Only that I couldn’t remember the details of that night.
My memory felt like a blur and anytime I tried so hard to picture the places we went to, it’d feel like a hallucination.
I’d thought this was some form of jet lag.
Ever since my hangout with Kevin, I had noticed myself thinking of my mom more than usual.
When I’d get around her, I’d find myself relaxing more than usual. It confused me. Maybe my hormones were mistaking her for him.
“Nolan, are you even listening to me?”
That wasn’t the case right now though.
I blinked a couple times, bringing myself back from my little mind field trip. I looked up to see my mom, staring down at me with a mix of concern and frustration.
“You didn’t hear anything I just said”, she scoffed.
“I so did”, I lied confidently, crossing my arms and leaning back against the couch.
“Oh really? Really?”, she chuckled, her grin growing wider. “Come on…what did I just say?”
I opened my mouth to spout a random topic but the words got hooked in my throat. She threw me a fake smile, knowing I had nothing to say. Rolling my eyes, I looked away.
“You’re so annoying”, I mumbled.
“What was that?”
“Nothing”, came my immediate response.
She was silent for a moment before letting out a soft breath.
“I enrolled you in Silver Lake Academy”
Silver Lake?
That was Kevin’s school. He’d mentioned it in passing a while back.
My head snapped in her direction.
Now, I wasn’t a fan of school. I hated the educational system in general. However, being enrolled in Silver Lake would mean I’d get to see Kevin everyday.
That wasn’t something I’d fight against.
I nodded, acknowledging her statement.
••••
I hated first days.
I hated being the new girl.
When my mom told me I’d be transferring to Silver Lake, she forgot to mention the part where I’d have to wear a stupid uniform. Imagine my surprise when she delivered the horrendous, jail like attire to my bedroom.
The colors weren’t too bad. The blazer was navy blue with a matching skirt and a regular white shirt and a silver tie which I mentally threatened my subconscious to not wear. Who wears silver ties?
When I broke the news to Kevin, he was happy.
He picked me up and kissed my cheek a couple of times but after that for a split second, his mood changed.
The energy around him just became unbearable before he excused himself saying he didn’t feel too well.
On the bright side, Kevin also said the uniforms were flexible.
Accessorizing!!!
I sat in the principal’s office taking in the neat, pristine surroundings- from the mahogany desk to matching shelves. There was a glass showcase displaying golden trophies by the wall, several medals hanging off it too.
By the opposite side of the room, a notice board hung with papers on it. Probably school events or schedules.
However, the smell. A subtle scent lingered in the air. I didn’t hate it, it just was strong enough to overpower the citrus scented air freshener.
“Nolan Roberts”
I turned to the man seated in front of me. He had a stern look on his face and the glasses perched on his nose only made him look scarier. He had a full beard and bushy eyebrows as well.
“Welcome to Silver Lake Academy Miss Roberts”, he started, his voice deep. “I’m your principal, Mr. David”, he introduced himself.
“As you must know, Silver Lake is one of the top private schools in the country, ranking third in sports education. We don’t usually accept mid term transfers”, Mr. David paused, his gaze fixed on me.
I gripped my bag tighter, almost shrinking under his piercing gaze.
“Exceptions are necessary sometimes”, he continued, though his voice carried no trace of emotion. He seemed to be assessing my soul from how hard he was staring at me.
He cleared his throat, grabbed a huge book from his side and placed it in front of me with a thud.
“That’s all you’d need to know about Silver Lake Academy”, he begins to round up. “Your class schedules have been handed to the receptionist just outside my office. Do endeavor to pick it up” he paused.
“Do you have any questions?”
I had a several. One being the individual that opted for silver ties.
I opened my mouth to say something but he quickly cut me off.
“Enjoy the rest of your day Miss Roberts”, he drawled, bringing our conversation to an end.
His face betrayed no emotion-only this unnerving, off-putting stare.
This school was weird already.
