Episode 14: Between Survival and Responsibility

372 Words
Life didn’t slow down. If anything… it became heavier. Every morning, I woke up with one question in my mind: What next? The security job was helping me survive. But it wasn’t the life I dreamed of. Not the future I had imagined for myself… Or for Patience. My small room felt tighter each day. No ceiling. Goats roaming freely in the compound. Dust everywhere. This wasn’t the kind of place you bring the woman you love. I sat on my bed one evening, staring at the wall. “Is this how I will start my life?” I asked myself quietly. My phone buzzed. Patience. “Hello,” I said. “Tony, when are you coming to see me?” she asked gently. I paused. Not because I didn’t want to see her… But because I didn’t know what to say. “Soon,” I replied. But even I knew… “Soon” had no date. There was a brief silence. Then she said softly, “My parents have been asking questions.” My heart skipped. Questions. The kind of questions a man must be ready to answer. “What did you tell them?” I asked. “I told them the truth… that you’re trying. That you’re working hard.” I closed my eyes. Trying. Working hard. Was that enough? “I don’t want to disappoint you,” I said quietly. “You won’t,” she replied immediately. “I didn’t choose you because you have everything… I chose you because of who you are.” Her words calmed me… but they also reminded me of something deeper. Responsibility. Love was no longer just feelings. It was becoming a commitment. A future. A life to build. That night, I couldn’t sleep. I kept thinking. Planning. Worrying. “This can’t be my final level,” I whispered to myself. I needed more. A better job. A better life. A better future. Not just for me… But for her. The next morning, I made a decision. I would not settle. No matter how hard it got… I would keep pushing. Keep searching. Keep fighting. Because somewhere ahead… There had to be a breakthrough. And when it finally came… I would be ready.
