Chapter 6: The Fourth Prophecy

1110 Words
The Crimson estate loomed before Charlotte like a sleeping beast—its wrought-iron gates twisted with ivy, its windows dark and watchful. The moon hung low, casting silver light across the gravel path as she and Chris approached in silence. Every step toward the mansion felt heavier than the last, as if the ground itself resisted her arrival. Charlotte clutched her father’s journal tightly, the leather warm from her hands. Inside it lay the truth she’d uncovered: her father’s warnings, Cameron’s visions, and the fourth prophecy that had begun to unfold around her like a slow-burning fire. Chris glanced at her as they reached the gate. “Are you sure you want to do this?” Charlotte nodded. “I need to see it. The place where it all started.” Chris hesitated, then reached into his coat and produced a small brass key. “This opens the east wing. It’s where your father kept his study.” Charlotte’s breath caught. “You’ve been here before.” Chris didn’t answer. He simply unlocked the gate and pushed it open with a groan that echoed through the night. They stepped inside. The garden was overgrown, wild vines curling around statues and fountains long forgotten. The air smelled of damp earth and old secrets. Charlotte followed Chris through the maze of hedges until they reached a side entrance—an arched wooden door with a lion-shaped knocker. Chris unlocked it and stepped aside. Charlotte entered first. The east wing was colder than she expected. Dust coated every surface, and cobwebs hung like curtains from the ceiling. The hallway stretched ahead, lined with portraits of Crimson ancestors—stern faces with eyes that seemed to follow her. At the end of the hall was a door. Her father’s study. She reached for the handle, then paused. Chris placed a hand on her shoulder. “Whatever you find in there… it’s yours now.” Charlotte nodded and opened the door. The study was exactly as her father had described in his journal—bookshelves lining the walls, a fireplace cold and empty, and a desk beneath the window where moonlight pooled like spilled ink. She stepped inside slowly, her eyes scanning the room. Everything was untouched, preserved like a shrine. On the desk lay a stack of papers, yellowed with age. She picked up the top sheet. It was a letter. To Charlotte, If you’re reading this, then the prophecy has begun. You are the heir. The legacy is yours. But it comes with a price. The fourth prophecy is not just a warning—it is a choice. One shall betray with blood. One shall protect with fire. The masked shall fall. The twin shall rise. Only love can break the curse. Charlotte’s hands trembled. She had read these words before, but now they felt different—personal. Her father had written them for her. She turned to Chris. “What does it mean? ‘Protect with fire’? ‘Fall’? ‘Rise’?” Chris stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “It means the people around you will be tested. Their loyalty. Their love. Their truth.” Charlotte’s voice was barely a whisper. “And you?” Chris looked away. “I’ve already made my choice.” She studied him. The way he stood—guarded, distant, yet always near. The way he spoke—carefully, as if every word carried weight. There was something he wasn’t telling her. She turned back to the desk and opened the drawer. Inside was a velvet pouch. She opened it. A second ring. This one was different—silver, with a flame etched into the band. It pulsed with warmth, as if alive. Chris inhaled sharply. “That’s the Ring of Fire.” Charlotte looked up. “What does it do?” “It reveals truth,” he said. “But only when worn by the heir.” Charlotte hesitated, then slipped the ring onto her finger. The room shifted. The air grew warmer. The shadows deepened. And suddenly, Charlotte saw them—images flickering in the corners of the room. Her father, standing at the desk. Her mother, holding Cameron. Carlson, watching from the doorway. And Chris. Unmasked. Charlotte gasped. “You were here.” Chris nodded. “I was your father’s apprentice. He taught me everything. He trusted me.” Charlotte’s voice trembled. “Then why did you hide?” Chris stepped closer. “Because I failed him. The night he died… I was supposed to protect him.” Charlotte’s heart pounded. “What happened?” Chris’s eyes darkened. “Camila found out about you. She sent someone to silence him. I tried to stop it, but I was too late.” Charlotte felt tears sting her eyes. “You couldn’t have known.” Chris shook his head. “I should have. I was trained to see the signs. But I was blinded by loyalty.” Charlotte reached for his hand. “You’re not alone anymore.” Chris looked at her, and for the first time, the mask slipped. She saw the pain, the guilt, the longing. And something else. Love. They left the study in silence, the ring glowing faintly on Charlotte’s finger. As they stepped into the hallway, a gust of wind slammed the door shut behind them. Charlotte turned. “Did you hear that?” Chris nodded. “We’re not alone.” They moved quickly through the corridor, past the portraits and into the main hall. The air grew colder, the shadows thicker. And then they saw him. Carlson. Standing at the top of the grand staircase, eyes burning. “You found it,” he said. Charlotte stepped forward. “I found the truth.” Carlson descended slowly. “Then you know what comes next.” Charlotte’s voice was steady. “The fifth prophecy.” Carlson smiled. “It’s not written. It’s lived.” Chris stepped between them. “She’s not ready.” Carlson’s gaze shifted. “Then she’ll fall.” He drew a blade from his coat. Charlotte froze. Chris moved fast, blocking the strike, grappling with Carlson. The two crashed to the floor, fighting, shadows dancing across the walls. Charlotte reached for the ring, its warmth pulsing through her. She held it high. “Stop!” she shouted. The room froze. The ring flared, casting crimson light across the hall. Carlson staggered back, eyes wide. “It’s true…” Chris knelt, bleeding. “You’re the heir. The legacy is yours.” Charlotte stepped forward. “Then let it end.” She placed the ring on the pedestal at the center of the hall. The light flared. And everything went dark.
