EVELYN
"...Was any of it real?"
The question left my lips in nothing more than a whisper. I wasn't sure if I wanted him to answer. I wasn't sure my heart could survive whatever came out of his mouth.
Damien looked at me for a long moment, as though my words had stirred something darker inside him.
Finally, he spoke. "No."
That one single word shattered eight years of my life. I felt the air in my lungs leave, making it almost impossible to breathe. I stared at him, waiting for him to laugh and tell me it was a joke. He didn't.
"I don't know what made you think we'd end up together, Evelyn."
I shook my head slowly. "You... you promised me."
"I made a lot of promises," he said reluctantly. Like he didn't give a care about how much damage those words would cause to me.
"You told me I was the only woman you'd ever love."
He laughed so hard he held his stomach. "Hold on," he paused, looking at me. "And you actually believed that? I never knew you're this delusional."
His words struck me harder than any slap ever could.
"No..." I whispered, tears blurring my vision. "No, Damien... don't do this."
He sighed, as though this conversation was exhausting him. "Let's stop pretending. I never saw a future with you."
I took a step toward him. I wanted to touch him, to hold his hand into mine and let him know how much I still cared for him. Maybe if I did, he'd realize himself. He'd shake his head and tell me "oh, Evelyn, you should know already this is just a joke. I just want to see how strong your feelings are for me, but now I can see, none of these is real," and I was ready to let it go. I didn't mind, I was ready to forgive him and look past it as long as he was mine... alone.
My hands had barely reached his when he pulled away. "Don't you dare touch me."
"Damien... it's me." I couldn't hold back the tears in my eyes, so I let it fall. Maybe if he sees my tears, he'd understand much better, and he'll definitely forgive me. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying exactly what you should've realized years ago."
His eyes slowly traveled over me. From my tear-stained face, to my trembling hands, to the curves I'd spent years trying to hide.
Then he looked back into my eyes. "Tell me honestly, Evelyn. What made you think a future Alpha would choose someone like you?"
As if the air itself wanted this moment of humiliation, it carried his voice around the hall so that everyone would hear. People kept gasping, even those that snorted as if they had waited so long for him to tell me that.
At this point, it felt as though my soul had just left my body.
"I..." My voice failed me. "I loved you."
His expression didn't change. "That was your mistake."
"You don't mean that, Damien." I shook my head, refusing to believe what he had just said. "You're joking, right? This is just your way of trying to hurt me. But it's..."
"Don't you get it?!" He barked. "I don't, and have never loved you, so get that at the back of your skull."
If I have ever felt pained in my entire life, none was to be compared with this. It felt as though someone was squeezing my heart from the back, dragging it so hard I could feel live leaving my body with every breath I took.
At this point, I knew there was nothing I could do to win him back, nothing I could say to change his mind from whatever hatred he has for me.
The fact that I had stupidly given out my kidney for his mother. I was so blinded by loving, thinking that this one very act would make him see me more as a gold, more as the woman after his heart. I was wrong.
"Your mother..." I choked. "...I loved your mother like she was my own. I..." I placed a shaking hand over the bandage hidden beneath my dress. "I gave her my kidney. Yesterday, I almost died for your family."
Then I looked at him despite the tears in my eyes, my face forming a frown that had nothing to do with his rejection, but the fact that I had taken that huge risk for his sake.
"Is this how you pay me now? Spit to my face that I am not enough for you after everything!" I didn't let the tears stop me. "What haven't I done for you, Damien? What? That you could look at me like I'm a piece of rag and nothing more?"
His face remained cold, as though I had spent the last thirty seconds talking to myself and not him. Then he said the words that would haunt me for the rest of my life.
"You actually thought donating your kidney would make me marry you?" I was speechless, even the hall went still. "I never asked you to do it, Evelyn. You chose to give her your kidney and honestly, we both appreciate it. Honestly. So don't stand here expecting me to repay you with marriage because you decided to play the hero."
I stared at him, even more shocked than I was. This was the man I had given my everything to. The man who made me feel more human than I had ever felt. The man I had spent eight years of my life believing, loving, and hoping to spend the rest of my life with. This... was the man... I had given out half my life to his mother for his sake. And this... this is how he could repay me?
