ALL MEN ARE NOT THE SAME Chapter 1: The Faces We Remember Three years had passed since Amara finally understood the meaning behind the words she had once been afraid to believe: All men are not the same. She had learned the lesson the hardest way possible. There had been a time when she believed love was nothing more than a beautiful word people used before breaking one another's hearts. Her first relationship had taught her how deeply a woman could love and how painfully that love could be betrayed. Then came another man. At first, she had been afraid to trust him. She had compared every action he took with the painful memories of the past. If he was quiet, she assumed he was hiding something. If he came home late, she imagined betrayal. If he disagreed with her, she thought another heartbreak was coming. But he had been patient. He never forced her to trust him. He simply showed her, day after day, that love did not always have to come with fear. Now Amara sat beside the window of her small office, staring at the city below. She had built a life for herself. She was no longer the frightened young woman who cried herself to sleep because the man she loved had chosen someone else. She was stronger. She had also learned something else. Sometimes, healing did not mean forgetting what happened. Sometimes, healing meant remembering without allowing the past to control your future. A knock sounded on the door. "Come in." The door opened. Amara looked up—and froze. The person standing there was someone she had never expected to see again. "Amara." Her heart immediately began beating faster. She slowly stood. "Daniel?" Daniel gave her a nervous smile. It had been years since she had seen him. He was the man from her past—the man whose betrayal had once made her believe that every man was capable of the same cruelty. "What are you doing here?" she asked. Daniel lowered his eyes. "I came because I need to talk to you." "I don't think we have anything to talk about." "I understand why you feel that way." "No, Daniel. You don't." Silence filled the room. Daniel took a slow breath. "I know I hurt you." Amara laughed bitterly. "Hurt me? You destroyed the person I used to be." "I know." "No, you don't." He looked at her. "I do." For a moment, neither spoke. Then Daniel said something she never expected. "I came to apologize." Amara folded her arms. "After all these years?" "I know it's late." "It is." "I don't expect you to forgive me." "Good." Daniel nodded. "I deserved that." Amara turned toward the window. She thought she would feel anger. Instead, she felt tired. The anger that had once consumed her was no longer there. That surprised her. Perhaps that was another sign that she had truly healed. "You should leave," she said quietly. Daniel stood. Before walking out, he stopped at the door. "Amara?" She didn't turn around. "Thank you for becoming the woman you are today." She finally looked at him. "You had nothing to do with that." Daniel smiled sadly. "I know." Then he walked away. Amara remained standing by the window. She thought about the man she had become. Then she thought about the man who had taught her that love could be different. Her husband. Her best friend. Her safe place. Michael. A smile slowly appeared on her face. Her phone rang. It was Michael. She answered. "Hello?" "Where are you?" "At the office." "I've been waiting for you." "I'll be home soon." There was a pause. Then Michael laughed. "Please don't tell me you're working again." Amara smiled. "I have responsibilities." "And I have a wife who works too much." "I'll make it up to you." "You always say that." "Because it always works." Michael laughed. "I love you." Amara closed her eyes. Those three words still had the power to touch her heart. "I love you too." After ending the call, she gathered her things. But before leaving, she noticed a message waiting on her phone. It was from an unfamiliar number. We need to talk about what happened three years ago. You don't know the whole truth. Amara stared at the message. Her smile disappeared. Three years ago? What truth could still be hidden after all this time? She read the message again. Then another message arrived. Ask Michael about Sarah. Amara's heart stopped. Sarah. She knew that name. Sarah had been one of the people connected to her past. One of the people she had believed she had left behind. She slowly sat back down. For the first time in years, the peace she had built around herself began to crack. Maybe the past had not finished with her. Maybe there were still secrets waiting to be uncovered. And maybe the lesson she thought she had already learned—that all men were not the same—was about to be tested again. Amara looked at the phone in her hand. Then she whispered, "What don't I know?" Outside, the city continued moving as though nothing had happened. But inside Amara's heart, everything had changed. The past had returned. And this time, it was carrying a secret powerful enough to threaten the future she had fought so hard to build.ALL MEN ARE NOT THE SAME Chapter 2: The Name She Feared Amara remained seated for several minutes, staring at the message. Ask Michael about Sarah. Three words had managed to turn a peaceful afternoon into a storm inside her mind. She wanted to dismiss it. She wanted to believe it was a mistake. But deep down, she knew the name Sarah too well. Sarah had once been part of the complicated chapter of her life that she had tried so hard to close. Amara picked up her phone and called the unknown number. It rang once. Twice. Three times. Then the call ended. She