Chapter6

EVELYN The last thing I remembered was the King’s voice. “Get the doctor. Immediately.” Then everything went black. When I finally opened my eyes again, the first thing I felt was pain. A very sharp pain, the likes of which I’d never felt in my entire life. And all because of love. On top of that, a dull ache spread through my stomach, making it difficult for me to move. Slowly, I blinked my eyes. But I couldn’t see clearly … And as soon as my sight returned, the first thing I wanted to see was Damien. Yes, you heard that right. I can’t bear the thought of leaving him for another woman who wouldn’t make any sacrifices for him. But I noticed something else. I didn’t recognise the room I was in. This wasn’t the Blackwood pack. The walls were white, the bed beneath me was soft, and there was a large window opposite me. I tried to sit up. But the pain wouldn’t let me. I immediately gasped for breath and fell back onto the pillow. Then I heard a voice. “You shouldn’t move just yet.” I turned my head to see who it was. There, standing beside the bed I was lying on, was a man in a white coat. “Who are you?” I asked, trying to sit up. “My name is Dr Rowan Hale. I am the King’s personal physician,” he said. Wait a minute. Had I just heard ‘the King’s personal physician’? My heart skipped a beat as I remembered the ceremony. I remembered Damien’s harsh words to me. I remembered how my body and my dress were soaked in my own blood. And then I remembered the King. I looked down at my body. “What’s happened to me?” I asked. “You’ve lost a lot of blood,” he said. My fingers clenched around the blanket. “Am I… still with the Blackwood pack?” “No.” I stared at him. I tried to make sense of it all, but I couldn’t. “Where am I, then?” “In the Crescent Crown territory,” he said. I froze. “What???” My eyes widened. “You mean the King’s territory?” He nodded. “His Majesty ordered that you be brought here immediately. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be alive.” I didn’t know what to say. Once again, I couldn’t think straight. Why would the King do such a thing? I’d lied to him. I’d protected the people who’d hurt me so badly. I wasn’t important to anyone. Seriously, I really wanted to know why the King had brought me here. So I asked, “Why?” Dr Rowan looked at me with a gentle gaze. Like a man who doesn’t want to say any more than he’s been asked. “Because you needed treatment.” That wasn’t what I wanted to hear. I calmly looked away. Because nobody had cared enough about me to ask if I was all right. Not Damien. Not his mother. Suddenly, the door opened. I froze. I heard the heavy footsteps entering the room I was in. I didn’t need to look up to know who it was. It was the King. Alexandru Draven. He stopped beside the bed. His cold gaze rested on me. “How are you?” I swallowed. “I’m fine, Your Majesty.” Dr Rowan’s voice piped up immediately. “She’s not well, Your Majesty.” The King looked at him in confusion. “Explain that,” he said. “She needs rest. Her wound has reopened, and she’s lost a lot of blood. She must avoid stress and any physical exertion.” The King nodded and turned his gaze back to me. “You’ve heard him.” I nodded. “Yes, Your Majesty.” “Good.” He turned to leave. I raised my head, only to stare at his back. Or should I say: to watch him walk away. But something prompted me to speak up. “Your Majesty.” He stopped. But he didn’t turn round to face me. I hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Why did you bring me here?” He turned round slowly. His expression remained inscrutable. “Because you were bleeding,” he said. “Your Majesty. That’s not what I mean.” He froze briefly. His eyes narrowed slightly. “What do you mean, then?” I lowered my gaze. So as not to look into his eyes before I voiced what was going through my mind. “Why did it matter to you?” For a few seconds, he said nothing. He just looked at me. Then he replied in a calm voice. “It didn’t.” My heart sank. Yes. I’d expected to hear something else, but … He continued: “I saw an injured woman being treated like rubbish during a ceremony. I intervened because it was my duty as king.” I looked at him. His eyes were full of pity. But I had to ask: “So you have no pity for me?” “No.” His answer came without hesitation. “I have no pity for weak people.” Something about his words struck me. But then he added: “And I will not allow people under my protection to be treated badly.” I stared at him, not understanding what he meant. “Under your protection?” “Yes.” He looked at Dr Rowan. “Make sure she gets everything she needs.” Then he turned back to me. And smiled. “And make sure no one disturbs her.” One thing was clear: I couldn’t understand this man. He was cold. And sometimes his words were harsh. And yet he had saved me. Just as he was about to leave, he stopped. He turned round and looked at me. “Evelyn.” I looked up. “You’ll stay here until you’re well again.” My heart clenched. I can’t stay here. Not with the King. I have to go back to Damien and set things right. I can’t stay here and lose everything. “I can’t stay here, Your Majesty. I want to leave.” For a moment, his eyes said it all, then his mouth moved. “That wasn’t a request.” And then he walked out. I stared at the doorway. For the first time since Damien had broken my heart, I didn’t know what frightened me more. Returning to the man I’d loved for eight years … Or remaining under the protection of a king I knew nothing about.
