ALARIC'S POV
I was wearing my red robe with just a short as I paced around my room, my hands linked behind my back as I walked. Different thoughts were going through my head, none of them good.
I called out for my guard, and he walked in. “ Anything?”
“No, Alpha.”
I groaned, rubbing my palm on my face. “ Where could they be? Why is it taking them so long?”
“Relax Alpha. I'm sure they are already on their way back. They should be here any moment from now.” He said, and I dismissed him.
I was going crazy because it had been hours since my men had left to search for Dali, but I hadn't received any news from them. They weren't back yet, and I couldn't sit still. I've tried mind-linking Jake to know if they've at least seen her, but he isn't responding, and I was getting super worried.
Maybe something had gone wrong with the operation. Maybe they'd used too much force on her?
To worsen it all, it felt like my soul had been ripped out of my body, my heart was being stepped on by numerous feet, and all that was left of my beating organ was crushed flesh. I was devasted and worried for Dani. I was thinking about her and hoping my men brought her back safely.
But I was confused. Why would I feel this way about her? Why does it feel like I've lost the only woman I love when I've never looked at her affectionately or cared for her as a man cares for his mate?
Ever since she's been with me, I've only ever maltreated her because she disgusts me. She never appealed to me, and seeing her face always made me boil in anger, but recently, when I stopped mistreating her, all I did was pretend to care for her because of her powers, which I would collect at the end of the day, not that I loved her. So why was I behaving this weirdly? Why does my chest hurt?
Unable to have peace of mind and my inability to think correctly, I decided to go and look for Dali myself. I walked to my wardrobe to pick out something more appropriate. I walked out of my room, my guard following my lead. I hoped I wasn't too late. As I neared the palace gate, I halted in my footsteps as I heard the chant of my men, signalling their arrival and for the first time since I heard the news of her disappearance, I breathed a sigh of relief.
I waited for them to enter and when they finally did, I searched for her amongst them, but she wasn't there. I raised a question brow at Jake, and his facial expressions, as well as that of the guards, told me that something was wrong.
The mission was unsuccessful. How is that possible?
I balled my fist and tried to rein in my anger when I asked Jake, “ How did this happen? Why isn't she here?”
“ We're sorry, Alpha. We tried locating her in the forest as she ran, but we were too late. Her scent had started to wane because she passed through the dense forest, but when we finally saw her and started chasing her, we lost her again and before we could catch her, a bright shining light engulfed where she stood, and by the time we got there, she'd disappeared. It seems that she'd used unnatural black magic to escape. The only proof she'd been there was her dress that a tree had torn and one leg of her shoe that had been left behind.”
I wasn't surprised when he mentioned the word magic; I already knew that she possessed magic, which was why I kept her with me. I paced and pinched the bridge of my eyes as I tried to get my anger under control. That little b***h!
Jake brought out the shoes she'd left behind, and I gripped it tightly “ f**k! f**k!! f**k!!!” I punched my fist through the wall and glared at them.
“ Are you all this incompetent? How could you allow a woman to outsmart you? A heavily pregnant one at that?”
“ We're sorry, Alpha, but she already had an hour's head start,” Jake said, trying to explain, but it only fueled my anger more.
“ That is not an excuse. You guys are the best of the best, and when I send you on a mission, no matter what it is, I expect good results, not this.”
The men bowed their heads, good! At least they had the decency to look guilty and feel ashamed. This wasn't what I expected.
I didn't expect her to use the party as an opening to escape. After all, she said she loved me, and I knew that would be enough to tie her down to me. No matter how badly I treated her in the past, she'd always give me that smile that I found so sickening, so what the hell made her bolt?
Why did she decide to run? It doesn't make sense. But when did anything ever make sense?
“ Oh, Dali, you've just made the biggest mistake of your life,” I growled as I thought of ways to punish her for running away. I'll make sure she shed tears of blood, and I'll use her in ways she'd never dare to imagine.
“ I told you that you belong to me. I'm the owner of your life, and you dare to do this?”
Nothing in this world would get between me and her, and she's mine from the minute she was born till the day she'll take her last breath.
I punched the wall one last time and swore I'd never stop until I found her.
“ I won't rest till she's mine once again. And if anyone tries to get in my way, I'll end them all.”
