Episode 5: A Reason She Stayed

438 Words
I couldn’t stop thinking about her. The way she walked. The way she smiled. The way she carried herself… calm, confident, yet unlike anyone I had ever met. The next morning, I heard something that made my heart skip. “She’s staying with her auntie, Mummy Aiba,” someone whispered. I froze. Her parents weren’t here? She came… just to stay with her auntie? Curiosity mixed with something stronger… a pull I couldn’t explain. I walked around, pretending I had business, but my eyes searched for her. And then I saw her, outside her auntie’s house. She was standing with another woman I didn’t recognize at first. It was Ocheniya, her eldest stepsister. Ocheniya was selling orange fruits, and villagers had gathered around, picking through the baskets. The air smelled faintly of ripe oranges and fresh earth. Children ran past carrying yams, while a goat bleated near the fence. Patience watched quietly, smiling as Ocheniya greeted the customers. Her eyes glimmered with nervous excitement. She had spoken to Ocheniya often on the phone, but meeting her in person was different. Her heart raced, and for a moment, she felt vulnerable in a way she hadn’t expected. I watched silently from a distance. Every laugh, every gesture she made… it was like destiny had painted her into my life perfectly. And yet, a strange fear crept in. What if I’m not enough? I took a deep breath and stepped closer. “Good morning,” I said, trying to sound casual. She turned. Her eyes widened slightly—just enough for me to see her surprise. “Good morning,” she replied softly. Her voice… still hit me harder than I expected. I paused, then asked carefully, “Why here… if your parents aren’t around?” Her gaze shifted thoughtfully. “I… wanted to spend Christmas somewhere different,” she said finally. “Somewhere peaceful. Somewhere I could think.” I nodded slowly, trying to read between the lines. “Alone?” I asked. She smiled faintly. “Not completely. My auntie is here. And I just met my stepsister Ocheniya for the first time.” Her words made my chest tighten. She had chosen this place. This village. And for some reason… she was here, meeting family, with me nearby. Then, her gaze flicked briefly in my direction. I felt a spark I couldn’t name. Something was growing between us. Something neither of us could explain yet. I clenched my fists, determination rising. I was going to know her better. I was going to understand why she came here. And I wasn’t going to let this chance slip away.
