Chapter Fourteen

202 Words
Marianne Holt returned with contracts. And numbers large enough to change Elena’s life. “You could walk away debt-free,” Marianne said smoothly. Elena stared at the paperwork. The offer was tempting. Terrifyingly tempting. Rowan stood silent beside the window. He didn’t interrupt. Didn’t pressure. Didn’t beg. That somehow hurt worse. After Marianne left, silence filled the inn. Finally Elena looked toward him. “You’re not going to say anything?” Rowan’s jaw tightened slightly. “It’s your decision.” “That’s not an answer.” He met her gaze evenly. “You already know what I want.” The quiet honesty in his voice made her chest ache. “And if I choose differently?” Pain flickered briefly across his face. “Then I’ll still want you happy.” Elena looked away quickly before he could see how deeply that affected her. Because no one had ever loved her gently before. And Rowan did. Even when it hurt him. Elena's heart pounded in her chest at the thought of seeing him in pain because of her own decision. She looks down thinking it through before she made her decision. Mind reeling from the decision and heart throbbing with a painful ache.
