I do your job Pt. 1

Melanie sank into Xander’s kiss. I told him he wasn’t Claire’s. He wasn’t. He was mine. For now. I tried to shove that thought from my head. Even if he rejected me….he will always have been mine first. I needed him. I needed him with a desperation I’d never felt. I begged him to go faster once he’d entered me. I needed to feel him….feel us. Freya linked me, “He’s ours. Both of them are.” I ignored her. She knew how I felt about the whole situation. She knew Xander could change his mind. Freya growled, “No he won’t. You are being stubborn.” I linked back, “I was born that way.” Freya snorted, “Don’t I know it. He’s ours and I’m going to prove it.” I asked, “How?” Freya linked back, “You’ll find out.” I decided to ignore her. I just wanted to feel the tingles of Xander touching me. I wanted to just feel. Since I’d left Red Run...the only time I’d let myself feel was when I was dancing. I had those I fought for, those I protected, and my revenge. There really wasn’t much for me. This though...this with Alexander. This was for me and me alone. Well and now Freya. We had each other now. Freya was purring in my head. I was about to ask her what her deal was when I felt an intense connection to Alexander. I didn’t even want to ask. I just basked in and let myself fade off into the light.              I looked around. It was really bright. I put my hand up in front of my face trying to block the blinding light. I called out, “Alexander?” I heard nothing back. Now I was panicking. Where was he? I yelled his name again, “Alexander? Where are you?” I heard a yip behind me. I turned. I could make out the white wolf again. She was shimmering. I sighed, “Where the HELL have you been my whole life? You’re better than dreams I normally get.” The wolf tilted it’s head and then took off. I sighed, “Might as well follow.” I ran behind her. I could actually keep up. Guess I was fast even in my dreams. The further away from the light we went….the more things took shape. We were back in that meadow/forest we’d first met in. She bounded down into the field. There were other wolves here this time. They all bowed as she walked by. Of course they did. She was a legend. I faltered when I saw two of the wolves that were joining us. Tears filled my eyes. They ran over to me. I cried, “Ajax? Apollo?” They were my brother's wolves. They both nodded. I hugged Apollo, “I’m so sorry you lost T.” He shook his head. I held him and cried. I whispered, “I never wanted him to go, Apollo. I would’ve taken that bullet for him.” Apollo bumped his head into me. I sat back. It looked like he was trying to tell me something with his eyes, but I didn’t know what it was.              I turned to Ajax apprehensively. He tackled me to the ground and kissed my face. I snorted, “I thought you’d hate me like Jason.” Both wolves looked pained. The white wolf came over and joined them. I asked, “Are my parents wolves here?” The white wolf shook her head saying no. I sighed, “Will Ajax being here hurt Jason? Jason’s not dead. His wolf shouldn’t be here.” The white wolf shook her head again saying no. I smiled, “Good. I missed you guys.” I played with Ajax and Apollo. Tears were threatening to come, but I couldn’t let them in. Not now. Not when I had this gift. To play with them as I used to. As I always should've been. Apollo had been a part of T. I asked, “Can you bring T here? I miss him.” Clear as day in my head I heard someone answer, “Not now.” It was a whisper. I frowned, “Who said that? Not now...does that mean later?” I heard a laugh. I turned. Oh good. A goddess. I knew she was one because of her glow.              I raised an eyebrow, “I’m not a goddess fan. So if you were looking for a worshiper you’ve come to the wrong place.” The goddess smiled, “Ahh but I’m not yours.” I snorted, “I don’t have one so you couldn’t be mine. Selene is not my goddess. I wouldn’t claim her with a gun to my head.” The goddess smiled and her wings extended. I rolled my eyes, “You’re Charmeine then. What are you doing here? Other than ruining a moment with my brother's wolves. You know the little touch of normalcy I’ve craved for almost seven years. Why wouldn’t a goddess ruin it for me?” I swear to god….the white wolf, Ajax and Apollo chuckled. Charmeine smiled, “I do so like you.” I raised an eyebrow, “Goodie. Now I am complete.” I spat at her sarcastically. Charmeine bit her tongue, “You will meet the moon goddess one day, you know. It was decided I would be the best to speak to you today.” I snorted, “You can tell Selene I pass on meeting her. She most DEFINITELY doesn’t want to meet me. You….I can’t say I’ve met an Angel in the hell called rings or being sold off to hunters. I’d have preferred the Hackura god though.” Charmeine smiled, “But he gets to have all the fun. Everyone likes him.” I told her, “He’s not a do nothing sit on his ass kind of god. Of course people like him.” Charmeine sighed, “He did say he’d be the best choice. You’ll recognize him when you do meet him.” I glared at her, “How would I do that?” Charmeine smiled, “I can’t tell you.” I nodded, “Naturally. Cryptic hints are goddesses' wheelhouses. You play with your children’s lives as if we are meaningless toys to you all. Our misery means nothing to you. You still sit on your hands and do nothing.”              