Chapter 2: Am I a Ghost Now?

1810 Words
Ling Feng was drifting all over the place, genuinely drifting. After he lost consciousness from the car crash and regained his senses, he spotted a creature ahead. It looked and howled like a wolf, yet he knew it could not be any ordinary wolf he knew. As far as he was aware, there were no flying wolves on Earth, nor did any other wild beasts possess such an ability. Let him call this creature a wolf for the time being. It hovered in mid‑air with nothing to support its body, completely shattering everything Ling Feng knew about living creatures. Suddenly the wolf moved, flying straight toward Ling Feng. Ling Feng dodged instinctively, but he could not match its incredible speed. In the blink of an eye, the wolf was right in front of him. Time seemed to stand still. Ling Feng could clearly make out the wolf’s head, its blood‑red eyes, its gleaming white fangs, and even scraps of meat wedged between its teeth. Looks like I’m going to die again, Ling Feng thought. It passed right through him. The wolf went straight through Ling Feng’s form without the slightest resistance. Ling Feng stared in shock as the creature moved through his body. Am I dreaming? He tried to pinch himself, and the same strange thing happened — his hand passed straight through his own arm. I must be dreaming, Ling Feng concluded. “Boom…” A deafening crash echoed from behind. Ling Feng turned around and saw the wolf locked in battle with an unknown monster. The beast was enormous, like a small mountain. It bore a shell much like a tortoise’s, with short limbs — short only by its own standards. A human standing beside it would not even reach the height of its feet. Relying on its astonishing speed, the wolf dodged earth spikes bursting out from the ground. Seizing every opening, it whipped its tail, launching a crescent‑shaped s***h toward the monster. The monster moved sluggishly, yet its defense was overpowering. The crescent strike only produced a loud thud upon impact, inflicting barely any real harm. The two sides fought back and forth for some time. The wolf shifted its strategy, soaring high into the sky beyond the reach of the earth spikes. It hovered motionless in mid‑air. Thinking to himself, Ling Feng wondered: Is it plotting its next move? What an odd dream. Didn’t I get hit by a car?? Do people have bizarre dreams while unconscious? This is straight out of a xuan‑huan novel, flying wolves, giant monsters, even magic, wait a second… Magic?? Could the wolf be about to cast some powerful spell… The wolf hovering in the sky answered Ling Feng’s unspoken thought. “Ow‑wooo…” A transparent yet clearly visible “cannonball” shot out from the wolf’s maw. Travelling at supersonic speed, it slammed into the slow‑moving monster. “Boom!” Another tremendous explosion rang out, followed by the monster’s pained howls. Its shell had been pierced, leaving it gravely wounded. Ling Feng could already foresee its end — death. With such a critical flaw in its defenses, the wolf could easily deliver a finishing blow with its speed. Just as Ling Feng expected, the struggling monster was slain by the wolf’s crescent s***h. Only now did Ling Feng have time to observe his surroundings. He was inside a boundless forest that stretched as far as the eye could see. He glanced upward at the sky, and sure enough, there hung two “moons”. He had caught a glimpse of them earlier while watching the fight, but the battle had drawn all his attention before. Is this a dream? It cannot be, Ling Feng reasoned. A dream could never feel this vivid. He had no sense of touch, yet his sight and hearing worked perfectly. This was an entire genuine world. Then what exactly am I? A ghost? Ling Feng could not make sense of his current state. He should never have survived that car crash. After thinking it over, the only explanation was that he had become a ghost, and he was no longer on Earth. Perhaps this was where souls went after death. Where were the spirit messengers, the ox‑headed and horse‑faced guardians that were supposed to come for him? Ling Feng drifted aimlessly among the trees as the eastern sky began to pale with dawn. The eastern sky was turning pale?? If there was a sun, this ought not to be the afterlife. Then again, who said the world of the dead could have no sun? What if this was not the realm of the departed? Legends said ghosts would dissolve upon touching sunlight. He ought to find some shade; there was no need to take that risk. Ling Feng spotted a cave ahead and drifted toward it. The sun rose, bathing the whole land in light. Deep down, Ling Feng burned to test whether sunlight would harm him, yet he feared his soul would be scattered to nothing. He hesitated for a long while, torn between stepping into the sun and holding back. In the end, curiosity won out. Human curiosity truly knew no bounds, and people would even take risks for it. As Ling Feng stretched his hand out into the sunlight, a burning sensation shot