Prologue - The Prophecy

1617 Words
Many years ago…   Elrohith grabs the book before it hits the ground. The library is dead silent, and he doesn’t want anyone to find out he is in the dark magic section. How are you supposed to learn how to defend yourself against dark magic if you aren’t taught about how it works or how to fight it?    He spends his days in the academy feeling like an outcast. Even at home, he sticks to himself as much as possible. His family and their constant light creations give him a headache. Nobody can be that perfect all the time. Surely the universe has to have some kind of balance. It can't all be just black or white!   Joining them for dinner is the only time that he is forced to actually share time with them. Breathe the same air as them!   “There was a new prophecy delivered to my office today.” His father excitedly tells them all.   “It tells of a high priestess, a twin with a broken bond.”   His sisters, of course, immediately fall in love with the idea that it will become a romantic story, and he rolls his eyes. Haven’t they learned! There has to be balanced. It can’t all be light, happiness, and damn rainbows all the time!   “Does she fall in love?”   “Not in this prophecy, my sweet.” He drops a kiss on their mom’s cheek.   “No, it’s said that she will be the most powerful priestess to ever walk in our realms.”   “A twin with a broken bond? Doesn’t that mean that she was rejected by her mate?” Elrohith looks at his dad, and he just shrugs.   “The council is looking into it, but you know how things go with prophecies, son. They are riddles and sometimes hard to explain. A twin with a broken bond can also be a twin that no longer shares a bond with his or her brother or sister.”   Then he meets her. She is sitting on the floor of the library, with her back against the shelf, reading a book in the dark magic section. First, he doesn’t know what to say to her, then she starts the conversation by explaining that she isn’t there for the reasons he thinks. She finds it to be the only place in the library where she can find peace. They get to talking and the girl who shares his beliefs and makes him feel like he is no longer so alone becomes his girlfriend. She is not his destined mate, but in all honesty, what are the chances that there is destined love out there for him? They spend every waking moment together talking about the balance in life.   ***   “You are a useless, a mediocre wannabe! You will never be good enough for me!” She shouts walking down the passage.   They have been dating for three years, but now she is accusing him of using dark magic and that he is no longer good enough for her. He can’t understand what caused the sudden change in her. She turns around, sending a spell in his direction that tosses him across the passage making him slide and hit his head against the door.   “Don’t ever talk to me again!” She screams and walks away.   She accused him of such atrocities, and he never once treated her with anything other than respect! He gets up from the floor and glares at her retreating figure. How could she? She knows how he feels about violence, and she used to agree with him. In his anger, he lifts his hand and speaks the words that come to mind. The words from the dark grimoire that he is hiding under his floor in his room.   Blue smoke comes from his hands, and he watches it lift her off the floor, making her scream and into the air, right before it snaps her neck.   “Oh, my goddess!!” Someone screams from somewhere, and it brings him back to the present.   “What have I done?” He whispers and tears form in his eyes before he turns to run.   He tried to get out of the city, but he wasn’t trained as a warrior, and they caught him before he could even reach his house. He is dragged before the council, who banishes him from the magical kingdom. His entire family turns their backs on him. The entire wizarding world turns their backs on him without anyone giving him a chance to defend himself or explain why he did what he did.   Elrohith barges into his parents’ house and grabs the book from underneath his floor, packing what belongings he has before he is escorted out of the kingdom. His parents didn’t even object or try to defend him!   Vowing that he will find a way to prove his worth one day. He will show them how wrong they are! He will show them that magic needs both good and evil, dark and light! He will make sure that they pay for banishing him.   Years later in another part of the supernatural world.   The excitement in the bus is electric, and Tabatha fights to keep the butterflies in her stomach calm. Everyone is talking about what they think they can expect and what the castle might look like. Excited at the thought that they might find their destined mates and their lives will be perfect. Tabatha is looking forward to the events they mention that are planned, but she is also nervous. Romantic picnics and moonlight walk…   There are so many possibilities.   “I hear they’ve invited everyone from every kingdom.” She hears one of the kids say smiling from ear to ear.   When they arrive at the airport, it’s total pandemonium while they wait for their luggage to be loaded onto the plane, and they are given their seat assignments. Tabatha is grateful that they didn’t have to drive there in the uncomfortable busses, and she sits back into her seat taking a deep breath. She has never been on an airplane before and tries to listen to the instructions of the hostess, but everyone is so excited that they talk too loudly, and she can’t hear a thing.   “Are you excited, honey?” Their mom comes to check on her and her group of friends before take-off, and she nervously nods.   The plane ride there is pretty uneventful, and the plane is strangely comfortable. She wasn’t expecting that… Within the hour they reach the airport, and she looks out the window at the line of cars that are waiting for them when they taxi down the runway.   She has never seen anything like it. Her parents have their official cars, but all these have royal emblems on them.   The castle looks majestic from where they drive in through the huge steel gates, up to the beautiful gardens on the outside. When they walk into the castle, she is mesmerized by the huge crystal chandelier hanging in the front foyer. It is old, but you can still see the remnants of what once must have been absolutely beautiful.   She and her friends huddle together and softly talk about the different species that are there, and the excitement of the week to come is almost overwhelming. She smells a whiff of spearmint and feels her heart racing. She quickly looked around her, she saw fairies excitedly talking together in a little group. Regal vampires are mostly keeping to themselves, and her mind drifts back to the conversation in front of her, while the scent is forgotten.   Seeing some of their friends from their annual festival, she joins her friends in squealing in happiness that they will all be going through this exciting time together.   ***   Walking up to Christiaan, Erik prepares for his best friend to complain about being here. On the one hand, he didn’t want to be here either, but on the other… To be near so many unmated females. You would be an i***t to resist it!   He grabs each of them a drink and finds Christiaan hiding behind a pillar. The moment the speeches start, Christiaan moves out from behind the pillar, and they watch the royals greeting everyone.   Erik notices the change in his friend’s demeanour and starts teasing him. He looks around the room, and there are so many singles that it’s hard to even figure out how many species there are at the event. Lykos jumps up and down inside his mind like an i***t, and he blocks him before Lykos makes him crazy.   This is going to be an amazing week!   ***   Elrohith steps into the great foyer where everyone is gathered. His spies intercepted the invitation the moment they heard about the event. He knew that if he is ever to find her, she will be here.   They killed the entire group of white magicians and took on their identities so they could come to the event without anyone suspecting a thing. It doesn’t bother him in the least to have taken the lives of some of the people who turned their backs on him. He carefully scans the crowd, studying each face to try and see if he can find her. He thought that he would be able to walk in, and he would know who she was! She has to be special and would probably stand out from the others, surely.   “We need to find out who in the wizarding world are twins.” He instructs his guards, and they slowly start moving through the crowd, knowing what to do.
