Chapter 4
The river turned out to be more like a stream due to the lack of rain recently. It took longer than expected for the boys to boil enough water for the next leg of their trip. It was nearly midnight before they finished.
Robbie checked the Jeep’s fluids after he emptied the gas can into the tank. “This will get us to Corpus.”
Ronnie stretched out on his bedroll. “Maybe we should take a run into Beeville while we’re so close. The lepers there don’t seem to be driving cars and using gas.”
Robbie sighed. “They can still shoot though. Might not like us stealing their gas whether they use it or not. Or maybe just not like us being there. Might not be able to make it to Corpus if we go to Beeville and don’t get gas.”
“Always tough decisions! So, on to Corpus then?”