Charmeine said quietly, “I do not do nothing.” I shrugged, “That remains to be seen. Just because I haven’t freed Angels...doesn’t mean they aren’t there.” Charmeine said, “They have been taken but not for long. I send my other Angels after them. We bring them home.” I said, “Then congratulations, you know how to do your job. Would you care to tell the rest of the good for nothing sits on their assess goddesses how to do theirs?” Charmeine smirked, “They don’t tend to listen to me or Aesir. He’s been warning Selene for years….that you’d hate her. Might be decades by now. How old are you again?” I tilted my head, “Hate is a kind word for how I feel about Selene. As for my age, you’re a goddess. Figure it out your dang self.” Charmeine smiled. I continued, “Selene turned her back on me long ago. Why would she care about me now?” Charmeine spoke after several moments, “I do not think you will take it well….you’ll think it’s something that’s it’s not….though….it will not look good in your defense.” I told her, “Selene will be hard pressed to sink lower in my head. I don’t need you to defend me.” Charmeine laughed, “Oh, but she will sink lower in your head.”  The white wolf whined. I sighed and petted her fur. I told the wolf, “I know you are an extension of the goddess. You’re better than her though. You’ve actually been there for me. You brought my brother’s wolves here to play. That’s more for me than Selene has ever done. I’ve even seen you twice. I’ve never met her, and if she was smart….she’d keep it that way.” Charmeine told me, “I’ve seen the things you do. You are very influential.” I snorted, “You came to tell me that? Yeah, I do the job of Goddesses. I stand for those that have been forgotten. Those in the shadows. I have a network that’s fighting against those packs in the shadows. I have members in every single pack. Several that I REALLY can’t wait to throw in people’s faces.” Charmeine laughed, “Alpha Ezra. You want to throw those in his pack in his face.” I nodded, “He’s one of them. He’ll mess up. I won’t out my people until the right time, but he’s dumb. It’s something of a miracle he’s gotten away with everything this long. Not really though is it? He has divine intervention on his side. It’s the only explanation.” Charmeine told me, “That time is coming. Now that you have your mate by your side….things get a little intense.” I sighed, “He’s not going to stay by my side, is he? He’s going to reject me.” The white wolf whimpered while Apollo and Ajax roared in anger. Charmeine shook her head, “So very smart….yet so very blind about yourself. Alexander will not reject you.” I frowned, “He promised Jason.” Ajax growled. Charmeine asked, “Did he?” I frowned, “Jason said he did.” Charmeine repeated, “Did he?” I frowned, “Uh yeah. I’m surprised the writing hasn’t faded from his letter. I’ve read it so many times over the years.” I’d read every letter Jason had sent me over the years’ time and time again. I could practically recite them. I kept them all. Even if they were mean….they were what I had of my family. There were a lot of them too. He wrote to me often. Even Luna Chelsea sent me letters. I rubbed the chain on my neck. She was the one who’d sent me my parents wedding rings. She could’ve got in trouble, but she sent them anyway. Her letters gave me hope. She told me about how Jason, Kai, and Everly were doing. She wasn’t mad in her letters. Her tone was mostly sad, but she still insisted I call her Luna Chelsea instead of Chelsea anymore. Charmeine frowned, “Before you woke up in Nashville….do you remember someone telling you everything is not as it seems?” I raised an eyebrow, “Maybe.” I did. I thought about it a lot. It didn’t make sense. Charmeine threw back her head and laughed, “Oh my dear….for someone who has amassed such an expansive network fighting the ring…..you’d think you would be better at lying.” I snorted, “I’m better at evasions. I learned that from fairies.”  