CHAPTER 004.

1274 Words
It was as if everyone around us vanished as I stood still, staring at the man who looked back at me. There was no change in his facial expression. He didn't even bat an eye. It was as if he had envisioned running into me countless times. I swallowed the lump in my throat, parted my lips to say his name, but as if I was being choked, I couldn't mutter a word. Finally, I mustered the courage to take a step closer to him, but then again, a panicked voice yelled my name. “Doctor Melanie!” “I… I’m coming!” I exclaimed, turned away from his direction, and then rushed to the woman. “Hi,” I released a deep breath as I took a look at the state of her arm. “Get me a pack of warm saline!” I ordered. The surgical team and I got swiftly into treating her arm, and after I was done cleaning up her wound, I proceeded to stitch it up. I had already given her a shot to lessen the pain, but I still looked up to her. “This might hurt a little.” “Oh,” she whined, and then reached out her hand to Nicholas, who stood closely beside her. I swallowed hard, closed my eyes for a moment as I watched them fondle their hands together. I raised my head to look at her, and she was staring at me. It was just as though she was waiting for me to raise my head. This woman knew me, certainly. She knew who I was. I sniffed as I bore my eyes deeply into her. It was not hard to understand why she was called every man's first crush. Amara was a beautiful woman. She probably knew that too. Joined with her extremely delicate face, I knew any man would not hesitate to break down at the sight of her. Even the female nurses around whined in pity on her behalf. And this realization made my heart swell in anger. I didn’t even need to think too far about why Nicholas had fallen for her. When I felt a subtle poke behind me, I smacked, understanding that I was carried away, and I was being called back to attention. “Cut,” I mumbled as I did the first stitch. —— Finally done with stitching up the woman and bandaging her arm, I removed my mask and then said to her. “You need to keep the wound clean and dry and then come back in the next forty-eight hours for a check-up,” I said, and then took a step back. Instantly, I watched her let go of Nicholas’s hand and then grab the tip of my scrub. “Excuse me?” I raised a brow and then took a step closer to her. Instead, she grabbed my hand and then wore the sweetest smile ever. I almost cringed at the sight, knowing fully well this was not real and this woman knew exactly what she was doing. “Will it leave a scar?” She asked me, her voice so tiny that I could almost not get what she was saying. “You just need to follow the instructions given, and then use the ointment and medication given to you. Then, it will not leave a scar,” I answered her, and then tried to wriggle my hand away. “I’m sorry. I am actually quite conscious of my body, so…” she looked down at her bare arms and then glanced at Nicholas. I nodded my head and then tried to let go of her grip without making it obvious to the people around us. “You are so nice, gosh!” She exclaimed, and I drew my brows together. “You are…” she tilted her head, nodded her head as she saw my name on the tag pinned to my chest. “Melanie Henderson. Doctor Melanie.” “Y… yeah.” “You are so nice, Doctor. I am actually glad that a very kind Doctor like you treated me. Your hands were so gentle that I could actually have slept while you stitched me up.” I nodded my head as the nurses cheered silently and then took a glance at Nicholas who was looking at the woman the whole time. “Babe, would you thank her on my behalf too?” She raised her head and asked Nicholas. “Uhm… sure,” he nodded his head and then raised his head to look at me. I shook my head, hoping he would not say such bullshit to me. I would rather keep hearing them from Amara, but not from him. “Thank you,” he said to me, and then dropped his eyes on the woman. “She might not look like it, but she is so much a scaredy cat.” When he said that, the female nurses mumbled in excitement, and I felt nothing but the wave of nausea building up in my chest. “How…” I sniffed and then closed my eyes for a second. I better not make a fool of myself right now. “I…” The moment I opened my mouth to talk, I felt the need to puke, so I palmed my mouth and then dashed away. ————— “Amara must really like you, Doctor Melanie, don’t you think?” I raised my head as the nurses trailed into the doctor’s lounge where I sat in silence. It was leisure time, so I knew there was more to come. “Are you feeling sick, though? You’ve not been yourself since morning. You look pretty distracted, too,” one of them asked, and I shook my head. “I’m okay.” “But, Doctor. Have you met Amara before? For someone like her, who is rumored not to have friends, she seemed to really like you?” I rolled my eyes in annoyance and then asked, “Why would you think so? Because she held my hands and thanked me?” I stood up and then hissed. “Is she the first patient thanking me or are you all making a big deal out of this just because she is a celebrity?!” I snapped. “f**k…” I mumbled inwardly as they all watched me in silence. “Excuse me,” I said and then walked out of the room, not minding the doctors who entered at the moment and then called my name. While I walked down the hall, my phone vibrated in my pocket, and I removed it. It was Nicholas. I inhaled as I watched the phone ring for a while before I picked it up. “Hey,” he said, and I closed my eyes. “Hi.” “What time are you getting off work?” “Why?” “Let’s have dinner together at my father’s.” “Okay.” The wave of regret that hit me at her I dropped the call was second to none, and I bit my lower lip in anger. I had so many things I wanted to say to him. So many things I wanted to ask him. First off, I wanted to tell him to apologize to me for the pain he had recently caused me, but, like usual, I had agreed to whatever he said, without thinking twice about what I wanted. Ah… Perhaps his father heard what happened and wanted to settle things between us? After all, Mr. Henderson was quite fond of me.
