11. The Crown Beneath the Lake

1882 Words
The chamber remained silent long after Lucien disappeared. Not peaceful silence. The kind that came after disaster. The underground lake still stood divided in impossible silver walls, revealing the ancient staircase beneath Bloodridge mountain. Moonlight poured through the cavern in pale streams, reflecting against black stone and trembling water. The path waited. Aria could feel it. Like a heartbeat beneath the earth. Calling her. Darius still held her hand. His grip was warm, grounding, real against the cold magic filling the chamber. Blood soaked through the bandage wrapped around his shoulder again, staining the black fabric of his shirt. He was hurt. Again. Because of her. The guilt twisted sharply inside her chest. Kael leaned heavily against one of the stone pillars nearby, breathing hard. Blood from the silver-forged blade still ran slowly down his side. Even wounded, he looked dangerous—silver hair damp with sweat, blue eyes sharp beneath pain and exhaustion. But tonight he looked less like an Alpha. And more like a man watching everything he once understood collapse around him. Selene floated silently above the lake. Ancient. Beautiful. Terrifying. Aria finally found her voice. “What exactly is the Crown of Night?” Selene’s silver eyes shifted toward her slowly. “A weapon.” Darius’s jaw tightened instantly. Selene noticed. “And a throne,” she continued softly. “And a prison.” “That clears up absolutely nothing,” Mara muttered from the stairs. Aria had almost forgotten she was there. Mara descended carefully into the chamber, several Bloodridge warriors following behind her carrying torches and weapons. The moment they saw the divided lake, every single one stopped. One warrior whispered a prayer. Another immediately lowered his gaze when he looked at Aria. Fear again. Aria hated it. Mara, however, looked directly at her. Not afraid. Concerned. That somehow felt worse. Mara’s eyes moved toward Darius’s bleeding shoulder. “You need a healer.” “I need answers first.” “You’re bleeding through the floor.” “I’ve done worse.” “That is not comforting.” Darius ignored her. His attention remained fixed on the staircase beneath the lake. “The Order wanted the gate opened,” he said quietly. “Why?” Selene’s expression darkened. “Because the seal weakens during the full moon.” Aria’s stomach tightened. “How long until the full moon?” Kael answered. “Five nights.” Everyone looked at him. Kael straightened despite the pain crossing his face. “The moon reaches its peak in five nights.” Five days. Five days before the Order returned. Five days before something ancient beneath Bloodridge awakened completely. Aria looked toward the staircase again. The darkness below seemed endless. “What happens if they get the crown?” Selene’s gaze became distant. “Long ago, the Moon Queen ruled not through force, but through bond. The crown amplified that power.” Aria frowned. “What kind of power?” Selene looked directly at her. “The power to command wolves.” Silence fell heavily across the chamber. Even Mara went still. Kael’s face lost color. Darius’s expression became dangerous. Aria stared at Selene in disbelief. “You mean… control?” Selene’s hesitation answered before her words did. “Not originally.” That was not reassuring. “The first Moon Queen united the territories willingly,” Selene continued quietly. “But power changes when fear touches it. Over time, rulers stopped asking wolves to follow.” Her silver eyes darkened painfully. “They began forcing them.” Cold spread through Aria’s body. “The crown corrupted them.” “Yes.” Darius finally released Aria’s hand. Immediately she missed the warmth. The realization annoyed her. Darius stepped closer to the edge of the divided lake, staring down into the exposed staircase beneath the water. “Then we destroy it.” Selene looked at him sadly. “You cannot.” “Everything can be destroyed.” “Not this.” The certainty in her voice unsettled everyone. Selene floated lower above the water. “The crown was forged with blood, soul, and lunar magic older than the packs themselves. It cannot be broken by strength.” Darius crossed his arms. “Then how is it stopped?” Selene looked at Aria. The answer hit before she spoke. “No,” Aria whispered. Selene’s silence confirmed it. Mara swore softly. Kael stepped away from the pillar immediately. “Absolutely not.” Aria looked sharply at him. “You don’t get to decide that.” Kael ignored her. “She’s not going down there.” Darius’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “You don’t command anyone here.” “At least I’m trying to keep her alive.” The tension exploded instantly. Darius took one step toward him. “You think I’m not?” Kael stepped forward despite his injuries. “I think you’re too blinded by her to think clearly.” Aria’s pulse jumped. Darius’s expression turned lethal. “And you think rejecting her suddenly makes you wise?” Kael flinched. Good. But pain followed immediately after the satisfaction. Because despite everything— Part of her still cared when Kael hurt. That truth disgusted her. Kael looked at Aria then. Really looked at her. Not the Moon-touched. Not the key. Her. “I was trying to protect you,” he said quietly. Aria laughed bitterly. “There it is again.