Charmeine smiled, “Yes, I know. I came to answer some questions of yours, but I fear you got me off task.” I laughed, “Answer my questions? Oh, you’ve got to be joking.” Charmeine smiled, “Look at your foot.” I sighed and looked at my foot. I gaped, “WHAT THE HELL?! I have a WHITE tattoo?! A WHITE SPARKLY TATTOO?! Who gets a white tattoo?” The white wolf snorted. I sighed, “Well of course you like white….you’re the white wolf….this actually does look like your fur. Did you give me a tattoo?” Charmeine answered, “You are special. You are chosen.” I frowned, “Chosen for what exactly?” Charmeine smiled, “I cannot answer that.” I laughed, “Of course you can’t. What was I thinking? Oh yeah...I was thinking you said you came here to answer my questions. Why am I not surprised you are now….not answering my questions after answering something I DIDN’T EVEN ASK!” I swear to you Apollo and Ajax were laughing. I glared at them. Charmeine smiled, “I am not your goddess.” I snorted, “I got that. You have wings. Selene doesn’t have wings. I’ve also heard her described. You don’t look like her.” Charmeine asked, “How did you know I wasn’t Azoney?” I threw my head back and groaned. Then said, “Sure….ask me questions after saying you were going to answer mine. OH MY GOOD LORD! Is ANYONE more annoying than the goddesses? I know because you CLEARLY have angel wings….not fairy wings. There is a difference between the two.”  Charmeine nodded, “A difference you will see.” I told her, “I’ve seen Sharon’s wings. The former Gamma Female of Red Run. Her son took over.” Charmeine nodded, “Sure. Those were not the wings I was referring to. You will be the reason Alexander unlocks his wings.” Several vile things to call her were on the tip of my tongue. I screamed and launched myself at her. She flew into the air. I screamed, “GET BACK DOWN HERE! Don’t you DARE upset him! That’s how he gets his wings. He gets so upset about something they come out.” Charmeine sighed, “You cannot stop that.” I shouted, “Oh yes I can! It’s about ME! Don’t underestimate me.” Charmeine told me, “Forces stronger than you reveal things to him.” I hissed, “What things?” Charmeine sighed and came back down, “I cannot tell you.” I glared at her, “What CAN you tell me?” Charmeine smiled, “I can tell you that you’re special.”  I rolled my eyes, “Cool. You’re super helpful. So glad you came here.” Charmeine laughed, “I like you. You remind me a lot of Alexander's mother….she was a bit more….” I interrupted, “Like a princess? Sorry to break it to you sister….I’m not a princess. I am a protector of the innocent. You know...all of your jobs...I do it for you because you’re inept and incapable. Can you tell me why I have a half moon and stars on the bottom of my foot?” The white wolf nudged my opposite hip with her feet. I sighed and checked my other foot. I hissed, “Oh great! Two white tattoos of the exact same thing on BOTH of my feet. How am I going to explain this in the morning? Do you goddess just sit together and chat about how you can make Melanie’s life harder? I mean….she’s doing our jobs...it’s making us look bad...let’s throw another wrench into things for fun. Her life hasn’t been hard enough these last almost seven freaking years. The whippings….the attempted marking….the fighting….the constant on the go to cultivate her network….not to mention saving the omegas that people are offering up like lambs to the slaughter….oh gosh….holding events to train people...coordinating training efforts across THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES….I fully believe we will be in other places….Training those who we are preparing to take over packs so they can train others….it’s not enough...LET’S ADD MORE! You all are such bitches. There’s just not a better word.” Charmeine tried to talk. I laughed, “Oh no. Your time to talk is over. I am speaking. Do you all get off on it? Are you trying to kill me? I mean you must be...I crossed paths with Alexander. Freya is weak. She can’t handle a rejection right now.” The white wolf whined again. Ajax and Apollo roared much like they did the first time I said it. I closed my eyes and asked, “Will it kill me if he rejects me? When he finds out who I am….Is he going to reject me? I can still run after these two weeks. I can rotate between packs training. I still have work to do. I still need to make Slade Carter pay for what he did to my family. GOD! You guys suck! I don’t want to run from him! Am I going to have to? That’s the LEAST you can do for me, answer that question. Do I have to give up my entire heart and run from the ONE man I want to in the arms of forever?” Charmeine said, “No, you do not need to run from him. A rejection would not kill you, and I already told you….he will not do that.” I snorted, “Pardon me if your word means little to nothing to me.” Charmeine studied me, “So I see.” I told her, “You may not allow your children to suffer long….but you’ve never done anything for the rest of us.”  