Chapter 5

The settlement buzzed with activity, the pack members going about their daily tasks, but there was an underlying tension in the air—one that had only grown since the rogue’s arrival. Inside one of the larger cabins near the edge of the settlement, Darius, the pack’s beta, paced restlessly. His mind was a storm of worry and doubt. He had always been Selene’s most loyal supporter, standing by her side through every challenge, but this situation with the rogue was different. It was affecting her in ways he hadn’t seen before, and it worried him. Darius was a large, imposing figure, his broad shoulders and muscular build a testament to his strength. But beneath his Stoic exterior, he was deeply concerned about his alpha. Selene had always been strong, but this rogue had shaken her in a way that nothing else had. He could see it in her eyes, hear it in the edge of her voice when she spoke about him. He stopped pacing and looked out the window, his eyes scanning the forest beyond. He couldn’t help but wonder who this rogue really was and why he had been drawn to their territory. The resemblance to Selene’s ex-mate was uncanny, almost eerie, but there had to be more to it than that. Darius’ thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the cabin door opening. He turned to see Myra, one of the pack’s elders, stepping inside. Myra was a wise and respected member of the pack, her silver hair and lined face a testament to the many years she had lived. “Darius,” Myra greeted him, her voice calm and soothing. “You look troubled.” Darius sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. “It’s the Alpha. I’m worried about her.” Myra nodded, her expression thoughtful. “This rogue has unsettled her.” “Yes,” Darius replied, his frustration evident. “I don’t know what to do. She’s so focused on him, so determined to get answers, but I’m afraid it’s affecting her judgment.” Myra approached him, placing a gentle hand on his arm. “Selene is strong, but even the strongest leaders need support. She carries a great burden, and this rogue has brought up old wounds that have never fully healed.” Darius nodded, his jaw tightening. “I know, but what can I do? She won’t listen to reason. She’s convinced that this rogue holds the key to something important.” “Perhaps he does,” Myra said softly. “But it’s also possible that he’s just a reminder of a past she hasn’t fully let go of.” Darius looked down, his mind racing. He had always been there for Selene, but this felt different. It wasn’t just about protecting her physically—it was about helping her navigate the emotional turmoil that had been stirred up by the rogue’s arrival. “I need to do something,” he said finally. “I can’t just stand by and watch her struggle.” Myra nodded in agreement. “You’re right. Selene needs someone she can trust, someone who can help her see clearly. You’ve always been that person for her, Darius.” He met Myra’s eyes, seeing the wisdom and understanding in them. She was right—he couldn’t let Selene face this alone. He needed to be the anchor she could rely on, the voice of reason when emotions threatened to cloud her judgment. “I’ll talk to her,” Darius said. “I’ll make her see that she doesn’t have to do this alone.” Myra smiled, a hint of relief in her expression. “Good. She needs you now more than ever.” Darius nodded and turned to leave, his mind already focused on what he needed to say to Selene. But as he reached the door, Myra’s voice stopped him. “Be gentle with her,” Myra advised. “She’s been through more than most, and this situation has reopened old wounds. She may not show it, but she’s hurting.” Darius looked back at her, a flicker of sadness in his eyes. “I know. And I’ll do whatever it takes to help her through this.” With that, he left the cabin, his steps purposeful as he made his way to the stone building where the rogue was being held. He knew he had to tread carefully—Selene was not one to easily accept help, especially when she felt vulnerable. But Darius had always been able to reach her, even in her darkest moments, and he hoped that this time would be no different. As he approached the building, he saw Selene standing outside, her eyes fixed on the ground as if lost in thought. She looked up as he neared, her expression guarded. “Darius,” she greeted him, her voice cool. “What are you doing here?” “I wanted to check on you,” he replied, his tone gentle but firm. “I’m worried about you, Selene.” Her eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of irritation crossing her face. “I’m fine. There’s nothing to worry about.” “I don’t believe that,” Darius said, stepping closer. “This rogue… he’s getting to you. I can see it.” Selene’s jaw tightened, her eyes flashing with a mix of anger and something else—something that looked like pain. “He’s a problem that needs to be dealt with. That’s all.” Darius sighed, knowing that pushing too hard would only make her shut down. He needed to approach this carefully. “Selene, you don’t have to face this alone. You have the entire pack behind you. You have me.” She looked away, her expression softening for just a moment. “I know, Darius. But this… this is something I need to handle. It’s personal.” “And that’s exactly why you shouldn’t handle it alone,” he countered. “You’re too close to this. Let me help you.” There was a long silence as Selene weighed his words. Darius could see the conflict in her eyes, the struggle between her need to appear strong and her very real emotions. Finally, she let out a sigh and nodded. “Fine,” she said quietly. “But I’m not backing down. I need to know who he is and why he’s here.” Darius nodded, relief washing over him. “We’ll figure it out together.” As they stood there, the tension between them eased slightly. Selene knew she could rely on Darius, that he would always be there to support her.
