Vincenzo's Pov:
From my window screens, I could spot Angelo Bruno and Davina in the courtyard having a nice time. I was jealous, because I was supposed to be the one holding her hand, smiling at her in that manner, and not Bruno, as it was now the case. I wonder what they were talking about that made them laugh in that way.
I tried to forget about them and concentrate on some other stuffs, but there was no way I could focus. I guess Davina was the only thing coming to my mind. Since I couldn't do other stuffs, it's best I meet her and apologise to her. We won't start our first day of being married in this state!
"Hello, can I join you guys?" I asked, not wanting to create more tension. Davina gazed at me for a second, and shifted her gaze back to the syrup brown table, where her cup of coffee laid on.
"Bruno, can you please excuse us? I'd love to communicate with my wife." I said to Bruno which he scoffed. Yes, I wanted to talk to my wife, we were now legally married, so I could use that on her.
"Sure!" Angelo said teasingly getting up from his chair.
"Why are you sitting? Did I give you permission to sit next to me?" She asked, making use of an authoritative tone. I guess she still took me for her student. Well, she would have to play it low now. Course I'm now the master.
"I know you are angry after all that transpired, in there. But I want you to know that I'm sorry, and I did not mean for things to happen this way. Please forgive me." I sincerely declared.
"I just can't believe all this while you've been playing with my nerves? How dare you treat a human that way? Is it because you are a mafia boss?" she asked nervously. Damn, it was getting worse than I thought. I wasn't expecting her to take things this far.
"If you are looking for whom to blame, then you should blame love. It's because of love that I did all this, do you get me?" I thought maybe telling her the truth was going to make her see things from my perspective.
"You know what, I just want to be left alone." She said to me,
I couldn't allow her alone, knowing fully I was the reason why she was in this state. I had intentions of presenting the area to her, if I propose it to her, maybe it might calm down her nerves.
"Please let's visit the house, I'm begging you," I said
Whoa, I was literally begging a woman, me of all people. Love really does wonders. Who will have thought?
"Five minutes, not more than that." She said coldly.
I held Davina's hands in mine and we walked around so I could present to her the whole house. I started by the kitchen; I call that the powerhouse. Next, we visited the second living room, this is where Nonna loved passing her time. I then took her to the study room, where she could prepare her lectures before the class; even though I didn't want her to continue teaching as my wife. We continued to the courtyard, where I usually sit, and allowed the fresh air to heat my warm body. Next, we landed at the parking lot, where all our cars were packed. From her facial expression, she was impressed seeing all the cars the Cassano family possessed. In Italian tradition, your wealth was noted according to the kind of cars you ride in. We settled just for the most expensive ones; Ferrari, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Bentley … Just to name a few. We all had them packed in our parking lot.
"I heard the Cassano family had a lot of riches and wealth to their name. But this is way more outrageous." Davina declared.
"We work hard for our money, and we equally spend it hard. You know the saying; he who works hard, spends hard." I replied to her comment, keeping my good mood, since getting on her bad side earlier i made it known to myself to try every way possible to make her forget the incident caused by Massino's yapping.
"Enough of the parking lot. Let's get to our room now." I said, holding her hand.
"Welcome to our room," I said, gazing at her.
"And am I supposed to say thanks?" She smirked.
"Whatever! Have a seat. I'll have the maid prepare you something to eat or will you have dinner with the rest of my family?" I asked, just to be sure of what she wanted.
"I'll have dinner with your family. I mean, isn't that what a married lady is supposed to do? Have meals with her family-in-law."
"Good, I love your accent. Don't bother, I'll teach you Italian soon, I'm sure you are going to love it." I chuckled, just to bring the tension down.
******
At dinner, everyone was present, including Massino, though I didn't want to have him by my side. He was one of the last people I wanted to see till the end of today, considering the scandal he almost caused.
"È bello avervi tutti a tavola." Nonna Giulia mentioned after everyone sat at table.
"Grazie nonna." The crowd replied in unison, except Davina. It wasn't her fault, she doesn't speak Italian so I totally understand her.
While eating, nonna gently slammed the table with her fists, requesting everyone's attention. This made Davina slowly gasp, and part her lips. I'm sure she wasn't expecting nonna to react that way, but it was her attitude; using force to get whatever she wanted. She succeeded in having our attention as we all faced her. Then she cleared her throat and began.
"Per quanto riguarda il tuo matrimonio cerimonia, ho invitato la maggior parte dei miei amici. Sarà una grande cerimonia." Nonna said.
This is one thing I disliked about nonna. She always wanted things to be done her way. Even after I told her I wanted a normal marriage ceremony. She still went ahead, inviting most of her friends. I wonder when she's going to learn to respect people's choices.
"Avresti dovuto rispettare la mia scelta, nonna." I let out.
"Siamo una delle famiglie più numerose della città, È normale che richieda una grande cerebrazione." Nonna let out angrily, I could see this through her fist.
"Non disturbare la nonna, sta cercando di nascondere il suo matrimonio a certe persone," Vito Massino said, meaning, I was trying to hide away my marriage from the public.
On one hand, he was correct, that's because I didn't want the campus to be aware of my marriage to our professor. Considering the influence our family had, I didn't want her name to be tarnished, given that I was the one who forced her into this.
"What's wrong, why are you guys arguing? Is there a problem, Vincenzo?" Davina seemed worried.
"No, my child, there's no problem. You should concentrate on your meal, and prepare for your marriage to my grandson." Nonna smiled at her.
"Okay, Nonna." She replied, shifting her gaze back to her plate of panzanella.
Three days later……
The awaited ceremony was finally here. For sure, nonna had invited most of her friends, including distant family. I could see a wide range of familiar and unknown faces in the courtyard. I did not invite a friend from school, nor did I invite a professor. The only one present was Massino, which was by the way nowhere to be found. I wonder what the i***t was doing this time around.
The area reserved for our ceremony faced the breathtaking sunset. At the end of each seated aisle, I scented candles hung from the n***d trees, branches spread down the aisle as white flowers. Great job my nonna and her sta carried out.
While still scanning the environment, I witnessed someone at the end of the hall approaching me. His face was invisible considering the multi-coloured shades which made it impossible to glance at his face. I only managed to see his clothes; he was clothed in black trousers, a lemon-green shirt, a cream hat, and brown brogues. He looked elegant, I must confess. I bet the person approaching me was Italian. This was from his hat, he wore it the way Italians wore them.
"Hello," The man said. But I remarked his voice.
"Alejandro, is that you?" I asked to be sure.
"Yes, it's me. I'm still alive, as you can see." he nonchalantly smiled.
"Damn, long time no see. Hope you are doing good?" I asked, forcing a smile on my face.
"As you can see for yourself, I'm doing great," he replied.
Alejandro Cassano was the godson of my late father. He ran away from the house when dad made me the mafia boss of our family. I don't know if his going away was triggered by my new position in the family affairs or not, but the only thing I knew was that he couldn't be trusted.