Charmeine said, “We have rules.” I snorted, “Screw your rules. I save people regardless of if they are wolves, shifters, demons, vampires, hood, human, the list goes on. You should’ve chucked the rules out, and done what was right. That’s what the resistance does. We do what’s right. That’s what ALL of you should do.” Charmeine sighed, “Yet you don’t hold Aesir to the same standard.” I laughed, “Aesir is a god not a goddess. Goddesses act like they are so much better than gods because they are a mother to their children. You are all the worst mother’s I’ve ever met. You allow the suffering of your children at the hands of a sick few that you protect. Do you think...or do any of the other goddesses think when this comes to light….they will have a single child of theirs in their corner? No. They won’t. The Conners will turn their backs on Selene...maybe even Azoney. They will turn to Aesir. The god who actually polices his children. Who does not allow the wicked to prevail or prosper. Goddesses do both. Can you not see how complacent and selfish you all are? To allow the suffering of the innocents? You allow women to be treated like something to barter and sell. You sit back and watch men be forced to mark a sobbing girl and take them as their chosen mate….I guess that’s not entirely fair….Of course they do have a choice. They can watch every member of their family die until they do mark the girl….or everyone dies including the girl and themselves. Always a good choice. You all are jokes.” Charmeine nodded, “I thought you could feel that way. It’s why I told Selene I was a better choice. I fear this is not even a fraction of your anger for her.” I snorted, “Lady you haven’t touched my anger.” Charmeine paused, then said, “As I suspected. I am truly sorry for what you have been through. Nothing will make it better. Even the truth.” I frowned, “What truth?” Ajax and Apollo whined. I glared at Charmeine, “You’re upsetting them. I’m going to need you not to do that. We are having somewhat of a family reunion….you’re kind of ruining it.” She smiled, “Still protective of your brother’s wolves.” I told her, “They are a part of my brothers….well Apollo was….I keep looking for him. I know he’ll come back….Ajax is still a part of my brother.” Charmeine studied me, “You love them. Your brothers.” I threw my hands in the air, “Of course I do! They are my brothers.” Charmeine sighed, “You will be angry.” I groaned, “If you aren’t going to answer why, then leave.” Charmeine sighed, “I cannot go just yet, and I cannot answer that question exactly….I can tell you….turn to Alexander when you feel that your anger becomes overwhelming.” I asked, “I haven’t gotten that angry yet. Trust me, I’ve waded through the muck and mire of all the goddesses inadequacy enough to be plenty angry.”  Charmeine sighed, “A time is coming.” I nodded, “Right. A time….a time of what?” Charmeine answered, “The truth.” I yelled, “The truth about what?!” Charmeine said, “Everything.” I nodded “Sure. That clears it up. Can you go? You’re ruining the fictitious magical forest/meadow of the white wolf. I’m trying to have a family bonding moment.” Charmeine laughed, “I’m upsetting you.” I nodded, “Oh...Caught onto that did you? Took you long enough. Not angry enough to only have Xander keep my anger at bay….but hey. You know….I’ve never  been that angry.” Charmeine nodded, “Right. But a time…” I cut her off, “Is coming. Got it. You’re like a repeating record. Do you have any new information to spit out before you stop infringing on my super awesome fun place where magical things happen? I mean seriously! My subconscious is giving me a gift….you’re ruining it on so many levels. I haven’t seen...Ajax or Apollo in almost seven years. Can’t you all just let me be happy? Why do you goddesses have  to ruin everything for me?” Charmeine frowned, “I’m not trying to ruin everything. Wouldn’t Selene coming be worse?” I laughed, “On a level you cannot imagine Charmeine…..She can’t fly away from me though. I’d have kicked her ass by now.”  Charmeine laughed, “I think that you could.” I told her, “I KNOW I can. I’m far angrier with her than anyone else I know.” Charmeine sighed, “I’m the one who told you that Tristan cannot come here yet.” I frowned, “Why not? Apollo is here! I miss T. I miss my parents! Why can’t they come here! Selene could give that to me! I deserve to see them.” Charmeine agreed, “You do. It’s just not time for that.” I nodded, “Sure...do I have to wait for seven years exactly to see them? Almost seven is not good enough? What’s the stepping stone here in this magical fictional place?” Charmeine told me, “You will see them all soon.” I raised an eyebrow, “I get to come back here again?” Charmeine thought about it then answered, “You will be here often. You can be brought, and you can have the desire to come here.” My jaw dropped, “I can be brought here? To my subconscious….that’s what you’re saying.” Charmeine nodded to the white wolf, “She brought you here.” I sighed, “So a made up legend brought me to my subconscious...cool….that’s not weird at all.” Charmeine laughed, “You will understand one day.” I nodded, “Ok….when is soon? You said I could see T, mom, and dad….when?” Charmeine smiled, “Not just them.” I sighed, “Look lady, I don’t have any other dead family members. I just want to see them. Will you answer ONE of my dang questions! You said you were here to answer my questions…...not so far you’re not!”  