"I knew from the first day that you wanted attention," he added. "You wanted someone to notice you, so I gave you attention." He looked at me as though I were nothing. "As far as I was concerned, you were just... there. I never planned to make you my Luna, I never intended to spend my life with you. I was simply waiting for the right woman."
Seraphine slipped her hand into his. She smiled sweetly before looking at him.
"Damien." Her voice was gentle. "Everyone's waiting."
Then she glanced at me for barely a second.
"Don't waste any more time on someone who doesn't belong in our future."
Without hesitation, and without saying anymore words, he simply turned his back on me and walked away with her. I watched them climb the stage together, tears filling my eyes and rolling down my cheeks.
"Elder Gwen," Damien said. "I'm ready."
The elder smiled warmly before raising his staff.
"Future Alpha Damien Blackwood..." His voice echoed proudly through the hall. "Do you accept Seraphina Ashford as your Luna, your equal, and your partner before this pack?"
"I do." He said without a second of hesitation.
"And Seraphina Ashford..." He turned to her. "Do you accept Damien Blackwood as your Alpha, your mate, and the man you will stand beside for the rest of your life?"
She smiled lovingly at him. "I do."
People rose to their feet, clapping their hands. While I stood there, broken, watching as everything unfold right in front of me.
Then Mrs. Blackwood walked onto the stage. Seeing her gave me a glimmer of hope. She knew I was the one who saved her, and if she sees another woman beside her son, she'd definitely speak for me.
She walked to Seraphina. Instead of looking at me, she took Seraphina's hands into hers, letting a warm smile play across her face.
"Welcome to the family," she said, her eyes glistening with happiness. "I've waited a very long time for this day."
Waited? The word echoed inside my head. What did she mean? Had she always wanted Seraphina? Did everyone know? Was I... the only fool who didn't?
As if the crowd wanted to clear my confusion, they began to whisper.
"I told you she was never Luna material."
"Look at Seraphina, that's what an Alpha's Luna should look like."
"Did Evelyn really think someone her size would become Luna?"
"I've never understood what Damien saw in her."
"He never saw anything, everyone knew he'd end up with Seraphina."
Every insecurity I'd buried for years came rushing back. Maybe they were right, maybe I had been fooling myself all along.
Damien stepped forward once more. His voice was loud enough for everyone to hear.
"From this day forward..." He looked directly at me. "...Evelyn Hart has no place in the Blackwood Pack. Whatever relationship people believed we had... ends today. You are no longer welcome here."
His eyes hardened. "Guards." Two warriors immediately stepped forward. "Escort her outside."
"No. No. No, please don't!"
One grabbed my arm forcefully and I felt pain vibrate through my side.
"Please..." My voice was barely audible. "I just had surgery..."
They didn't even listen to me, they kept dragging me toward the massive doors. I couldn't even keep up, the pain was just too much and it felt my skin was tearing apart.
I stumbled and fell to one knee. The warrior yanked me back to my feet without mercy.
"I don't have the entire time in the world, young lady." He snapped. "Keep walking."
We were barely steps away from the door when it flew open, and with a dangerous force, the guard shoved me outside.
I lost my balance completely, my body hit the stone steps with a sickening thud. I cried so loud as pain exploded through my abdomen.
At that exact moment, the sound of engines filled the air. Seven black luxury SUVs rolled through the gates in perfect formation.
The guards immediately stood straight, almost every elder in the building hurried outside, as though they already knew whoever it was. The warriors outside immediately lowered his head.
The convoy came to a stop. One of the guards rushed to open the rear door of the first vehicle. Polished black shoes touched the ground, and a tall man stepped out, dressed in an impeccably tailored black coat that seemed to command authority with every stride.
The silence that fell was one I had never experienced before, even the air seemed to stand still, fearing to make a single sound. No one dared to speak, every faces faced the ground and I couldn't help but wonder who... and why everyone feared this man.
He walked towards the entrance, stopping before me. In a deep voice that almost knitted the breath out of me, he said.
"Who..." His sharp gaze settled on me, crumpled on the floor with tears still staining my face. "...is the woman crying outside my ceremony?"
