Chapter 11: Home… or the Execution Ground?

2212 Words
Early the next morning, Ling Feng stood outside the grand gates of the Long Family Manor. It had been more than a year since he left. His appearance, temperament, and aura had completely changed. The guards standing on duty did not recognize him at all. “I need to enter and see Long Jue,” Ling Feng spoke calmly. However, the guards shook their heads coldly. “The master is not home.” Ling Feng fell silent. His original intention was simply to return home, settle down temporarily, and stabilize his current situation. After all, this place was once his home. He planned to enter the manor first no matter what. But instead of letting him in, the guards chased him away directly. “This is the Long Family residence. No outsiders are allowed. Leave at once!” Ling Feng felt helpless. He had never thought that one day he would be blocked from entering his own home. He looked straight at the guards and spoke in a low, firm tone. “I am Long Tian. This is my family. I am your Second Young Master. Open the gate immediately, or you will lose your position.” He decided to reveal his identity to resolve the trouble quickly. Unexpectedly, after hearing the name Long Tian, the guards let out mocking sneers. “Second Young Master? Everyone in the imperial city knows our Second Young Master died in the Magic Beast Forest more than a year ago. You might as well pretend to be the Eldest Young Master — at least he is still alive.” Ling Feng was stunned. Since entering the city yesterday, he had only bought a map and stayed at the Longxiang Inn. He had no idea news of his death had spread all across the imperial city. In his memory, the princess had used a hidden scheme to kill him secretly. Such a conspiracy should have been tightly covered. With the princess’s power and status, the truth should never have leaked out so quickly. Confused, Ling Feng frowned. “I’m dead? Who spread such nonsense? I’m clearly standing right here. Have you lost your mind?” The guard grew even more annoyed. Normally, anyone exposed for pretending to be a young master would panic and run away immediately. Yet this man refused to leave and continued insisting he was the Second Young Master. The guard knew the real Second Young Master very well. The old Long Tian was frivolous, lewd, and arrogant. The man standing before him had a calm aura, sharp eyes, and a steady temperament — completely different. Moreover, the real Second Young Master would never casually carry a cat on his shoulder. The guard’s patience ran thin. “I know exactly what our Second Young Master looks like. Stop pretending. If you continue pestering me, I will call the city guards and arrest you.” Ling Feng sighed inwardly. He had changed far too much in one year. Even his own father Long Jue might fail to recognize him, let alone ordinary guards. However, he knew there was a way to prove his identity. The Long Family had always been sparsely populated. Among the younger generation of this age, only Long Tian existed. No imposter could fake the unique memories only a true Long family member possessed. Ling Feng spoke again. “Go call my elder brother or my grandfather. They will recognize me and confirm my identity.” The guard’s expression turned icy. “Your elder brother? Your grandfather? The old master, the manor lord, and the Eldest Young Master are all out today. If you continue this absurd act, we will lock you in the cell ourselves.” Ling Feng felt strange. It was understandable for his father and elder brother to be outside, but his grandfather Long Jianxin almost never left the manor. The old man spent every day cultivating battle qi. Had he hit a cultivation bottleneck and gone out in seclusion? He asked curiously. “Where did Grandfather go? He rarely leaves the manor.” The guard was not surprised that the stranger knew the old master’s habits — everyone in the family knew that. What annoyed him was this person’s stubborn pretense. He gripped the hilt of his sword, his tone fierce and unfriendly. “I don’t know, and I won’t tell you! What does it have to do with you? Do not test my patience. Get lost!” Ling Feng finally grew irritated. He only wanted to return home briefly, show his face, and let everyone know that Long Tian was still alive. Yet he could not even pass through the front gate. Just as he was hesitating, a familiar figure walked out from inside the manor. “Uncle Fu!” The middle-aged steward paused in surprise. Only the two young masters of the Long Family would call him this way. He looked at Ling Feng carefully, confused. “Young sir… do I know you?” Ling Feng smiled gently. “Uncle Fu, it’s me. Long Tian.” “Long Tian?! Second Young Master?!” Long Fu’s eyes widened in shock. He quickly shook his head. “Impossible. Everyone knows the Second Young Master passed away in the Magic Beast Forest. You cannot be unaware of such big news. Leave quickly. I will not punish you for pretending.” Ling Feng did not waste more words. He directly spoke out the unique childhood memories only he and Uncle Fu shared, one after another quickly. “When I was eight, I stole all your fine wine and poured every drop into the well. When I was nine…” “Stop!” Long Fu instantly raised his hand to interrupt him, his face turning pale with shock. Some of these trivial old incidents could be investigated, but many details were known only to him and the Second Young Master. No outsider could possibly know them. Staring closely at Ling Feng’s unfamiliar face, Long Fu’s voice trembled. “Are you… really our Second Young Master?” He still could not believe it. The temperament, behavior, aura, and appearance of the person before him were completely different from the foolish, frivolous Second Young Master of the past. “Still don’t believe me? Then look at this.” Ling Feng stretched out one hand, condensing battle qi in the center of his palm. “The Azure Dragon Art?!” Ordinary people might fail to recognize this skill, but Long Fu knew it instantly. He was far too familiar with this unique family technique. “Do you believe me now?” Ling Feng withdrew his battle qi and let out