Chapter 15
The next morning, Robbie heard the jingling of keys. He’d been awake for an hour, just lying on the bed thinking about the coming day. The mayor told him that two teams of men would visit Port Lavaca, Edna, Cuero, Yoakum, and Refugio. Robbie’s route was out Highway 59 to Goliad.
Mayor Rodriguez liked Robbie’s idea of flying the American flag on the vehicles. He instructed the chief to locate some for the scout vehicles, but since they had too many police cars, the flag would be painted on them.
Robbie stood up when the cell door opened. The officer actually smiled at him. Robbie responded with a “good morning.”
“And the same to you.”
He nodded and followed him to Hayes’s office.
The chief looked up when Robbie came in. “Have a seat.”
