It was going to happen. I could request a meeting with them as the resistance representative and punch them in the face. Then I would have Valentina shimmer us away. Yes. That was a solid plan. I liked that plan. One thing was for sure I was punching them in their stupid faces. What the heck was anyone thinking? That EJ and Xander were away so they could make foolish plans? Alpha Theo should NOT be here. Alpha Jayden and Beta Finn….should one hundred thousand percent not be here. My brother should beyond not be here. Honest to god….was a single person capable of using their brains? What the hell happened in Red Run that everyone just checked out their mental capacity at the border now? Sending your Beta into a trap.
Fury lit through me. ANOTHER trap. They’d already sent them into a hunting ring. Which is the dumbest move I think they’ve made. Jason had a wolf. Why would you send a wolf? There was no logic in that whatsoever. The Kyle’s needed to get their heads in the game. Or I would smack some sense into them. My eyes narrowed on a woman walking towards the group. She was all alone and walking directly towards them. They were focused on the nine guys. They weren’t paying attention to her. I moved towards the railing overlooking the first floor. She pulled out a gun. I was too far away. I screamed at the people around me, “MOVE! GET OUT OF THE WAY!” People jumped back as I pushed a few others out of my way. I screamed, “JASON! JASON GET DOWN!” A shot was fired. I screamed, “JASON!” I made it to the edge and fired, taking out the girl with one shot. I aimed at three others. I turned to see if anyone was hurt. My heart stopped. All I could see was the edge of Jason's pants. He was down behind a column. I screamed, “NO!” I jumped the railing. As soon as I landed, I ran as fast as I could over to him. Alpha Jayden was using his magic to take out other shooters. Alpha Theo was fighting too. I reached Jason. Beta Finn had a bullet graze on his arm. Jason hit his head on a pillar but was fine otherwise. I ripped out some combat gauze from my pants pocket, and put it on Finn’s arm.
I turned to leave. Jason said, “Wait...you saved us.” I turned, “Keep your head down Beta Jason. Get the hell out of here. You all don’t belong in Missouri. Stay the HELL out of here. You are CLEARLY not welcome.” Jason snorted, “You keep calling me that.” I snorted, “It’s your name and title. I don’t know what else I’d call you.” I turned and took out another shooter before he could answer. I sighed when I saw Xander’s brother. Alpha Theo didn’t see a girl coming up behind him. I ran and tackled him to the ground. I shot her and kept running.
Alpha Theo and Alpha Jayden were chasing me. I turned and yelled, “Get Beta Finn and Beta Jason out of here now!” I ran outside and jumped through the sunroof of the car Sierra picked. Naturally it was a sports car. I screamed, “GO!” I rubbed my side. Jumping through sunroofs… was efficient but painful. She took off. Alpha Jayden seemed frustrated about something. It was like he tried to pop in the car and couldn't. I shook myself. That didn’t make sense. He could pop to me if he wanted to. It’s why I thought they didn't really want to find us. They never popped to us. He popped away with Alpha Theo. I buckled into the seat. Sierra was doing evasive maneuvers just in case. I grabbed the tablet on the console. It already had the security feed up so Sierra wasn’t blind to the situation. Alpha Theo and Alpha Jayden had popped Beta Finn and Jason out. I sighed in relief. I called Valentina. She didn’t answer. I called her three more times. I gave up and called Virgil. He didn't answer either. I closed my eyes.
Sierra asked, “What’s the problem? We can just go to our safe place here.” I snorted, “Your dad will call you. They don’t think we are in the resistance, but I screamed Jason’s name. We need to be in our hotel. He’ll probably facetime you.” Sierra winced, “You’re right. Our phones are back at the hotel.” I ran through options. There was only one. I told her, “I’ll call Xander from my burner.” Sierra gaped, “Are you serious? No...you have to do it from mine. He might recognize the number of yours. You have called him before, and he leaves you messages. A lot.” I ripped my mask off and found a change of clothes in the back. I pointed to a parking garage, “Pull in there.” She did and we both changed quickly. Sierra frowned, “We could call Phil.” I frowned, “His Beta brain would not be able to handle any more no questions asked.” Sierra cringed. I took my phone out and took a deep breath. I tried Valentina and Virgil again. What the HELL was going on? Sierra cursed, “I swear to f*****g god….they better be having the biggest emergency of ALL time.” I actually agreed. I took another calming breath. Xander would do this for me. He would do a no questions asked.