Charmeine thought about it, “You will see Jason not long after you leave Alexander. He will not see you though.” My heart stopped for a full second. She continued, “You will see the others within a few days of that.” I glared at her, “Is that your way of telling me I’m going to die? I will be SO PISSED if I die. It BETTER be a good way to go out too.” Charmeine laughed, “No my dear….you have things to do. Aesir would blow a gasket if you died. Alexander would be distraught.” I snorted, “At least one of you cares.” Charmeine smiled, “Many of us care about you.” I laughed, “Well, you could’ve fooled me.” Charmeine frowned, “Evil forces were at work.” I nodded, “Right and you are what again? The balance? You do know when something is so weighted to the scales of evil….it is ACTUALLY your job to do something about it? Good LORD the amount of people who cannot remember what their purpose and what their job is...astounds me. I remember though. I know my job. I stand for the people you have forgotten. The people you hide from your other children. You hide the actions of those from Conners and their allies. Don’t think they will forgive you all for this once they find out. Pass that warning along to your goddess pals. Everything I know about Alpha Eric Conners and his wife Princess Luna Haley Conners….says they will be angry about this. Don’t stand there and tell me Selene and other goddesses didn’t actively help their rotten children hide from the good. I know she did. There’s no other way.”  Charmeine thought about it, “Some goddesses believe that in order to give their children chances to turn from their path….they must help them to hide their actions from those that would kill them.” I laughed, “What kind of crap logic is that?! Do you even understand the suffering that has allowed to those who do not deserve it? The atrocities committed against droves of people…..for a rotten person who deserves death. Because they do deserve to die. They are absolutely corrupt, and they WILL get what’s coming to them. They WILL die. I will dismantle the ring piece by piece. No one will suffer that does not deserve to by the time I’m through with them.” Charmeine nodded, “I believe you, but you need other pieces. You are the key.” I told her, “I have an army.” Charmeine nodded, “And you have Alexander for a reason.”  The thought of Alexander getting hurt was unfathomable to me. Charmeine sighed, “I’d give you advice about that, but I think it’s best left to Aesir. I think in your heart of hearts….you know you need him. The ONLY thing you lack...is the resources of the Conners and their allies. The allies of your home pack.” I snorted, “I have no home.” Charmeine insisted, “You do have a home. It’s almost time for you to return to them.” I frowned, “I still don’t have a home. Do you want me to die? Red Run hates me. If I go there, I'll be sentenced to death. I will not go home. Ever. It ceased to be my home when they banished me.” Charmeine sighed, “I must go.” I snorted, “Must and want to are different, Charmeine. You could answer my questions. You don’t want to because you want to play a game. The game of the goddesses. Give someone enough information to make them go crazy. Then make them fall apart when they put all the pieces together….but probably not in time. That’s all your games. Sadly for you, I’m not playing. I don’t have that kind of time in my life to obsess and worry over your words. I have actual people who depend on me. Something you’d know if you remembered what your job was. I’m not your play toy with your cryptic words.”  I turned my back on her. The white wolf was laying on the ground. I knelt down and pet her fur. I asked her, “Are you ok?” Charmeine answered, “She’s fine. Just a little weak. She will be fine.” I rolled my eyes. I refused to answer her. I told Apollo, “She acts like I was talking to her.” Apollo’s eyes were bright and he nudged me. I began to pet him. I whispered, “I’ve missed you Apollo.” I felt something wet on my arm. I frowned, “Apollo?” I pulled back. I gaped, “Are you crying? What’s wrong?” I searched him for an injury but found nothing. The white wolf took off again and dove into a pond. Of course there was a pond. I shrugged and chucked Alexander’s hoodie off and jumped in. When I surfaced Ajax and Apollo were growling. I frowned, “What’s wrong guys?” I turned around and they growled again. I cringed. They’d seen my back. I sighed, “It’s fine. I’m ok. I can make most of them disappear for a time. Some though...they stay.” Both looked at me like I was crazy. I began to swim laps. The white wolf was swimming beside me. I smiled and asked her, “So...you brought me here?” She nodded. I asked, “Why?” She just tilted her head.