a slow breath. “I do! I truly do!” Long Fu’s voice trembled with excitement. “Second Young Master, it is such a relief that you are alive. I shall report this to the master at once.” “Father was supposed to be out of the manor, was he not?” Ling Feng asked in confusion. “Right! I got carried away in my excitement and forgot. The master and everyone else are gone today. It has something to do with the princess — Oh no!” Long Fu suddenly cried out in alarm. “What? What is wrong?” “Because of what happened to you, the emperor will execute the princess and her companions today. Now that you have returned alive…” “Where are they? When will the execution happen?” Ling Feng cut him off sharply, unwilling to waste another second. He had hurried back precisely to prevent this disaster. The very worst‑case scenario he feared was unfolding right before him. “The arena. It will begin very soon. I fear we are already too late…” “The arena!” Without another word, Ling Feng leapt onto the rooftop with his light‑foot skill, bounding swiftly across tile after tile. Long Fu and the guards stared in utter shock. They had never seen anyone move like this. He soared across rooftops relying purely on battle qi, no magic required. Using battle qi for rooftop leaps was theoretically possible, yet almost no one could move with such effortless grace. Most warriors would smash the tiles when pushing off and crash through roofs upon landing. Such feats belonged only to Sword God‑ranked powerhouses. None of them could imagine a man in his early twenties reaching such a realm. All the townsfolk who caught sight of his speeding figure stood frozen, equally stunned. Ling Feng paid no mind to the commotion he caused. Every thought burned with one single goal: reach the arena and stop this unjust execution. The arena lay in the northern district of the imperial city, twenty kilometers away. Ling Feng pushed his speed to the limit, praying he would arrive in time. He silently cursed the enormous scale of the capital. The imperial palace stood directly in his path. Flying straight over it would draw attacks from the palace’s top experts, and he could not afford to waste time fighting them. He had to take a detour around the palace compound. Inside the massive arena built for fifty‑thousand spectators, fewer than one hundred people were present. Thousands of royal guards surrounded the entire perimeter. Four prisoners knelt upon the execution platform at the arena’s center: Princess Xuerou, Xueqing, Xin Lei, and Lin Weier. Princess Xuerou had never expected events to unfold so rapidly. Her own father had issued the execution order. The Long Family had even opposed the death sentence, arguing both sides shared blame and the princess did not deserve to die. Yet the emperor had remained unyielding. Only now did she truly understand how heavily the Long Family weighed in her father’s heart. Her bond with Long Jue ran deeper than blood ties between kin. She would die branded as the villain who had murdered Long Tian. Though the execution was not public, everyone present would keep the truth sealed away. Her name would forever carry this shameful crime. She once believed her father only tolerated Long Tian’s reckless acts out of fear of the Long Family’s military power. She had been wrong. He had indulged Long Tian, hoping the young man would carry on the Long Family line. The emperor regarded Long Jue as a brother closer than real kin. To him, Long Tian’s existence could matter more than his own daughter. When news arrived that his own daughter had orchestrated Long Tian’s death, his rage had been terrifying. She felt deep guilt for the three others dragged down alongside her, especially Xueqing. If she could turn back time, she would have slain Long Tian herself rather than bringing ruin to her friends. Standing beside the emperor, Long Jue spoke in a heavy voice. “Must this really happen?” “He brought this upon himself,” the emperor replied. “Everyone must answer for their deeds. Not even my own princess is exempt.” Long Jue was filled with remorse. “Many of Long Tian’s misdeeds were worthy of death. I spoiled him too much. None of this would have come to pass if I had reined him in.” “The Long Family has too few heirs. That is part of why I overlooked his behavior,” said the emperor. “I bear my share of fault as well. Still, Princess Xuerou’s punishment cannot be avoided. If I let this slide, how could I face you and the Long Family, should anyone dare harm your kin in the future?” Long Jue understood there was no room to change the emperor’s decision. The emperor acted out of guilt toward him. Deep in his own heart, Long Jue also burned with hatred for those who had caused Long Tian’s death. Otherwise, the moment he learned the truth, he would not have stormed the imperial palace and arrested Princess Xuerou, Xin Lei and Lin Weier. Back then, he had longed to slay them on the spot, yet he held back for the sake of his sworn brother, Emperor Lishi. He had already lost his son and knew that crushing grief. He would not wish the same agony to befall his brother. Long Jianxin and Long Yang stood nearby, listening to their exchange. They realized this was a dead‑end conflict no one could untangle. Though they resented the prisoners, they still believed death was too harsh a sentence. Bai Yun suffered most of all. His own daughter had been dragged into this disaster through no fault of her own. She was the most innocent victim here. Yet he and Long Jue were sworn brothers who had endured countless hardships side by side. He could only pray for time to slow down, dreading the moment his daughter would perish. The hour of execution arrived. The four prisoners were fastened firmly upon the execution block. At the executioner’s single word, the headsman beside them would swing his blade. “Carry out the execution!” The emperor and Bai Yun closed their eyes, unable to bear witnessing the scene. The headsman’s great axe sliced downward. At this fatal instant, a dragon’s roar echoed across the arena. Four streaks of golden light shot straight toward the headsman’s descending axe.