I called his burner phone from Sierra’s. He immediately answered thinking it was his uncle. I quickly told him it wasn’t his uncle. I told him I needed his help, but he couldn’t ask questions. He immediately agreed. Freya purred in my head. She’d been oddly silent. She linked me, “It’s not odd. Not being around Xander and Oden means I need to sleep more.” Good to know. I told him I needed him to pop us back to the hotel. I texted him the address. He immediately asked what the hell we were doing in Missouri. Sierra quickly pointed out he’d already agreed to no questions. She drove as quickly as she could to our safe place. Xander said he’d be there. He hung up. I bit my lip. Sierra sighed, “We don’t have a choice.” I whispered, “I know. All our holoports in this state go to Nashville not Louisiana. This is just going to be SUCH a good day. Don’t you feel it? What the HELL were they thinking? Why would they come to Missouri?” Sierra snorted, “They weren’t thinking. Obviously. That was a horrible plan. Princess Luna Haley Conners would KICK their asses for getting distracted and not watching the women as well.” I snorted, “True. My mom would’ve tanned Jason’s hide for that.” Tears pricked my eyes. Sierra put her hand on my thigh. We rounded the corner of our place. Xander was standing outside.
Sierra put the garage up and he followed us in. We jumped out of the car. Xander’s eyes were wide. He gaped, “What the hell? This is like….super nice on the inside. It looks abandoned from the outside.” Sierra snorted, “It’s intentional. We need to go.” Xander grabbed us both and popped us back to our hotel. Sierra’s phone was ringing. She jumped on the bed. I pushed Xander into the bathroom. I chucked my pants off and grabbed the hotel robe. Then I grabbed a towel and put my hair in it. Xander watched me curiously. Sierra yelled, “Mel...my dad said he needs to talk to you.” I poked my head out of the bathroom, “What in the world could you actually have to say to me Jean? Did someone attack while I was gone and get away with all your things while you hid in the office? I told you that could happen if you hid in the office. I don’t feel sorry for you. I need to finish packing so we can leave and head to your s**t hole pack.” Jean hissed, “I just needed to see you.” I snorted, “Whatever” I slammed the bathroom door. I heard Sierra leaving the room. Xander raised an eyebrow, but he said nothing until the adjoining door shut.
Xander spoke, “That...is an interesting way to talk to your Beta.” I snorted, “Jean is not my Beta. He doesn’t even deserve the title.” Xander frowned, “They thought you were exactly where you were. Didn’t they? That’s why you needed me….so they didn’t suspect you.” I bit my lip, “I can’t answer that right now.” Xander rubbed his thumb on my cheek, “When can you?” I whispered, “I don’t know.” Xander laughed, “You know...I can probably figure it out when I get home.” I looked down, “I’m sure you will.” He pulled at the tie on the robe. He cupped my face and kissed me as the robe fell. He picked me up and put me on the counter. He broke apart from my lips and whispered, “I missed you so much Lovebug.” He slid my underwear off and dropped to his knees. He pulled me to the edge of the counter and blew a breath on my c**t. I shivered in anticipation. I gripped the edges of the counter the second his tongue hit me. I moaned. I could practically feel him smirking. Freya purred.