through his spectral hand. He yanked it back at once. He breathed a silent sigh of relief: Thank goodness I only tested with my hand. Thank goodness I hurried into the cave when I saw the sun coming up. Otherwise I would have turned to ashes just like ghosts in the movies. Now Ling Feng could be certain of one thing — he really was a ghost. Still, he had no idea where he was or what kind of world this might be. The sun set and night fell. Ling Feng could move about once more. Drifting along with the wind, he kept turning over the questions from the daytime. He noticed he felt more energized under moonlight and groggy in daylight. Could moonlight be “food” for ghosts? The thought made him rise straight upward. He climbed to roughly ten thousand meters above ground. Instead of growing stronger, he grew increasingly weary. Could even ghosts not endure straying too far from the ground?? Ling Feng drifted back down. He saw that the forest where he had woken up was immense, probably covering a hundred thousand square kilometers. Its shape resembled one half of the Yin‑Yang fish pattern. Around the forest lay small human settlements, roads stretching toward distant lands, and several large cities visible along the horizon. Spotting signs of human life was the best thing that had happened to him all day. He drifted toward the nearest town. Halfway there, he caught sight of several people fighting a monster below. Ling Feng drew near and drifted down right in front of them. They kept battling the beast and paid him no mind at all. Plainly, they could not see him. This was no realm of the dead. As someone who had read plenty of novels back on Earth, Ling Feng realized he had been transmigrated to another world. This group seemed fairly capable. They quickly defeated the monster. He watched them strip off its hide and pull out its crystal‑like core. This must be the magic core he had read about in stories. Once they finished looting the corpse, the party headed deeper into the forest. Ling Feng followed them naturally. There were three men and two women in the group. All but one man were handsome and beautiful. One young woman robed in white was breathtakingly gorgeous. Among everyone Ling Feng had ever seen, only the woman he had died saving could compare. Back then he had not gotten a clear look, perhaps it was a hazy, dreamlike beauty, and his memory had idealized her perfectly. “Is Princess Xuerou really going to lure him deep into the forest?” another young woman whispered to the robed beauty. The princess frowned. “We have come this far. We must draw him to the heart of the forest. Otherwise all our hard work these days will be for nothing.” The other woman felt a twinge of mercy and pressed on. “Must we really do this? He will surely die once he goes in, and we are leaving him all alone.” The princess replied, “If we do not lead him into the Magic‑Beast Forest today, he will destroy us in the days ahead! The crimes he has committed over these years are enough to condemn him dozens of times over. If he were not the Second Young Master of the Long family, he would have been torn to pieces long ago. Xueqing, he harassed you too, did he not?” Xueqing hesitated. “That…” She was simple‑hearted. The princess was right. Since things had already reached this point, she would tell herself they were ridding the empire of a scourge. The princess had spent months plotting this scheme. She had allowed the man she had always rejected to grow close to her, gradually showing him kindness. Under the pretense of a school field expedition, she invited several friends to the Magic‑Beast Forest. That wicked man had no idea how terrifying this forest was, nor what dangers lurked in its inner depths. The only upside to his ignorance and idleness was that he was easy to fool. No one else dared to deceive him. She herself would never provoke the Long family if she had any other choice. Lately he had grown more and more shameless. If this kept going, I will… The princess dared not finish the thought and kept walking onward. She glanced at her two companions ahead: Lin Weir, son of Captain of the Royal Guards Lin Daoge, and Xin Lei, son of the Deputy Commander of the Royal Knights. She felt guilty for dragging them into this matter. In truth, both young men understood the possible consequences. Yet they could not bear to see their childhood friend humiliated by this brute. For her sake, they had thrown themselves into this without hesitation. Ling Feng drifted behind them. He had heard every word of their conversation, yet he could not understand its meaning at all. This tongue was nothing like any language on Earth, and back home he had only ever known Chinese. Still, he memorized the dialogue completely — not the sense of it, but every single syllable. If he ever learned this language later, he would know exactly what they had said. Ling Feng burned with curiosity, wondering what they were doing inside this dangerous forest after dark!
