Chapter 7 : Uncharted Territory

1133 Words
For the first time in a long time, Myra felt like she wasn’t constantly chasing stability—she was living in it. Her relationship with Arjun, undefined as it was, had settled into something comfortable. Something real. That didn’t mean it was easy. "You’re late," Myra muttered, arms crossed as Arjun strolled into the student council meeting twenty minutes after it had started. He slid into the seat beside her with an unapologetic grin. "Traffic." She shot him a look. "You walked here." He chuckled. "Exactly." Tanya, seated across from them, watched the exchange with amusement. "You two really are something else." The meeting proceeded with its usual debates, but Myra found it increasingly difficult to focus. Every time Arjun leaned in to whisper a sarcastic remark in her ear, she had to fight the urge to either glare at him or smile. When the meeting finally adjourned, Arjun caught her wrist before she could leave. "Come with me." She frowned. "Where?" "You’ll see." Curiosity won out over logic, and she let him drag her through the halls until they reached the rooftop. The sky was painted in shades of orange and purple, the sun dipping below the horizon. "I figured we could use a break," Arjun said, hopping onto the ledge. "You’ve been working too hard." Myra sighed but sat beside him. "I like working hard." "I know. That’s why I’m making sure you don’t forget to breathe." She looked at him then, really looked at him. And she realized something—he had become her safe place, in ways she never expected. "Thank you," she murmured. Arjun grinned. "For what?" She hesitated before answering. "For being here." He didn’t say anything, but when he laced his fingers through hers, Myra knew he understood. And that was enough. The rhythm of school life continued, but something had changed. Myra and Arjun had crossed an invisible threshold, and now, there was no turning back. Their once playful bickering carried a different weight, their fleeting touches held unspoken promises, and the spaces between them were growing smaller with each passing day. But not everyone was happy about it. "You need to be careful," Tanya said one afternoon, her voice unusually serious as they sat on the school lawn. "People are starting to notice." Myra frowned, pulling her knees to her chest. "Notice what?" "You and Arjun. The way you look at each other. The way he always finds a reason to be near you." Tanya sighed. "And you know how people love to talk." "Let them talk." Myra tried to sound indifferent, but there was an undeniable knot in her stomach. Tanya hesitated before speaking again. "Have you two even talked about what this is?" Myra didn’t answer right away. She had been avoiding that conversation for days, convincing herself that what they had was enough. But was it? --- Later that evening, Myra found herself standing outside the library, waiting. Arjun had texted her to meet him there, saying he had something important to discuss. When he finally arrived, he looked different—serious, almost hesitant. "What’s wrong?" she asked immediately. Arjun rubbed the back of his neck. "I’ve been thinking. About us." Her heart skipped a beat. "And?" "I don’t want to be just a ‘thing’ with you, Myra. I don’t want to be stuck in this undefined space forever." He exhaled. "I want us to be something real." She swallowed, emotions tangling in her chest. "Arjun, I—" "I know you’re scared," he interrupted gently. "And I get it. But I need to know if this—if we—mean as much to you as it does to me." Silence stretched between them, filled with uncertainty and unspoken emotions. Finally, Myra stepped forward, taking his hand in hers. "I’m scared," she admitted. "But I don’t want to lose this. Lose you." A slow smile spread across Arjun’s face. "Then we’ll figure it out. Together." And as he laced his fingers through hers, Myra realized something—sometimes, taking a leap of faith was the only way forward. The weight of Myra’s decision lingered long after that night in the library. She and Arjun had crossed another threshold, stepping into something deeper, something neither of them could ignore anymore. But with that step forward came new challenges—none of them were quite ready to face. The first sign of trouble came on a Monday morning, when Myra arrived at school to find Tanya waiting by her locker, arms crossed and an unreadable expression on her face. "So," Tanya said slowly, "when were you going to tell me?" Myra hesitated. "Tell you what?" Tanya sighed. "That you and Arjun are officially a thing now?" Heat crept up Myra’s neck. "We haven’t really talked about labels—" "But it’s obvious," Tanya interrupted. "And not just to me. Everyone is talking about it. You two are the new gossip of the school." Myra’s stomach twisted. She knew this would happen, but she hadn’t expected it so soon. "Does it really matter what people think?" "It does when people start making things up," Tanya said, lowering her voice. "I overheard some girls saying Arjun is just playing with you. That he’s not the ‘relationship type.’" Myra’s heart pounded. "That’s not true." "I know that," Tanya said gently. "But do you? Have you two really talked about what this means?" The question hung in the air, heavier than Myra wanted to admit. --- That evening, Myra found herself outside Arjun’s house, gripping her phone tightly as she debated whether to knock or turn back. But before she could decide, the door swung open. Arjun raised an eyebrow. "Stalking me now, class prez?" She rolled her eyes but stepped inside, walking past him without waiting for an invitation. "We need to talk." Arjun shut the door behind her, his smirk fading. "Okay. About what?" She turned to face him, arms crossed. "Us." His eyes flickered with something unreadable. "What about us?" "People are talking, Arjun. Saying things about you. About us." She exhaled. "And I need to know where we stand." Arjun studied her for a long moment before sighing. "Why do you care what they think?" "Because I care about you!" The words burst out before she could stop them, and for the first time, the truth stood between them, raw and undeniable. Arjun blinked, then took a step closer. "Say that again." Myra swallowed, feeling suddenly exposed. "I care about you." A slow smile spread across his lips. "Good. Because I’ve been waiting for you to admit that." Before she could respond, he reached for her hand, lacing their fingers together. "Let them talk, Myra. The only thing that matters is us." And somehow, in that moment, she believed him.
