Still, Mark felt his shirt, cold and clammy, sticking to his back. Fred had moved on, and Mark caught up quickly. "Haven't seen any doors that lead off, have you?" Fred whispered, risking more light. Mark, without a torch, couldn't see a bloody thing and had been following Fred blindly. Then the beam found some stone steps leading upwards. They climbed them stealthily and emerged through another similar wooden door into a darkened hallway. Fred had dimmed the flashlight's beam until it was just enough to see the floor by. They moved silently along a corridor to where a wooden staircase led upwards. Again a pause to listen. Fred then showed the way up, treading gingerly.