I grabbed his hair and screamed, “XANDER!” It didn’t even take him more than a few minutes. He snapped his fingers. He was naked. I gulped. I ran my hands down his abs. He really was photoshopped. He grabbed my hair and kissed me roughly. I loved it. He lined us up and slammed into me. His mouth on mine drowned out my screams. I held onto him as he gripped my hips and pounded into me. He growled, “MINE!” I threw my head back, “Yours!” He gripped my hips pretty hard, but all I could think was I wanted him to hold me tighter. He began to growl, “MINE!” With each thrust. I whimpered as another orgasm ripped through me. Xander groaned and reached his own release. We held onto each other breathing hard. I whispered, “Did I mess up your mission?” Xander kissed me lightly, “No, Lovebug. I’m meeting someone for drinks tonight. I’ll probably take a nap when I get back. Something you should do too. You need more sleep than me.” Not normally I didn’t. I got by on little to no sleep. He put his forehead on mine still inside me. He whispered, “It was hard enough to leave you the first time. I don’t know if I can do it again.” I played with his hair and told him, “You can do anything. I know you can.” He chuckled. Sierra knocked on the door, “Uhhh we really need to get moving. We are already packed so…..”
Xander sighed and pulled out of me. He snapped me into yoga pants and a tight t-shirt. He’d snapped himself into shorts and a cutoff shirt. I admired his arms. He kissed my cheek, “Your friend won’t get her wish if you keep looking at me like that.” I blushed. He laughed and opened the door. We walked out. Sierra raised an eyebrow, “He’s doing fairly good at not asking questions.” Xander snorted, “You have no idea. Your lack of smells is odd to me.” Oh s**t. I flushed. Sierra smiled, “That’s why you know what you’re agreeing to before you agree Alpha boy.” Xander raised an eyebrow, “I’ll do anything my lovebug asks me to do.” He kissed my forehead. His phone rang. He sighed. I laughed, “It’s actually your Uncle this time...right?” He nodded, “I need to get moving. You two stay out of trouble. Ok?” I smiled, “Trouble? Us? Was but a mere inconvenience.” Xander snorted, “Ok then. Call me or Phil if you need anything.” I kissed him quickly and whispered, “I knew you’d come.” Xander whispered, “Always.” He squeezed my hand and popped away. I sighed and threw myself on the bed. I just wanted to be with him.
Sierra said, “Let’s talk in the car.” I nodded. We both walked to our car in silence. Her phone rang again. She answered, “Hi mom. We just got in the car. We will be back soon. Love you. Bye.” I sighed, “Nine hour drive here we come.” Sierra sighed, “Nope….we have a plane to catch.” I raised an eyebrow, “What?” Sierra shrugged, “My dad and the Alpha insisted.” I snorted, “Great. I’m sure that’s good.” I sighed. We made it to the airport, and barely made our flight. I linked Sierra, “One of Buck’s warriors is in the back.” Sierra snorted and turned around. She glared at the warrior. She linked, “Why did they have this ready to go? Missouri was spur of the moment because the guys were there. It wasn’t pre-planned.” I sighed, “I don’t know.”
I thought about it for several minutes then it clicked for me. I linked back, “Oh my god. The resistance is too busy to take our calls….Jason was in Missouri….what if the ring is going after Everly….or Kai?” The plane took off. Three tortuous hours. Dalton and Dakota were getting their asses kicked by me. Somehow….someway. If my sister in law or nephew were hurt….They’d already put Jason’s life on the line. They’d better be keeping a close eye on Everly and Kai. I checked my phone a dozen times. Sierra got a text when she got on the Wi-Fi. I read it over her shoulder. The ring was going for Kai. The resistance had been trying to find him. He wasn’t in Red Run. A string of curse words ran through my head aimed at the Kyle’s. They were being VERY cavalier with my remaining living family members. I should send Aunt Stephanie up to meet them. Maybe they COULD get her killed. That would be helpful. She was awful.
