CHAPTER TWELVE: THE MEMORY THAT WASN'T HERS

1368 Words
Something was moving beneath the building. Sophia could feel it. Not through the floor. Not through sound. Through memory. A vibration ran through her body, triggering images she couldn't control. A white corridor. A red door. Two children. A man screaming. Then darkness. Sophia grabbed the edge of the console. Cassian noticed immediately. "Sophia?" She didn't answer. Her eyes were open, but she wasn't seeing the room anymore. She was somewhere else. Somewhere twenty-one years ago. A little girl stood in a white room. Sophia knew the girl. Lily. But there was another child beside her. A boy. He was holding Lily's hand. Sophia watched from the doorway. The boy turned. And looked directly at her. "You're late." Sophia's heart stopped. She knew that voice. She had heard it before. But where? The memory changed. The boy was older. Sixteen. Standing in front of a locked door. He was bleeding. Someone shouted from behind him. "Open the door!" The boy looked at Sophia. "Don't trust anyone." Then he pressed his hand against a glass panel. A strange symbol appeared. A circle. Inside it were three numbers. 017. Sophia suddenly returned to the present. She gasped. Cassian caught her before she fell. "Sophia!" She pushed him away. "My brother." Cassian stared at her. "What did you see?" "He was here." "When?" "I don't know." "Tell me." Sophia looked at him. "He was young." Cassian's face tightened. "How young?" "Sixteen, maybe seventeen." Cassian stepped back. "My brother was seventeen when he disappeared." Sophia nodded slowly. "Then it was him." Cassian stared at the floor. For years he had lived with one certainty. His brother was dead. Now that certainty was collapsing. Lily walked toward them. "What did you see?" Sophia looked at her. "Your memories." Lily froze. "What?" "I saw you." "Where?" "The white room." Lily's expression changed. Sophia continued. "You were holding his hand." Lily's eyes filled with tears. "You saw him?" Sophia nodded. "What was his name?" Lily whispered: "Daniel." Cassian looked up sharply. "Daniel Black." Lily nodded. "Yes." Cassian turned away. His hands were trembling. "My brother." Sophia watched him carefully. "Why was he here?" Lily looked at the locked door. "Because he discovered the truth." "What truth?" "That The Black Room wasn't creating assassins." Sophia frowned. "Then what were they creating?" Lily looked at her. "Identities." Cassian's expression hardened. "Explain." "They didn't just train people to kill. They trained them to become someone else." Sophia understood. "False identities." "More than that." Lily moved to another terminal. "They could take a person, erase parts of their history, implant new behavioral patterns, give them a new identity and place them inside governments, corporations, intelligence agencies." Cassian stared at the screen. "Agents who didn't know they were agents." "Exactly." Sophia felt a chill. "Then Project Echo..." "Was designed to remember the original identities." Lily looked at her. "You could recognize people even after they were changed." Sophia's mind raced. "Faces." "Yes." "Voices." "Yes." "Behavior." "Yes." "That's why they wanted me." Lily nodded. "They were afraid you could expose them." Cassian looked at the locked archive. "And Daniel discovered it." "Yes." "What happened to him?" Lily's face became unreadable. "I don't know." Cassian stepped toward her. "You were there." "I was there when they took him." "What happened?" Lily looked at Sophia. "He told me to run." "And you did?" "I was a child." "You left him." Lily's eyes hardened. "I was eight." Cassian stopped. "I'm sorry." Lily looked away. "Don't be." A loud metallic sound came from beneath the floor. Everyone froze. Sophia looked down. "What was that?" Lily's face changed. "They're opening the lower chamber." Cassian looked at her. "What lower chamber?" "The place where they kept the original subjects." Sophia's pulse increased. "How many?" Lily shook her head. "I don't know." The floor beneath them suddenly opened. Cassian grabbed Sophia. They jumped backward as a section of the floor collapsed. A steel staircase appeared. Darkness waited below. Sophia looked at Lily. "You knew this was here." "I knew there was a chamber." "Then let's go." Cassian looked at her. "Absolutely not." Sophia raised an eyebrow. "You have a better idea?" "Yes." "What?" "Leave." Sophia shook her head. "Not without answers." Cassian looked at the opening. "We may not like what we find." Sophia met his eyes. "I stopped being afraid of that a long time ago." Cassian sighed. "Fine." They descended. The deeper they went, the colder the air became. At the bottom was a long corridor. Doors lined both sides. Each had a number. 