Chapter 5: Hunted Down by a Kitten

1849 Words
Ling Feng was inside a cave behind a waterfall, staring at a little "cat" outside. “How could I be this unlucky? How did I end up provoking such a monster! If it weren’t afraid of water, I would’ve met my maker again.” Ling Feng muttered to himself, racking his brain for a plan. Earlier that morning, Ling Feng had been heading out of the forest when he spotted this kitten. It lay on the grass, eyes closed, basking in the sunlight. Its snow‑white fur and tiny delicate appearance made Ling Feng completely forget he was in the Demon Beast Forest — a place where nothing was truly harmless. When Ling Feng stepped close and reached out to stroke its back, the kitten darted aside in an instant. It stood off to the side, glaring at Ling Feng with full‑on vigilance. Ling Feng’s heart sank. He had been far too careless. Clearly, he was still not used to life in this other world. Ling Feng kept his eyes locked on the kitten, bracing for a sudden attack, while slowly inching backward. He grumbled inwardly that Long Tian’s knowledge base was far too incomplete; there was no record of a beast with this creature’s aura. All too often, the things that look the least dangerous turn out to be the deadliest — and that truth held doubly true within this perilous Demon Beast Forest. As if to prove Ling Feng’s thought, the kitten conjured a fireball and hurled it straight at him. Ling Feng dodged the blast and immediately sprinted for his life. The fireball burned bright white, a clear sign of devastating power. Just as he feared, the fireball slammed into a tree and detonated violently, scorching all plant life within a five‑meter radius. “Damn, what a freakish kitten!” Ling Feng cursed, yet never slowed his pace as he bolted away. Still, the kitten was faster. It closed the gap, leaving only about eight meters between them. This won’t work, Ling Feng thought. I need a strategy. Trying to outmaneuver it won’t work — it’s smaller and more agile than me. I’ll have to use the terrain to my advantage. Ling Feng’s mind raced, calculating the optimal escape route. While running, he channeled battle qi to snap off branches, throwing obstacles in the kitten’s path. The Dragon‑Pride Art had been circulating non‑stop inside him ever since he obtained it, driven by the unique signals his extraordinary brain sent to his body. Ordinary practitioners could not multitask while cultivating the Dragon‑Pride Art. Even a slight movement would disrupt their cultivation, let alone fight or flee. Ling Feng, however, could split his focus effortlessly, handling multiple things all at once. Drawing on the power of the Dragon‑Pride Art, an idea struck him: could he channel this energy to his feet, just like internal kung‑fu, to boost his speed? He immediately routed his power toward his legs. At first he fumbled with how to channel and exert the force, but his sharp mind quickly figured out the knack. Gradually, his speed surged. His movement grew fluid and nimble; he leaped and weaved, darting through the treetops, steadily widening the distance from the kitten. Just when Ling Feng thought he had escaped for good, flames burst all over the kitten’s body. It let out a sharp “meow” and accelerated in hot pursuit. Ling Feng flinched at the blazing aura. The high‑pitched meow almost made him laugh. It sounded exactly like a normal cat’s cry — yet this creature was anything but cute. He found himself missing the cats back on Earth, how gentle and lovely they had been. The now‑blazing kitten gave Ling Feng no time for daydreams. He poured every drop of his battle qi into his desperate flight. This freakish cat could actually transform into a blazing form just like a fire phoenix. Was he really going to die burned to death by a tiny kitten? He let out a helpless chuckle, chiding himself for his random thoughts. It seemed there were downsides to his ability to multitask. Ling Feng was used to letting his mind wander while fleeing, yet all the while, his brain kept calculating every possible way to break free from this deadly predicament. “Water…” Ling Feng mumbled unconsciously. He remembered a waterfall nearby. He could test whether this fire cat feared water. Ling Feng knew clearly that failure meant another death. His battle qi was almost completely exhausted. By the time Ling Feng reached the edge of the waterfall, the flaming kitten was less than a meter behind him. Without hesitation, he gathered all his remaining battle qi in his legs and leaped toward the waterfall with every ounce of his strength. To his surprise, the kitten stopped at the bank and made no attempt to follow him through the water. “Haha, you’re afraid of water!” Ling Feng rejoiced inwardly. But the moment he relaxed, the kitten launched another fireball. It lacked the terrifying power of the previous blast, seemingly fired in a hurry, yet it flew far faster. Right as Ling Feng was about to dive behind the waterfall, the fireball caught up and slammed into his back. Ling Feng rushed through the falling water and found a cave roughly five meters deep hidden behind the waterfall—this was where he had been hiding earlier. He touched his back and felt a burnt hole in his clothes. He had been hit directly by a fireball, so why had he felt no pain at all? Had the waterfall doused