I linked Sierra, “The warrior is here to make sure we cooperate, and go home.” Sierra winced, “You’re not going home...are you?” I shook my head, “No. I’m going to find Kai.” Sierra frowned, “How?” I smiled and checked my phone. I’d sent Kai a gift a few years back. A necklace with a wolf on it. It had his exact location. I’d told him it was our secret. He’d left a note where I’d told him to on the border with Red Run and Alpha Raven’s territory. He’d agreed to keep it our secret and always wear the necklace. I smiled. I had Kai’s location. I could get to him. The plane landed. I grabbed a hoodie of Xander’s. I threw it on, and put my hair in a ponytail. I grabbed some sunglasses and pulled up the hood. As soon as the seatbelt sign went off I was up and three seats in front of mine. Sierra linked, “Be careful.” I linked, “Don’t let them take you in. I had Hendrick leave a car here just in case. You all say I’m paranoid but crap like this makes it practical. It’s across the street on the first level right when you get out. The code to get in the door is 4-5-6-3-5.” Sierra linked, “Stay safe Mel…..they will know it was you that saved him.” I linked back, “I know. I’m not going as the resistance. I’m going as his Aunt.” Sierra linked, “They will hurt you for that….badly.” I linked, “I know that too.” I did. I just didn’t care. Kai was a little boy. He was not a game piece for them.
Sierra linked, “If they ask how you knew?” I linked back, “The plane tickets and the men here worried me. I had to check on them.” Sierra sighed, “They probably won’t ask questions.” I snorted, “That would require them to know their jobs...so no. They probably will not.” I kept my head down and walked with a couple acting like we were family. I linked Sierra, “Twenty pack members throughout the airport. Take the walking escalators, stick with a family group. When you hit baggage claim...run. You are faster than them by leaps and bounds. If the humans say something, tell them an ex is harassing you. Even point to one of them. The security guards will stop them, and you can get out to the car. Or if you’d REALLY want to freak them out….say one of them is armed. Buck is here….he is definitely armed. He deserved an ass kicking by a human.” Sierra snickered, “I just might.”
I walked out of the airport, and got to holoport. It took me to my place. I quickly went to the garage and picked out a fast Subaru. I changed the license plates and took off. I pulled up the GPS on Kai. Hendrick called me, “Mel...where are you?” He wouldn’t have said that if he was alone. He would know exactly what I was doing. I told him, “I’m going to check on my nephew and sister in law. There was a heavy pack presence at the airport. The only time they’ve had that on me is when something happened.” I heard a snarl, “You get back here! That’s an order.” I snorted, “Edward….I don’t give a s**t about your orders. Did something happen to my brother, sister in law, or nephew?” He was silent. I said, “If anything happens to them...I’ll find a way to tell Red Run you let their Beta’s family get hurt.” Alpha Edward snarled, “Don’t you da…” I hung up before he could finish.
I hit the steering wheel, “HE IS SUCH AN ASS!” He was the worst excuse for an Alpha. Caine called next. I asked, “Did Sierra make it home?” Caine snorted, “She just did. Micah has been camped out all day.” I winced, “Oh good.” Caine was quiet then said, “Anything you want to share?” That I’d have to use my spray so he couldn’t smell Xander all over me. That wasn’t really something I was going to share with Caine just yet. I told him, “I don’t know why Micah is there. We don’t have a meeting. Something could’ve happened while I was unreachable. I did give them information on a drug ring to bust. Maybe he needs more information or something. He could just want to tell me how it went.” Caine sighed, “My dad’s pretty mad.” I snorted, “I don’t care. Kai’s my nephew. He’s just a kid. He’s innocent.” Caine told me, “There we agree. We were trying to find him. He wasn’t in Red Run. We had Virgil and Valentina out.” So that’s where they were. I told him, “That’s where I’d rather them be.” Caine snorted, “And how did you and Si get back to Louisiana in time?” I winced, “Ummm a no questions asked favor from a guy we met on vacation. I mean...well...actually...yes...that’s true.” Caine groaned, “Oh good. He won’t want anything back for that. Si reeks of a guy.” I snorted, “I am aware.” Caine laughed, “Good for her.” I told him, “I need to go.” Caine said, “Be safe.”
