Chapter 11

967 Words
The morning sun had barely risen, casting a soft, golden light over the Silver Blood Moon pack’s settlement. The air was cool, filled with the earthy scent of dew on the grass and the faint rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze. Selene was already up, her mind focused on the tasks of the day as she made her way to the training grounds. She moved with purpose, her strides confident, but there was a heaviness in her heart that she couldn’t quite shake. The previous day’s meeting with the elders still weighed on her, their words echoing in her mind. She knew she had to maintain control, to keep the pack’s trust, but it was becoming increasingly difficult with each passing day. As she approached the grounds, she spotted Darius ahead, overseeing the morning training session. The warriors moved with disciplined precision, their focus sharp as they practiced their forms under his watchful eye. Darius noticed her approaching and stepped away from the group, his expression a mixture of concern and resolve. “Good morning, Alpha,” he greeted her, his voice calm but carrying the weight of unspoken worries. “Morning, Darius,” Selene replied, her tone steady. “How’s the training?” “Going well,” Darius said, though his eyes were on her, searching for any sign of the turmoil he knew she was feeling. “The warriors are strong and focused.” Selene nodded, her gaze drifting over the training grounds, taking in the sight of her pack members working together, their movements synchronized and purposeful. But as her eyes moved across the field, they caught sight of a figure standing off to the side, observing the training from a distance. It was Michael. He stood alone, his posture tense, but his gaze steady as he watched the warriors practice. He looked different today—cleaner, his hair no longer matted, his clothes less ragged. But it was his eyes that drew Selene’s attention, eyes that were filled with a depth of emotion she couldn’t quite decipher. For a moment, time seemed to slow as she looked at him. Her heart tightened, a confusing swirl of emotions surging within her—anger, sadness, longing, and something she couldn’t name. The resemblance to her former mate was still so striking, it was as if she were seeing a ghost. And yet, there was something different in Michael’s gaze, something that spoke of a life and a story that was entirely his own. Her breath caught in her throat, and she couldn’t tear her eyes away. But before she could fully process what she was feeling, Darius moved to stand in front of her, blocking her view of Michael. “Selene,” Darius said quietly, his voice firm but gentle. “He’s not him. You have to let this go.” Selene blinked, the spell of the moment broke as she refocused on Darius’s face. His eyes were filled with concern, a concern that was more for her than for the rogue. He had always been able to see through her defenses, to understand the emotions she tried so hard to keep buried. “I know,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “I know what I’m doing, Darius.” “Do you?” Darius asked, his tone gentle but insistent. “Because it seems like you’re hurting yourself by keeping him close. He’s not the one who betrayed you. You can’t punish him for someone else’s sins.” Selene’s jaw tightened, the truth of his words hitting her like a blow. She knew he was right, but it didn’t make the emotions any less real, any less painful. “I need answers,” she said, her voice firmer now, though there was a hint of desperation in it. “I need to understand why he looks like him. There’s something here, something I can’t ignore.” Darius' expression softened. “I get that, Selene. But you have to be careful. Don’t let your past blind you to what’s right in front of you. He’s not your enemy, and he might even be an ally if you give him a chance.” Selene looked away, her mind racing. She knew Darius was trying to help her, trying to guide her back to the path she had always walked with such confidence. But the presence of Michael had shaken her in ways she hadn’t expected, and she wasn’t sure how to navigate the feelings that had been stirred up. “I’ll handle it,” she said finally, her voice carrying a note of finality. “But thank you, Darius. I appreciate your concern.” Darius nodded, though the worry in his eyes didn’t fade. “Just remember, we’re all here for you, Selene. You don’t have to carry this alone.” With that, he stepped aside, allowing her to continue on her path. But as she started to walk away, she couldn’t resist the urge to look back. Her eyes found Michael once more, and for a brief moment, their gazes locked. There was something in his eyes—an understanding, a connection that sent a shiver down her spine. It was as if he could see right through her, see the turmoil she was trying so hard to hide. The moment was brief, but it felt like an eternity. Selene quickly turned her head away, her heart pounding as she forced herself to keep moving. She couldn’t let herself get caught up in this, couldn’t let her emotions cloud her judgment. She was the Alpha, and she had to stay strong, for her pack and for herself. But as she walked away, the image of Michael’s eyes remained with her, haunting her thoughts and stirring feelings she wasn’t ready to face.