called again. This time, the number was switched off. "Who are you?" she whispered. She stood and walked around the office. Her thoughts became louder. Maybe it was Daniel. Maybe someone wanted to destroy her marriage. Maybe someone was jealous of Michael. Or perhaps there really was something she didn't know. She hated herself for even thinking about it. Michael had never given her a reason to doubt him. Not once. He had stood beside her when she was broken. He had listened to stories about her painful past without judging her. When she cried, he held her. When she was afraid, he reassured her. When she pushed him away because of memories that had nothing to do with him, he waited patiently. He had earned her trust. So why was a strange message suddenly making her question everything? Amara picked up her handbag. She needed to go home. She needed to look into Michael's eyes. Perhaps then she would know whether the message meant anything. --- Michael was in the living room when she arrived. He was sitting on the sofa with his laptop open. The moment he saw her, he smiled. "You're finally home." Amara forced a smile. "Yes." Michael closed the laptop. "You look worried." "I'm fine." He studied her face. "You don't look fine." Amara placed her handbag on the table. "Can I ask you something?" "Of course." She hesitated. "Do you know someone named Sarah?" Michael's expression changed. Only for a second. But Amara noticed. Her heart sank. Michael slowly leaned back. "Why are you asking?" "Just answer me." "Amara..." "Do you know her?" He looked away. "Yes." The room suddenly felt colder. Amara swallowed. "How do you know her?" Michael remained silent. "Michael." "I knew Sarah before I met you." Amara stared at him. "How well?" "Not the way you're thinking." "Then explain it." Michael stood. "There are things I wanted to tell you." "Why didn't you?" "Because I didn't want to reopen wounds that had already healed." Amara's eyes filled with tears. "You don't get to decide what I can handle." "I know." "Then tell me." Michael walked toward her. She stepped back. "What happened between you and Sarah?" "Nothing romantic." "Then why did someone tell me to ask you about her?" Michael's face tightened. "Someone contacted you?" "Yes." "What did they say?" "They said I don't know the whole truth." Michael became silent. Amara's heart began pounding. "Tell me the truth." "I will." "Now." Michael nodded. "Sarah was involved in what happened to you three years ago." Amara stared at him. "What do you mean?" "She knew Daniel." "I already knew that." "She knew more than you thought." "What did she know?" Michael took a deep breath. "Daniel didn't betray you alone." Amara felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath her. "What?" "There were other people involved." She shook her head. "No." "I found out later." "And you kept this from me?" "I was trying to protect you." "You lied to me." "I didn't lie." "You hid the truth!" Michael had no answer. Tears rolled down Amara's cheeks. "All these years, I thought I understood what happened." "You understood enough to move forward." "No." Her voice broke. "You don't understand. I spent years blaming myself. I thought I wasn't good enough. I thought I wasn't beautiful enough. I thought maybe I wasn't the kind of woman a man could love forever." Michael stepped closer. "But none of that was your fault." "I know that now." She wiped her tears. "But why didn't you tell me?" "Because I was afraid." "Afraid of what?" "Afraid that if you knew everything, you'd go looking for answers and destroy the peace you had built." Amara laughed through her tears. "And now?" "Now someone else has brought the past back." Silence filled the room. Then Amara asked the question she was most afraid to ask. "Is Sarah still alive?" Michael looked at her. "Yes." Amara's breath caught. "Where is she?" "I don't know." "Michael." "I genuinely don't know." Before Amara could respond, her phone rang. The same unknown number. She and Michael looked at each other. Amara answered. "Hello?" A woman's voice came through. "Amara?" "Who is this?" "You don't know me." "Then why are you calling me?" "Because you deserve to know what really happened." Amara stood still. "Are you Sarah?" There was silence. Then the woman whispered, "Yes." Amara's eyes widened. "Where are you?" "I can't tell you." "Why?" "Because someone is watching me." Michael immediately moved closer. Amara put the call on speaker. "Who is watching you?" Michael asked. The woman became silent. Then she said, "Michael knows." Amara turned toward her husband. Michael's face had gone pale. "Sarah," he said, "tell her the truth." "I can't." "You have to." A sound came from Sarah's end of the phone. It sounded like a door opening. Sarah suddenly whispered, "He's here." "Who?" Amara asked. Sarah's breathing became faster. "Amara, listen to me carefully." "I'm listening." "Daniel wasn't the man who planned everything." Amara froze. "What are you saying?" Sarah continued, "The person who destroyed your life wasn't Daniel." "Then who was it?" Before Sarah could answer, the call ended. Amara stared at the phone. Michael closed his eyes. She turned toward him. "You knew." "I suspected." "Who?" Michael didn't answer. "Michael, who?" He looked at her with tears in his eyes. "The person behind everything is someone you already know." Amara's heart began racing. "Who?" Michael whispered a name. And when Amara heard it, her entire world seemed to stop. It was someone she had trusted. Someone she had never suspected. Someone who had been standing beside her all along.