the flame instantly? That couldn’t be right. His clothes were scorched and torn, yet his skin was completely unharmed. Ling Feng replayed the moment in his mind with his super brain and finally realized the truth: his body had absorbed the fireball the second it struck him. No wonder he had felt a subtle recovery in his body earlier, which he had mistaken for relief from escaping danger. Fortunately, this fireball was far weaker than the first one. His body’s automatic calculation told him his physical limits were fully saturated with fire elemental energy from this attack. If the kitten had unleashed its full-power fireball, he would have been severely burned instantly. Where did this bizarre ability to absorb elemental power come from? Ling Feng was filled with confusion. In truth, this unique skill came from his transcendent soul, not his physical body. Just as his soul could absorb soul energy during fusion, magic was merely another form of energy that his special soul could devour freely. There was no ordinary logic to explain this gift—after all, the protagonist was destined to be extraordinary from the very start. Ling Feng stared at the little cat lingering outside, silently praying that it would give up and leave him alone. He calmed down and observed his surroundings. The cave was about two meters high and over one meter wide, completely empty with no other exits. If he stepped out now, the kitten would immediately resume its chase. He couldn’t help but find the situation ridiculous. If anyone from Earth saw him being hunted relentlessly by a tiny cat, they would never believe it. Such a terrifying magical beast possessed the cute appearance and meow of an ordinary kitten. Ling Feng sat down and focused entirely on circulating his energy. The Proud Dragon Art raced rapidly through his veins. Outside, the kitten glared furiously at the human hiding in the cave. It had been peacefully basking in the sunlight before this human disturbed its rest. What angered it most was that its unmatched speed, which dominated this entire beast forest, had failed to catch this fleeing human. At first, the kitten had toyed with Ling Feng, holding back its full speed. But soon, it watched in shock as the human’s speed kept increasing, making it feel as if it had been mocked and played with. The kitten had no idea that Ling Feng was steadily creating and perfecting his own battle qi movement technique. Once the kitten unleashed its full speed, Ling Feng kept throwing obstacles in its path, preventing it from fully accelerating. Branches, debris, and eventually even the useless junk from his spatial pouch were all tossed behind him to slow the cat down. When they reached the open area surrounding the waterfall, the kitten had believed victory was certain. It sped forward with everything it had, ready to burn the annoying human to ashes. Just as it closed in for the kill, Ling Feng had suddenly leaped straight for the waterfall. As a pure fire‑attribute magical beast, the kitten dared not touch water. Water weakened its power, caused it immense discomfort, and terrified it deeply. Unwilling to follow into the water, the kitten had launched one final blazing fast fireball. It struck Ling Feng right before he vanished behind the waterfall. Yet to the kitten’s utter astonishment, the human emerged completely unharmed—and it could clearly sense its fire energy had been absorbed into his body. Now, watching Ling Feng calmly meditating inside the cave, the kitten grew even angrier. It swore it would catch this human and incinerate him completely. It paced restlessly by the waterfall for a long time. Seeing Ling Feng never move, it finally lay down on the ground, staring unblinkingly at the cave entrance, keeping strict watch. The two sides remained frozen in a silent stalemate. As time slowly passed, the Proud Dragon Art circulating inside Ling Feng’s body grew faster and stronger. He could feel he was on the verge of a breakthrough. After several full cycles of cultivation, his technique broke through the second layer and smoothly advanced into the third layer. Ling Feng quickly steadied his energy and stabilized his newly advanced realm. Once fully settled, he stood up and let out a long, relieved shout. “Amazing!” He now understood what ancient martial novels described. When your power is completely drained, continuing to cultivate instead of resting brings incredible progress. Breaking into the third layer of the Proud Dragon Art in such a short time was an enormous gain. Calculating his current round‑the‑clock cultivation speed and excluding recovery gaps, Ling Feng estimated he could reach the seventh layer in just three years. That was a feat no one in Long Clan history had ever achieved, except the clan’s founding ancestor. Even his grandfather Long Jianxin, after decades of cultivation, only stood at the seventh layer. Just as Ling Feng savored his massive improvement, he saw the kitten still staring fiercely into the cave. His loud shout had woken it up from its sunbathing nap. It would have continued sleeping peacefully if Ling Feng had stayed hidden. Ling Feng inwardly cursed the stubborn cat. Its determination to burn him to death was unbelievably strong. Helpless once again, he sat back down and began carefully planning his escape from this deadlock.
