Lena’s POV
After work I decided to meet Lucy up for lunch. She was going on a holiday to see her family back home so we decided to hang out before she leaves.
“Have you made a decision?” Lucy asks.
“Yes,” I say. I do not think I doing it. You were right—I don’t think I can do it.”
“Although he offered to pay double the initial amount.” I told her almost immediately.
“And you refused?” Lucy asked in shook.
I ended up telling her everything and how the baby would be biologically mine.
She places her hand over mine. “We will find another way to get the money.”
It has been a week since my meeting with Ethan, but I’ve been thinking about it constantly. Add that on top of my worries about my school and I feel like I’m going crazy.
I nod. “Hey. Wait—what time is it?” I asked
“Two-thirty,” Lucy says, taking a sip of her coffee.
I stand. “I have to go. I work at five.”
“I’ll take you,” Lucy says.
“No, thank you. I could use the walk.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow before I leave.”
I say bye to Lucy and make my way out of the cafe. When I get to my apartment, I immediately took a shower and got ready for work.
After a long day at work, I returned home to take a much needed rest.I step a foot inside my apartment, grateful for the quiet.
**********
I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing, I did not want to answer but I answered on the third ring after seeing it was a call from Ethan,he notified me that he was at my door.
I pushed myself out of the bed and walk to the door, my eyes still heavy sleep as I have not slept well last night . I opened the door whilst rubbing my eyes to see Ethan leaning by the doorway.
"Good morning Lena,”He greeted me with a smile and a wave.
"Good morning", i greeted back moving out of the way so he can let himself in.
“Please have a seat,” i said to Ethan whilst making myself look more presentable.
Ethan sat down why i stood looking at him with my hands behind my back. I touched the dress i was wearing and wiped my face to look more presentable.
I walked behind him, trying to rub off the drool by my lips, and checking my breath.
I did not sleep early last night as i has spent the night still thinking about the proposal. Although i had made up my mind to do it I still had to weigh the pros and cons of my situation and how it would affect my future. I later realized this could be the opportunity i had been waiting for.
“What brings you here,” i asked him.
But he kept quiet scanning my small apartment.
“What are you doing here?” I ask again, both annoyed and nervous. He came to find me at my home—this is a violation of my privacy. He should have called before appearing at my doorstep.
“I have not heard back from you so i came to check if you have chickened out of this,”. Ethan responded. You did not call or text me.”
“I have thought it and my answer is no.” I answered.
“Why?” he asks calmly.
“This is a pregnancy—a baby—you want me to give you, Ethan. That’s something big. I can’t do it—I’m sorry—but you should look for someone else.”
He doesn’t say anything for a moment. “How much money do you want? Is $200,000 not enough money for you?i can add more. I can even bring your family here and give your father the best treatment. Just say the word.”
“Why would you pay more when you can get someone else for a much lower price?”
He pauses for a moment, staring at me intently. “Money isn’t a problem. I don’t want just any woman to carry my baby, Lena, and I don’t think you understand that.
Why would you pay more when you can get someone else for a much lower price?”
He sighs impatiently. “What matters right now is that money isn’t a problem for me. I want someone decent and clean to carry my child, and you are that person. Is that so hard to understand?”
“I don’t know, okay?” I sit, trying to wrap my head around this conversation. “This isn’t easy.”
“I know you just met me, and I know you probably don’t trust me, but I’m serious about this. I want a baby and I want you to carry it.”
I stare into his mesmerizing blue eyes frozen.
Could I really do this? It’s nine months of my life; nine months carrying a baby I have to give away in the end.
I shake my head. “You don’t understand. What do I do after all of this is over? I can’t give up everything in my life.”
Ethan pulls something out of his coat pocket, and it takes me a minute to realize it’s a checkbook and pen. He scrawls something on it. “This will be yours right now and the moment you sign the contract I will triple the amount to $500,000.”
I glance down at the number on the check and my eyes widen. “One-hundred-and-fifty-thousand dollars? Ethan, this is too much.”
It’s only the beginning, Lena. Trust me: you won’t regret doing this.”
“If I say yes—”
“You’ll stop working today and you will sign the contract tomorrow and begin the screening tomorrow.”
“I won’t stop going to school.”
He nods. “We can work around your schedule. We can even get you enrolled next week into your program.”
“I would also like to keep working.” He’s already shaking his head, but I continue anyway. “I have bills to pay.”
“I’ll pay them. If you need a job after giving birth I will sort you out. Trust me.”
Nine months is a long time and I will have a lot in place by then.
I sigh, wishing the anxiety away. “I’ll do it.”
“Thank you, Lena.” He smiles, and even though I’m nervous, a jolt rushes through me as his blue eyes meet mine.
“Okay then, it’s official. I just need to call my lawyers so they draft up the proposal.” Ethan said to me.”kindly meet me up at my office tomorrow to discuss and finalize the details of the contract.
