"Sometimes all you need is a second chance, because time wasn't ready for the first one." ____________________________________________________________________________________ “Who are you, and why are you on our territory?” A pack warrior demanded, wasting no time in getting to the point. His outburst took me by surprise. Taking a deep breath, I mustered the courage to handle the situation without violence. Snow, my inner wolf, shared my unease but managed to calm down enough to avoid bloodshed. “Well,” he demanded, stepping forward. I gulped, my eyes surveyed between the pack warrior and the alleged Beta. “Colin,” there pupils glazed over, indicating a private link. The pack guard grunted, glared at me than stepped back in line. Okay, I thought. I wonder what the Beta said. “I apologise for him,” the alleged Beta said, interrupting my train of thoughts. “I ment what I said earlier . Where only here to assist nothing more. Can you please tell me your name.” “Um, I’m Rose, and this is Lilly,” I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper. “We’ve been on the run for a while, and we didn’t mean to enter your territory. We’re truly sorry for the trouble.” The Beta chuckled, amusement dancing in his eyes. “You don’t even know where you are, do you?” he remarked, his voice laced with amusement. My heart skipped a beat as I waited for his response. “You’re in The Midnight King Pack.” I gasped, realizing the trouble we had stumbled into. The Midnight King Pack was renowned worldwide for its strength and power. And that’s not the half of it. The Midnight King Pack is home to the royal family of werewolf. I stared at the stranger, shell-shocked. This was bad—really bad. The Beta noticed my reaction and smirked, clearly taking pride in his pack’s reputation. “Which pack are you from?” he inquired, curiosity evident in his tone. “The Black Moon Pack,” I mumbled, barely audible. The Beta’s eyes widened in recognition, but he quickly composed himself. “You two are coming with us,” he declared, his words leaving no room for argument. One of the pack warriors approached Lilly, who was still asleep, and gently picked her up. “Please,” I pleaded, desperation creeping into my voice. “Please don’t kill us.” The Beta laughed, his amusement evident. “I won’t,” he assured me, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. “But it’s not up to me.” Frustration and fear overwhelmed me as they escorted us toward the packhouse. The journey felt like an eternity, my mind racing with uncertainty and worry. We where admitted to the pack hospital, where we would get a check up and wait. I chewed on my bottom lip, a habit I had accumulated whenever I’m nerves. I was worried about Lily. I had grown attached to her. She was like my daughter to me, my blood and I’ll do whatever I could to protect her, like I promised her mom. during our time on the run. She was so young and innocent—she didn’t deserve a life like this. She should be experiencing the joys of childhood, not waiting for a trial. It felt like hours before the Beta returned. “The Alpha King is ready to see you,” he announced, breaking the tension. I nodded in response, carefully scooping Lilly from the hospital bed without waking her. Following the Beta, we walked through several hallways until we reached what appeared to be the ballroom. I could be wrong. Its noy like I’ve seen one before. That being said the sight before me took my breath away, befitting a ballroom, assuming it is one. Unfortunately there was no time to revel in its beauty. Lilly started to stir in my arms, as we continued on. “You okay there, pumpkin,” I whispered softly, trying to reassure her. She nodded sleepily, confusion evident in her eyes. I sniffed the air, catching a distinct scent that was both forest and chocolate—a peculiar combination. I whispered to Lilly, asking if she smelled it too, but she shook her head, her confusion growing. She wiggled in my arms. “Do you want to be let down, I asked. She nodded her response. Placing her down, I took her small hands in mine. As we approached our destination, a massive door stood before us, marking the threshold to an uncertain future. It swung open, revealing a magnificent throne room. My senses were overwhelmed as a delicious aroma filled the air. It smelled like a forest after rain mixed with the sweet scent of chocolate. My wolf yelped, recognizing the unmistakable sign of a mate. “It can’t be,” I whispered, bewildered and conflicted. How was it possible to have another mate so soon? My mind raced, trying to make sense of the situation. On instinct, I took a step back, unsure of how to react. “I don‘t appreciate having my mate move away from me,” a voice echoed through the room, sending shivers down my spine—in a good way. I snapped out of my daze, refusing to be rejected again. It had been a months since I experienced the pain of rejection, and I couldn’t bear to go through it again. Without thinking, I bolted out of the throne room, desperately seeking solace. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, not daring to glance back. Lily, remained behind, and I vowed to return for her somehow. The pain of the past still fresh in my heart, I couldn’t bear to go through it again. So, in that moment, fear overwhelmed me, and I succumbed to the urge to flee. I knew it was cowardly and pathetic, but I couldn’t find it in me to care at that moment. I couldn’t bare to face another rejection. * * * I ran fast as my legs could carry me, not daring to glance back. So, in that moment, fear overwhelmed me, and I succumbed to the urge to flee. I knew it was cowardly and pathetic, but I couldn’t find it in me to care at that moment. I found myself in a peaceful meadow, surrounded by vibrant life. I made my way to a serene river, watching the fish swim lazily beneath the surface. My mind was consumed with questions. How was it possible to have a second chance mate? Could the Moon Goddess have gifted me this opportunity as an apology for the pain I had endured with my first mate? “Maybe he’s our second chance mate,” my wolf chimes in, offering a glimmer of hope. I mulled over the idea, pondering the possibility that the Moon Goddess had shown mercy and blessed us with another chance at love. However, the bitter memories of Cole’s rejection flooded my mind, reminding me of the heartache and devastation I had experienced. I couldn’t bear to face that pain again. Suddenly, a rustling sound snapped me out of my thoughts. My wolf immediately went on high alert, scanning the surroundings for potential danger. To my relief, a fluffy white bunny emerged from the bushes, causing me to sigh with relief. It was just a harmless bunny. “It’s okay. It’s just a bunny,” I reassured myself, trying to calm my racing heart. I returned to my spot by the river, gazing at the gentle flow of water. But the undeniable truth lingered in the back of my mind—I had a mate, and the uncertainty of what lay ahead weighed heavily on my shoulders. Lost in my thoughts, I continued to watch the river’s tranquil flow, hoping to find some clarity amidst the chaos within me. The presence of a mate was both a blessing and a curse, stirring conflicting emotions. While the idea of a second chance ignited a glimmer of hope, the fear of being rejected once more cast a dark shadow over my heart. As I contemplated my next move, a soft breeze brushed against my skin, carrying with it the scent of earth and warmth. A soothing fragrance of blooming flowers enveloped me, providing a momentary respite from my worries. Maybe I should confront my fate, embrace the unknown, and take a leap of faith. Who knows maybe this time might be different.