I looked at my phone. Kai was just outside of Blue Moon. I went through our Holoport holding my breath. I smiled. Paige was just good. I got through with my whole car. I followed the GPS to Kai. They were in a white van. Seriously? Could they be more cliche right now? They were driving further away from Blue Moon driving far too fast. Nothing about them was inconspicuous. I hissed and waited until we got to an abandoned road. I rolled down the window and shot out one tire. They pulled over and I went past them and pulled off the road where they couldn’t see. My car. I used the tree line as cover. A guy yelled out the window, “What do you mean you don’t know what happened? It’s an ABANDONED road. We ran over something and the tire blew. We should’ve stuck to the main roads!” A guy yelled back, “We have kidnapped a kid! You don’t stick to the main roads!” I was almost behind the guy who was trying to change the tire. I inhaled. Rogues. They really should be better aware of their surroundings. I grabbed the tire iron and slammed it into the guy’s Adam's apple. He clutched his neck and stared at me in horror. I pointed my gun at the driver side. I told the dying man, “You really should stay away from people’s nephews. I’ll always come for him.” I heard a thump against the door. Fury lit through me. They’d tied him up. The driver jumped out and I shot him in the head. I didn’t hear other heartbeats beside Kai, but I checked the vehicle anyway.
I tucked my gun away before I opened the back. Kai looked up at me with tears running down his face. I told him, “I’m not going to hurt you. I’m going to untie you, ok?” He nodded. I took the gag off. I started talking, “I’m Melanie…..I mean...I’m your… well...it’s a little complicated...not like technically speaking just...like...well….oh good lord...this is harder than I thought. I’ve written to you though...so...there’s that.” Kai whispered, “I know who you are.” I was stunned. I stared at him, “You do?” I guess that made sense. I’d signed the card with his necklace as Melanie. He nodded. I told him, “I’ll get you back to safety. I just need you to stay inside the van here for another minute while I take care of some things… ok?” Kai nodded.
I jumped out and called Virgil. He answered, “Mel?” I told him, “I need you for a brief moment.” Virgil laughed, “Killing people already? That was a quick transition from vacation.” I snorted, “Some people take their time adjusting. I just jumped back in. You know me.” He shimmered in and set the bodies on fire. He leaned around the truck. He smiled, “Hello Kai.” Kai frowned, “I’ve seen you before. You came to a t-ball game my daddy couldn’t come to. No one could come but mommy.” Virgil nodded, “I did. I keep the bad people away.” Kai nodded, “Ok. thanks then.” I laughed. I hugged Virgil. He raised an eyebrow, “That’s….not a smell I expected to get off of you.” I flushed, “Shut up.” Virgil snorted, “Ohhh the gossip that will be started.” I rolled my eyes, “They won’t smell it when I get back.” Virgil laughed, “I hope you got a whole bottle of your stuff with you cause GIRL, you reek of sugar cookies and sexy things.”
Kai popped his head out of the van, “Alexander smells like sugar cookies.” Virgil gaped, “Really? Would you be referring to Alpha Alexander Conners, little Kai?” Kai nodded, “Yeah! He’s cool! He comes to play with me sometimes.” Virgil nodded, “Does he? How adorable. Can you give the adults just a few more moments?” Kai shrugged, “Sure.” Virgil hit my arm, “You’ve got to be kidding me. You met him! THE XANDER?! YOUR XANDER?!” I nodded, “He sort of showed up.” Virgil nodded, “And bow chick a bow bow! Get it! Get it! So he doesn’t care? About you? I knew it!” I hit his shoulder, “Don’t be crass. He doesn’t...know. We were in the bubble. I’m explaining it when he gets back from a mission.” Virgil snorted, “Then the show moves onto Black Mountain. I dig it.” I looked away, “We will see.” Virgil grabbed my arms. He said, “Melanie McAlister. On a scale of one to ten you are a twenty. If that Alpha hybrid does not see that then he will contend with my fire throwing hands.” I winced, “No...no matter what...Don’t hurt him.” Virgil stared at me, “He will see how lucky he is to have landed you.” He kissed my forehead, “I’ll get rid of their van.”