1. 2. 3. Sophia stopped at 017. Her hand hovered over the door. Lily stood beside her. "That's yours." Sophia opened it. Inside was a small room. A bed. A chair. A camera. Nothing else. Then Sophia noticed something carved into the wall. Two children's names. SOPHIA LILY She touched them. A memory exploded into her mind. Two little girls sitting on the floor. Lily was crying. Sophia held her hand. "Don't be scared." "They're going to take me." "I won't let them." "You can't stop them." "I'll find you." The memory ended. Sophia opened her eyes. "I promised her." Lily was crying. "You did." Sophia looked at her. "I forgot." "They made you forget." "No." Sophia shook her head. "I forgot because I was afraid." Lily reached for her hand. Sophia hesitated. Then took it. For the first time in twenty-one years, the sisters stood together. Not as subjects. Not as weapons. As family. Cassian watched silently. Then he noticed something on the wall. A small black panel. He pressed it. A hidden compartment opened. Inside was a file. SUBJECT 017 — FINAL PHASE Sophia took it. She opened the first page. Her photograph stared back at her. But the date was wrong. It wasn't twenty-one years old. It was recent. Three months ago. Sophia's expression changed. "Someone updated this." Cassian took the file. The final page contained a photograph. Sophia. Walking into a building. Three months earlier. She recognized the location. Her own home. Cassian looked at her. "Someone has been watching you." Sophia turned the page. There was another photograph. Eleanor. Another. Victor. Another. Cassian. Sophia's stomach dropped. "This isn't surveillance." Lily looked over her shoulder. "What is it?" Sophia reached the final photograph. It showed the four of them standing together. Eleanor. Victor. Sophia. Cassian. But the photograph had been taken only hours earlier. Inside this building. Before they had arrived. Cassian stared at it. "That's impossible." Sophia looked at the camera in the ceiling. "Someone is inside the system." A speaker crackled. Then a man's voice filled the room. "Very good, Subject 017." Sophia froze. She knew that voice. It was the voice from her childhood memories. The man who had stood behind the glass. The man who had told her to remember. Cassian raised his weapon. "Who are you?" The voice laughed. "You still don't remember me." Sophia stared at the speaker. "I will." "That's what I'm counting on." The lights came on. A wall in front of them turned transparent. Behind it stood a man. Older now. Gray hair. Black suit. Calm expression. Sophia stared at him. Then Lily whispered: "No." Cassian looked at her. "You know him?" Lily backed away. "He was the director." "Of The Black Room?" Lily shook her head. "No." Her voice trembled. "He's the man who created Project Echo." Sophia stared through the glass. The man smiled. "My name is Jonathan Vale." He looked directly at Sophia. "And I have been waiting twenty-one years for you to remember me." Sophia stepped forward. "Where is my brother?" Jonathan's smile faded. "Which one?" Sophia froze. Cassian raised his weapon. "What do you mean?" Jonathan looked at him. "Your brother is alive." Cassian's breathing stopped. Jonathan continued. "But he's not the person you remember." Sophia felt a cold sensation crawl up her spine. "Where is he?" Jonathan smiled again. "He's standing closer to you than you think." Sophia slowly turned toward Cassian. Then toward Lily. Neither of them spoke. The lights went out. And in the darkness, a man's voice whispered directly into Sophia's ear: "Hello, little sister." Sophia's blood turned cold. It wasn't Cassian. It wasn't Lily. It was someone behind her.