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “You don’t understand what Silvermoon would’ve done if they knew.” “Then you should have trusted me enough to let me choose!” The chamber shook suddenly. Everyone froze. Silver light burst across the floor beneath Aria’s feet again. The symbols glowed violently. Her emotions. The power answered her emotions. Selene moved quickly. “Control it.” “I’m trying!” “No,” Selene said sharply. “You’re suppressing it. That is different.” The silver light intensified. Aria’s breathing became uneven. Whispers filled the chamber again. Open. Heir. Queen. Darius immediately moved to her side. “Aria.” She grabbed his arm hard. The moment she touched him, the power steadied slightly. Not gone. Steadier. Both of them noticed. So did Kael. Pain crossed Kael’s face before he hid it. Selene watched carefully. “The bond strengthens faster than expected.” Aria released Darius immediately. Heat rushed to her face. “This is not helping.” Mara looked deeply unimpressed. “Personally, I think life-threatening magical tension is helping no one.” Even Darius almost smiled at that. Almost. Then a low sound echoed from beneath the staircase. Everyone turned instantly. The noise came again. A growl. Deep. Ancient. Not human. Not wolf. The warriors near the stairs visibly paled. One stepped backward. Another tightened his grip on his spear hard enough for his knuckles to whiten. Aria stared down into the darkness beneath the lake. Something moved. Huge. Slow. Watching. Selene closed her eyes briefly. “It woke sooner than I feared.” Darius’s voice dropped dangerously. “What is down there?” Selene opened her eyes. “The guardian.” That was somehow worse. Kael ran a hand across his face. “You people say things like ‘guardian’ and expect everyone not to panic.” “You are panicking quite loudly,” Mara observed. Kael glared at her. Mara looked delighted about it. Aria barely noticed either of them. The pull toward the staircase had become stronger. Like invisible threads wrapping around her ribs and slowly dragging her forward. She took one unconscious step toward the lake. Darius caught her wrist instantly. The contact sent warmth rushing through her again. “Don’t.” Aria swallowed hard. “It’s calling me.” No one spoke. Because they all believed her. Darius’s grip tightened slightly. “You’re not going alone.” Selene looked sharply at him. “You cannot go where the bloodline path begins.” Darius met her gaze coldly. “Watch me.” For the first time, Selene actually looked surprised. Mara muttered something under her breath that sounded suspiciously like stubborn i***t. Kael pushed away from the pillar despite the blood loss. “Then I’m going too.” Darius turned slowly. “No.” Kael’s eyes flashed. “You don’t trust me.” “No.” “Fair.” That answer startled everyone. Even Darius. Kael exhaled tiredly. “But the Order already infiltrated Silvermoon. If Lucien reaches the crown first, every pack falls. Including mine.” Darius studied him carefully. “You expect me to believe this is about protecting your territory?” Kael’s voice lowered. “No.” Silence settled. Kael looked toward Aria. “It’s about protecting her.” The honesty in his voice hurt more than lies ever had. Aria looked away first. Darius noticed. Of course he noticed. His expression darkened slightly, though whether from jealousy or frustration she could not tell. Possibly both. Selene interrupted before the tension could worsen further. “The path below is not merely physical.” Everyone looked at her. “What does that mean?” Aria asked. Selene floated lower above the black water. “The crown protects itself. The deeper levels were designed to judge intention, fear, memory, and desire.” Mara blinked. “So the mountain is haunted and emotionally manipulative.” “Yes.” “Wonderful.” One of the younger warriors suddenly rushed down the stairs breathlessly. “Alpha!” Darius turned immediately. “What happened?” “The northern watchtower sent word.” The warrior swallowed hard. “Three more packs arrived outside Bloodridge.” Kael cursed softly. Darius’s expression became ice. “What packs?” “Gray Hollow. Ironfang.” The warrior hesitated. “And Silvermoon.” The chamber erupted. Kael stepped forward instantly. “My father came here?” The warrior nodded nervously. “He’s demanding entry.” Aria’s blood went cold. Alpha Ronan. Kael’s father. The man who had watched her grow up. The man who allowed her rejection. The man who apparently knew far more than he ever admitted. Darius looked toward Mara. “How many warriors?” “Too many.” Mara crossed her arms tightly. “This is no longer diplomacy.” No. It wasn’t. This was a siege forming in real time. The news spread through the chamber like poison. Three powerful packs gathering outside Bloodridge fortress. The Order somewhere in the mountains. The full moon approaching. And beneath them— A crown waiting in darkness. Aria suddenly understood something horrifying. Everyone wanted the same thing. Not the crown. Her. The realization nearly stole her breath. Selene looked at her sadly. “You see it now.” Aria’s voice came out hollow. “I’m the center of the war.” “No,” Darius said immediately. Everyone looked at him. His gaze remained fixed on Aria. “You’re the reason we might survive it.” The words hit harder than they should have. Because he believed them. Aria stared at him. This terrifying Alpha who had every reason to use her. Yet kept choosing her instead. Kael noticed the look between them. Pain flashed across his face again. Then guilt swallowed it whole. The growl beneath the staircase echoed louder this time. Closer. The underground lake rippled violently. And somewhere beyond the mountain walls— War drums began to sound.
