EVELYN
I didn’t understand what had just happened. I didn’t understand any of it.
Why had Damien rejected me? Why?
Why had he looked at me as if I were a stranger, after telling me for eight years that I was the only woman he wanted? After telling me for eight years that I would belong to him forever? Why had he called me desperate? What had changed?
My chest tightened slightly.
I remembered all those moments when he’d held my face in his hands and told me I was beautiful. I have everything he could ever want in a woman. “You’re the only woman I’ll ever want. Stop worrying about what people say about your body. One day you’ll stand by my side as my Luna.”
Hang on a minute. Had he been lying to me for eight bloody years?
A sharp pain shot through my stomach. I gasped for breath and pressed my hand against my stomach. I tried to ease the pain. My body was already begging me to stop, but my heart wasn’t ready to let go yet.
Not yet.
Slowly, I pushed myself up off the floor.
“Evelyn, stay down…,” warned Elder Gwen.
I ignored him. I scrambled to my feet. My legs were shaking violently, and my body was screaming in protest, but I stood up. I staggered and pressed a hand against my side, where the blood was soaking through my blue dress.
My legs were shaking beneath me. I could barely stand, but I forced myself to stay upright.
I looked at Damien. He was still standing next to Seraphina – the woman he’d chosen over me. The woman standing exactly where I’d always dreamed of standing.
“Damien…”, my voice sounded so weak.
His gaze met mine. And for a moment, I thought I saw something in his eyes. As if he’d remembered everything we’d been through. Or something else that looked like remorse.
“What is it now, Evelyn?” The coldness in his voice hurt more than the pain I was currently enduring.
I took a steady breath. And looked him straight in the eyes. “Why?”
“Why what?” he retorted immediately.
“Why did you do this to me? I don’t understand what I’ve done to you. I really don’t understand,” I whispered, wiping the tears from my cheeks, but they kept flowing.
I continued: “Eight years, Damien. Eight years in which I’ve loved you. Eight years during which I stood by your side. Eight years during which I believed every word you said to me.”
He said nothing.
And what did you expect from him, anyway?
“I stayed with you when you had nothing. I believed in you when no one else did. I stood by your side when people laughed at your dreams. And yesterday …” My voice broke.
“Yesterday I donated my kidney to your mother. Do you know what it means to give away a part of your life? Just out of love? Do you know that?”
I felt silence fall. But I didn’t care.
The king, who had been standing some distance away from me, suddenly looked at me in surprise. As if he couldn’t believe it.
But I didn’t notice. All my attention was on Damien. “I donated my kidney to your mother because I loved her. Because I wanted her to live, Damien.” I took a shaky breath. “I didn’t think of myself. I didn’t think of the pain. I just wanted to save her. My mother-in-law’s life.”
I continued: “When I woke up on the operating table yesterday, I believed that everything would finally be different. I thought you’d finally keep your promise.”
Damien’s face remained impassive.
“I thought today I’d become your Luna.” I looked at Seraphina with pure hatred. “Instead, I had to watch as you chose her.”
“Evelyn,” Damien shouted at me.
“Don’t call me by my name.” I shook my head. “You asked me to tell you why I’m angry. So let me tell you the truth.”
Damien sighed. “I never asked you to donate your kidney to my mother. I didn’t force you to do it, Evelyn.”
My heart broke instantly as the words left his mouth. I couldn’t believe he had the nerve to speak to me like that. “I did it because I love you, Damien.”
“Right, listen to me,” I said, stepping closer to touch him, but he pushed me away. “Do I sound desperate? I’m sorry, please forgive me. I didn’t do it so that you’d owe me a marriage. I did it because I believe in us,” I said, convinced that there was still hope for us.
“Evelyn, it’s over,” he said. “You have to accept that.”
Those three words almost brought me to my knees. “How am I supposed to accept that?” I cried. “Please take me back. I’m ready to forget what happened and move on with you, my love. Don’t do this. Remember that I saved your mother’s life. ”
My words echoed through the corridor; I was already suffering. And I just wanted all this drama to stop. I wanted us to get back together.
I noticed that Seraphina was feeling uncomfortable. Even Damien’s face had hardened.
“And I’m grateful that my mother survived,” said Damien.
“Grateful?” I stared at him in disbelief. “You’re grateful?”
“Yes.” His voice sounded emotionless. “But that doesn’t mean I have to marry you.”
“I never said that,” I whispered. “But Damien, we can wait for the right time. Please come back to me.”
“Then stop pretending you sacrificed your kidney for a ring.”
My heart broke. “I sacrificed it because I loved you!” For the first time, my voice completely broke. “I loved you, Damien. I loved you more than myself. Please listen to me.”
I took another step towards him. “But you made me feel like I was nothing.” I couldn’t look at him any longer, so I lowered my gaze to the floor. “You made me feel ashamed of the body I was born with. You insulted me. You convinced me that you’d finally be proud of me if only I became thinner, prettier and better.”
“Enough.” The King finally spoke. His voice was calm, yet the whole hall fell silent.
Damien turned to him and tried to look innocent. But the King wasn’t looking at him. Instead, his gaze wandered to the bloodstain on my dress.
The King remained silent. Then he looked at him with a strange calmness. “She’s your ex. As you said.”
“Yes.”
“She donated a kidney to your mother. And you threw her out of my ceremony whilst she was still recovering?”
“Your Majesty –”
The King raised his hand. And Damien fell silent at once.
“If she means nothing to you …”, his voice grew colder, “then why are you so afraid of what will happen to her next?”
I noticed Damien’s face go pale. He couldn’t answer.
Then I felt a stabbing pain. I could barely hear the rest. The pain in my stomach suddenly became unbearable. I could no longer control it. I gasped for breath and clutched at my dress. I looked down at my legs and saw that I was bleeding more heavily. My vision blurred. I tried to take another step. But suddenly my legs would no longer obey me. I felt myself falling to the floor.
“Evelyn!”
Someone called my name.
All I was aware of was a pair of strong arms catching me before I hit the floor.
The last thing I heard was the King’s voice.
“Get the doctor. Immediately.”
